My main concern was the speed with which we brought the ball out from defence. Any slower & we'd be going backwards.....oh, yes, well...
In fairness to the guys, we've only had the same starting 11 in consecutive matches once all season. This does make it difficult, but tonight's effort was woeful.

We were going backwards at times. And when we were getting the ball forward (usually down the wing) there was nobody getting into position in the middle of the field.

We need a creative spark in attack and we need strikers that can get in position.

We sucked balls big time.

First 20 mins was great. We completely dominated them and looked like we would win 3 or 4 nil.

For some stupid reason we decided that 1.0 was enough and we could close out the game......what a massive mistake.suddenly a pathetic victory side was not longer harried into mistakes and was allowed to work there way back into the game.
The penalty howler was a disgrace from a clearly retarded referee and his simpleton linesman (western side) but to concede that goal in extra time was pathetic and who the f**k is our defensive coach?
The keeper does well to knock the ball onto the bar and our defenders simply stand watching...not good enough in under 9s.

The worst moment of the game was in the second half when I think it was fitzy got the ball on the right hand flank and squared the ball back into the box.....we didn't have a single f**king player in the 18yard box to challenge for the ball.....not one single player!!!
I have been playing since I was 7 years old and watching the game since I was 5yo and have NEVER ever seen that before.
We missed Monty massively and if he had played instead on Hutcho I'm sure we would have won, having said that the team were pathetic overall with no shining lights.

Reddy 6. Conceded 3 and beaten at the near post but the back for was shite so I feel sorry for him.
Roux 6. Clearly shows quality but still is a very rough diamond defensively.
Ando 5. Really poor. I think Siep is a better option.
Bosnar 7. I think he was a fault on the 3rd goal but looks very promising.
Rose 6. Also at fault on the third goal but at least has a dig. Average but the back four were collectively shite.
Fitz 6. Worst game since he was originally dropped.
Hutcho 5. Terrible.
Carceras 6. Can't tackle.
Beanie 6..5 . Good goal and played well in patches but needs to dominate more.
Simon 6. Lead the f**king line son. Enjoyed seeing Leijer getting a kick in the chops.
Sterj. 5. Rubbish. Passing poor and back to being a passenger.

Impossible to do a 321 as everyone was pathetic. With possible exception of Bosnar

Would need to watch it again, but the difference between our first and second halves was ludicrous. The later it got, the worse our shape was. Too narrow, too flat, too slow.

It wasn't Hutch playing vertical lobs at Simon as if that was going to somehow generate an undeserved goal. It happened so often it was like watching the Socceroos in Holger's latter days. Horrible football. The final whistle was like the ref stopping the fight because we weren't able to throw a punch anymore.

I don't know how flattened the boyz were after the roar game.
the roar were flat against the drive by's
saw mr kim at the gates coming in ,he looked good with the kids signing everything before he came in.
after the worst game i'd seen from the lads in since nicky travis was playing.
the kiddy kick on the park was gold. rosey walked straight up and gave the lad a ball (gold moment)

umm also cernak looked good when he came on , bosnar looks hard , talked a lot .

hi ho ,hi ho ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Positive-
Bosnar looked good, a couple of crunching tackles without getting a yellow. Hard, intimidating, legal defending. Love it!
His free kicks looked good, particularly the one that went up and over onto the target. Power is not his only trick.
So far looks like a good pick up.

Negative-
It drives me nuts when a team score one goal and then start defending it, then only pull their finger out when they fall behind.
When at home we should monster all the way. (Within reason)
Referee???? It was a clear penalty.

Observations from last nights woeful performance -

Bosnar looks very promising, going to be a leader on the field.

Playing with Hutch makes Caceras totally ineffective although he may bleed yellow and be club captain having Hutch on the park is killing our ability to play forward with any sort of speed. We cover this early in the game with players working hard but as the game goes on a players tire it is a massive problem. The midfield combination has to be Monty and Caceras.

A-League refereeing is woeful, and gutless, the linesmen are even worse!

The biggest concern though has to be Mossey and the changes and lack of. Even before we went 3 - 1 down we were struggling no changes. After we go 3 - 1 he doesn't throw on his extra striker he brings on Cernak. Even when he does bring on the best finisher and most dangerous looking player we have the plays him out on the right and makes him totally ineffective. Not sure what is going on with Mossey and Duke but he has gone form scoring and impressing as part of the Australian team to the bench at the Mariners and being played out of position when he does come on.

Great work from the new CEO, the kick about on the pitch, he made sure all the players walked round following the comments from last game and really seems to be driving the community engagement.......hopefully the performances don't undo this.

