R2 - Mariners v Heart (away)

No one taking control at the back like Patrick used to combined with nervousness due to a less than brilliant keeper (that howler for the goal?) is making us look vulnerable.

Quite impressed by heart but we made it look easy for them.

A point we didn't deserve.

Am i imagining things or did we avoid passing to an unmarked Monty in the middle on purpose yesterday?????????

I dont know how many times we could have gone to him in the middle with ease but turned away to try & get it down the edges or return it to the back line. This then caused Flores to have to retreat to the back line to get the ball which is exactly where we dont want him. A simple pass to Monty who was facing goal with no-one in front could have left Flores to move further forward & receive the ball

It looked very pre-meditated to me & really seemed to stifle Flores' influence on the ball in the final third. If anything rather than avoiding the attention Flores will get being the creative force in our side we should be trusting that his skill will be enough to make those attempts null & void. Especially when McGlinchey is starting. I am salivating at the thought of these 2 beginning & finishing a game together but if we avoid having Flores receive the ball up the middle every now & then it will render use very 1 dimensional

Home is Where the Heart is
If anybody thinks the Mariners were fortunate today, if any Heart fans think they were robbed, they only have to look at the tally of corners – eleven to the Mariners, two for the Heart. You could not have a greater statement of intent of the Mariners approach to this game. Watching the first half today I wondered just who was the home side? The Heart were reduced to feeding on the scraps of Mariners’ mistakes and occasional breakaways.
Sainsbury headed against the bar; Duke troubled Redmayne with a ferocious drive. These were the highlights in a half where the Mariners attacked constantly; Rose and Sterjovski had early chances, Sainsbury had another header, and then a volley that stretched Redmayne again, Roux had a shot deflected over.
Heart kicked into life when Hutchinson turned the ball over and Ramsey, who had an impressive game, hit the side netting; Ramsey again featured, left unmarked at the far post for a tame header. It was a little unfair on Hutchinson who was superb in the first half. The Mariners were rolling the ball all over park, Hutchinson the smoothest moving part of the conveyer belt supply
As the teams went in at half-time it was the Mariners who had controlled the game but at a slow pace; all the statistics were in their favour: possession, position, balls into the area, attempts at goal and corners. It seemed only a matter of time until they put the game to bed.
That was until Pasfield showed us why we need to be worried about replacing Mat Ryan. A half-volley from Mebrahtu bounced awkwardly, at catchable height, but the unfortunate Pasfield spilled the ball and Williams took the easy chance. Fitzgerald had the chance to equalise but hit his shot well over and then the Heart were in again. The ball was lost in midfield; Ramsey crossed to Williams who gave Pasfield no chance. Suddenly the Mariners were looking lost; unable to cope with the pace of Mebrahtu and Williams on the break. The defence and the midfield were being pulled too far apart.
If Pasfield had given the game to Heart with that spilled ball he was to make up for it with two brilliantly desperate saves. Mebrahtu outpaced Sainsbury and was in again but Pasfield’s outstretched left peg blocked the ball. It was a turning point. The cavalry was on for the Mariners – McGlinchey for Fitzgerald, Simon for Sterjovski. Flores lifted his game and the Mariners rolled up their sleeves and pushed forward.
Patrick Kisnorbo, an occasional Socceroo, has spent most of his professional career playing in England’s The Championship and in a moment of madness showed us all his basic Neanderthal Championship qualities. Referee Ben Williams had warned both Matt Simon and Kisnorbo to cut out the push and shove before a corner. Kisnorbo didn’t listen and when the excellent corner put Redmayne under pressure Kisnorbo wrapped his arm around Simon’s neck. Ben William needed no second invitation and awarded the stone cold penalty. Flores needed no second invitation and coolly placed the ball past Redmayne. Game on! The Mariners were back in it.
Impressive interplay between Flores, Simon and Roux had Roux’s cross hit a wayward arm; another penalty and Flores again, super cool, tucked it home.
Heart broke away again and Pasfield’s legs again saved what seemed a certain winner for David Williams.
Arnie can’t be too upset; it was a terrific fight back. The Mariners are in the process of rebuilding and look well on track to challenge for leading honours again. Pasfield’s error had kicked this game into life and his two saves were his and the Mariners’ redemption but he won’t be happy. Flores’ class shone through with the two penalties; Roux impressed with confident play; I liked the work of Marcel Seip and it was good to see signs of Matty Simon looking like his old self –his nasty late lunge for a yellow card included! Hutchinson was my MoM for his calm controlled play and underestimated work rate.

lucky you .it was the worse defensive display I've seen from a mariners team in 5 or 6 years.
we were shite . we should be refunding the point to heart . god knows mebrahtu murdered so many chances.

if your gunna watch a replay .hide your razor blades .have a bottle of scotch at your side and probably a chicken wire screen in front of the telle.he legend that is
a tea towel might be handy as a handchief won't cut it. for the tears
I seem to remember us being over run by Gold Coast who made Griffiths and t

I seem to remember the Mariners being over run by Gold Coast with Halloran in particular making Griffiths and the legend that is Wilko look like revolving doors - and Pasfield saving our bacon that day - we came back to draw 3-3 and reached the Grand Final that season. I am not drinking scotch or worried about razor blades :)

team just needs some time to gel, there was little fluency or understanding in combination but it's to be expected all things considered.
given time and esp. if we keep Arnie this team will be deadly.
heart were much improved from last year but when we play them in Jan there will no doubt about the outcome

I didn't see 100% of the game (maybe 65%) but was less than impressed.

My observations....Siep looked very decent until they nearly scored the third when he was a bit lost. The back 4 is massively missing the control and calm of Dutchy and to the one or two muppets that rated Ando above Dutchy last season.....be careful what u wish for in future!
Pasfield is a great shot stopper, those two saves were brilliant but the howler was a worry (still maty used to do a couple each season).
I'm still not getting the love in with Hutcho this season. He is slow, ponderous, gives the ball away a lot and turns back rather than attacks. His only positive is he is protecting the nervous centre backs quite well.
Monty looks great going forward this year but like Hutcho he also needs to cherish the ball a bit more.
Storm boy is a rough diamond.
Fitzgerald miss was terrible and he need to lift a gear.
Flores is quality and those around him need to lift a cog.
Weemac improved things dramatically.
Simon should start in front of sterj.
Duke did well.

Overall we are looking like we will finish 5th or 6th but hopefully we will gel soon.

Highlight was YA..great stuff.

Happy to come away with the point after dropping 0-2! Some calls went our way and we escape remaining undefeated. I am a firm believer we will not see the best of our team until mid season so if we can keep close with the competition leaders, we will make our move in the second half of the year. Adelaide will be a big test this Saturday.

All has been said regarding the performance, Flores and Roux were the pick of the bunch in my view. I give mention to Pasfield who despite a shaky start kept us in the game - what about the save to deny Williams his third! Brilliant! Warming to the thought of Pasfield as our long term option. Duke excites me and I can see him being snapped up by an overseas club. So much energy and strong off both feet. Sees the target and SNAP! Love this guy. I genuinely believe he can make the World Cup squad.

Bring on Adelaide!

A bit of sour grapes from the Melbourne press this morning, the Herald Sun referring to the first penalty as a nothing and calling for a complete revamp of the refereeing system and use something similar to the AFL and get former players to be refs... right mates. Whatever.

Addendum: I think their dourness may be influenced by Ange's "two diabolical decisions" quote too and Contreras' two week ban by the match review panel.

Good result, we are obviously a work in progress and i can't see us hitting our straps till about the 5th game. When we do though, we will be some team. I think we have alot more improving to do than any other team.
