R25: Glory vs Mariners

From the official site. Well said Hutch.

"It’s devastating. Disappointing doesn’t sum it up," said Mariners midfielder John Hutchinson.

"We worked so hard through the season and pre-season and now we reflect on it and know we’ve got two or three months of training but two games left and the season’s over for us, so we have to keep going to training and look forward to next season.

"It’s tough but I don’t think we deserve to be there (in the finals) after the last ten weeks and the players have to stand up and take responsibility for what has happened in the last ten weeks.

"We started off so well and I think at one stage we were second or third on the ladder, and now to be fighting it out for the wooden spoon is horrible really.

"The squad of 20 or 21 players need to raise our hands and say it was our fault," said Hutchinson.

Explains (not excuses before you all jump on me) his actions post game NYE. For the "Who are ya" chant to be directed at him was a disgrace the guy bleeds yellow and blue and shows more guts and passion than a few I could mention.

I said before the match I would rather lose this one and have the Glory end our season than win, get our hopes up then have the Scum do it instead. Considering form over the past 2 months, a loss was on the cards. The Shed were in full voice for much of the game, but (to re-direct a quote made about Craven College), getting beaten by the Glory at ME Stadium is like being mugged in an art gallery. The Perth fans were (obviously) very happy to win, but there was never a hint walking out that it was going to get ugly between us and them. They know very well what its' like to struggle. That evening at the pub I told Dave Mitchell (not name-dropping, he and Lawrie were there having a drink) that Perth have really turned themselves around in the past 18 months and I hoped they did well in the finals, especially if they played GCU or the Scum in which case I hoped the Glory boys would give them a fisting.

Some interesting stats:

Effective tackles: Perth 94% (highest for all teams in the round), Mariners 87% (second highest in the round)

Completed passes: Perth 158, Mariners 301 (third highest in round)

Passing accuracy: Perth 72%, Mariners 81% (third highest in round)

Shows how some individual errors really cost us in this game and not overall team play, and that we were up against a tackling machine in Perth as I have never seen an effective tackle count so high.

Also some interesting stats for the whole season for the Mariners:

Most completed passes per game: John Hutchinson 33.4 (fourth highest in the league), Pedj Bojic 24.2. Michael McGlinchey 23.5

Stats don't tell the whole story, 74% of people can tell you that :)
Quality over quantity is what we want

Hutch (or whoever plays that position) is always going to have a bunch of completed passes.

What the Hutch lovers and haters have to realise is that his role is largely tempo - bouncing the ball here and there and keeping it moving. It's not about killer balls, it's not about always moving the ball on the attack, it's about constantly being able to receive the ball and move it on to maintain possession.

There's a reason why many of his passes aren't forwards. The best option to keep the ball is often to move it sideways or backwards to control possession and find a different point of attack. It annoys the shit out of me to hear all around me at the game 'pass it forwards FFS' when what he's doing is ensuring we don't just hand over the ball to then have the opposition attacking us with numbers.

There's a reason why his passes are different in nature to Travis, Weemac and the rest of the forum faves too - he plays a different position! That said, there are often times when their best option is to knock it back to build again rather than run into a brick wall and lose it.

It's not glamorous, it's often boring, but it's better than surrendering possession and gifting goals to our opposition.

I understand that knocking it back is a good option sometimes, but it seems like there are plenty of times that players (not always Hutch) knock the ball back to the defence when they have no pressure on them. Whether thats the players fault, or other people not telling them they have time, I have no idea. The point is, we don't seem to use the space other teams give us, and quite frankly, they don't give us much.

the difference in movement in the attacking third between us and other HAL sides is staggering. this isn't the fault of the poor buggers in DM or fullback roles, and likewise it's not their fault if the best and safest option they've got is either to lay it back or sideways or if that's not possible, lump it long.

there's not a player in our side who can't pass (with occasional question marks over pedj, kwas and nicky when they've got their heads in the wrong place). there are plenty who can't seem to find space if you put them in a taxi and f**king drove them there.

Spot on dibo.  It's not just movement up front it is all over the park.  Most of the time one player moves for the ball and quite often this is a guy droping back and facing his own goal.  This means most of the time the only option he has is to go back or sideways.

If you watch the defence and midfiled they play the ball and stand still.
It amazes me how often we turn a good chance to attach into defence as we cannot break out at speed and end up with an isolated player recieving the ball with his back to goal.

This is the sort of poor football that is impacting the fans, if we were at least entertaining in loss it would be something.  This has to rest at the feet of the coach though as you can get 8 year olds to pass and move.

Those stats don't suprise me. I've only been following football since V2 and so am fairly new to the game but I reckon Hutch has been our best this year by a country mile. The one thing I have learnt from playing and watching the last few years is that you can't score if you don't have possession and it is the one part of the game he excels at. I also don't think he has passed backwards as much as many people make out - not that I believe that is bad thing. He often gathers the ball in the middle of the park and finds the wide man in space with an easy pass and just keeps the play ticking over in a low risk fashion.

While I'm into my Hutch love in I have to add he would be an ideal Captain for us next year. He has leadership qualities and opposition fans hate him. I wouldn't put him anywhere near the Muscat, Pantaledis, Tiatto or Griffiths category but he does have a little bit of mongrel in him and I reckon Wilkinson is just too nice a guy. Also the comparison in their post match interviews says a lot about their different mindsets.

The other thing needed is for our forwards to get in the opposition defenders' faces. I noticed the (few) times we did that the other night, we forced them into error.
Their first goal came about because McBreen put pressure on Doig, and Doig made a mistake. In the first home match against Fury, Matty put their defence under pressure and we had a 15-second goal. Trav put Moore under the pump in the last match against Brisbane, and got the softest goal of his life.
The other "football" codes make a real big deal out of stopping the opposition getting the ball out of the red zone, basketball has the "full court press" and I really think it's something the Mariners should be doing. If the forwards aren't fit enough to keep it up for the full 90, then they should get fit enough.
It really pisses me off watching opposition defences walking the ball back to halfway before a mariner comes in to start harassing. It's too bloody late then.

To me, this is Hutch's biggest problem, more so than his poor passing judgement. He has no movement off the ball at all.

Our off the ball movement has been our greatest downfall apart from finishing imo.

Re Hutch,  you do seem to have a bit of a bee in your bonnet about Hutch though Grunta - as per you last avatar - pleased to see a new one.

I think his movement is ok generally in terms of his role - as he often sits back, or tucks in as per when he's DM. But I think when he plays wide however, he still just generally tucks in or maybe plays a few slow overlaps, but does not press wide or deep with pace every often at all, this could be because of his average pace, not sure.

But... I do also know that he clocks one of the highest milages out of our players. So his movement is obviously there, but perhaps could be more effective.

Heff and Kwassie imo were the players this year who showed the best movement off the ball. Though Weemac prior the hidden injury situation, showed the best potential in this regard.

On the ball, Travis, and then only recently Nik have had the best movement on the ball imo - though Pedj does well in this area too, just lacks the composure with the lay off  too often.

Back when I was a wet behind the ears 20 year old looking to play in higher grades with uni, I fancied myself as a central midfielder and started doing very well there. I was always a decent runner and was fit and quick enough, but I had a tendency to always try the miracle ball and try to be everywhere at once.

My coach told me that instead of trying to be everywhere and make every pass a killer, what I had to do was slow down and do the simple things. He told me to watch Roy Keane across the course of a game - he very rarely sprinted (unless he was about to attempt murder on some poor unsuspecting opponent), he spent a lot of the time just gently ambling about. He'd cruise from place to place, pick up the ball and move it on and it was all so fuss-free. There was nothing at all sexy or exciting about his play, but he was enormously effective.

Of course, I couldn't shake the instinct to try to be everywhere and as it turned out I broke my arm, got dropped from that side and nearly ten years later I am still rubbish (as Brett or Sean can surely tell you - I'm now slow and useless rather than fast and useless and still try to hit miracle balls all day), but I always think of that advice when I hear of a midfielder being lambasted for not doing the exciting stuff.

hmm, sounds similar to me. I had one of best fitness in squad, but get tired the pretty easily in a game...also i like going after the ball too much as opposed to marking :p
Suppose its my inexperience and recklessness (probably contributes to my countless overuse injuries)
But i have time,  and I'm studying Lassana Diarra ;)