Happy with Bosnar but we missed 3 things
1. Monty. full stop.
2. a playmaker. with Kim in and a few weeks to gel and we'll be right
3. reasonable refereeing. ultimately I think the score line was a lie

overall I don't think we were that bad, especially early on, but were nowhere near where we were in previous weeks. it's back to not having coordination or understanding for a few weeks till the players get to know each other again I'm said

also for those who worry about backwards playing or hutchs play please reread dibbo's description of how this team current plays tactically (also dubbed the 'mariners way' which is being implemented by our coaching staff all the way down) it's really a very good overview

much of our back play last night was the right thing to
do and if you watch the game knowing what the teams plan is hutch actually does it very well

Just watched the CCM-MV highlights (missed the game)

Our defensive line should be doing laps for punishments. The goals MV got hark back to the early days. MV didn't do anything special for those goals - each goal was simply a player who was completely unmarked. Bloody weak.

Can't believe that penalty wasn't given, atrocious decision. I noticed the AR actually signalled that it was outside the PA - if the ref can't tell then it's on the AR to signal it, though I'm really surprised the ref couldn't spot it. Unless the AR was just doing the whole 'agree with the ref even if he's wrong' thing

Still, I did see one MV goal was correctly disallowed by a very, very tight decision. Tight enough that I wouldn't have been surprised it if was missed.

The problems is not the way we play tactically and Dido's post is a very good explanation of it. The problem is in the execution when Hutch is playing. You need to be able to keep pushing to exploit the openings you create and then be able to execute at speed to take advantage of them. With Hutch on the park he takes a far too conservative approach to the style and takes us backwards in situations where we should be exploiting the openings we have created. He also goes backwards and puts the defence under pressure leading to us turning over possession in our own half rather than going forward and turning it over in their half.

With Monty and Caceras on the park the decision making is a lot better so we go backwards when we should but get forward with a lot more speed and purpose. Monty release Caceras to go forward where as Hutch doesn't.

This.

There were 6 people between 18-25 yards out just standing there. Best cross of the night. Not long before, Simon was complaining about the ball not getting crossed to him, he was 19 yards out from goal behind 4 players!

That performance was abysmal. Victory are at best, the 5th best team in the comp and we made them look like Bayern Munich.

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
well...that was painful, I knew we were gonna see goals but geez, and it would be probably alright if Victory had to work for 'em...but geez they were a bit soft...I can hardly wait till Monty hits the pitch again..A.C wont look so lost ...and I wont say anything about our fearless leader cause his untouchable so I wont bother...so when Bernie was subbed off, would that be considered "a pat on the back, have a break" sub, cause he looked like he had plenty of legs left to me..I woulda subbed East Gosfords Sportsman of the year well before I woulda subbed Bernie....Bay 18 almost had a meltdown when Cernak came on..I havent heard that much abuse from that lot of a bloke who hasnt touched the ball yet since Reddy got the gloves...I cant offer an opinion, other than he done nothing wrong, due to the miniscule amount of time he was on, so I wont....NOW the defenders I think we can all agree that Fast Eddie was pretty damn good, that fabled foot of his was rapid, cant wait till he warms it up properly.... Zac needs dropping, seriously 91% of his passes go sideways , and not just last night either...I'd say he misses tesco and Pat, but thats hardly an excuse...I do have a solution, which will probably get me yelled at, but f*8k it...drop Zac and insert Marcel, (and it aint cause i'm dutchish either), ..I have the suspicion that due to Eddies long stint in Euro football, Seip and him might just gell into a fine peice of work...

I do know that if we play like that next week...The Barrell Boys might just give us a touch up

Well my mama told me there’ll be days like this..

Can anyone hold their head high… IMO ya … did we learn anything .. heaps and I think Mossey is a good enough coach to identify…

One thing that clearly SCREAMS to me is aside from Matty Simon we have no one who can play [ well do in easy ] with there back to the goal line… Fitzy, Berine, Mile, Caceras … all are great with the ball in front and running on to it… Macka could also play back to goals .. same as Musty, Tommy P, Rogic and Perez …

The league has jumped a couple of levels this year and pressure on the turn over of the ball has greatly increased …. Teams that play forward quickly and not allowing teams to set their defence are doing much better than teams who sit and allow teams to get set…

This is the centre of the Hutch Monty debate … Monty goes forward and plays or tries to play in front of our players especially wide players so they are moving on to the ball… Hutch is more into lets get control of play hold it a little longer and play back to re set the attack… Trouble is we don’t have players with the skill set to play back to goals and direct play on … Fitzy have a very poor game .. however look to where and how he got the ball …

Kim should make a difference hopefully he can play that back to goals role and provide that outfield go to player … Issue will be as it was with Flores [who could also play back to goal] if he gets closed down what options do we have..

Given the squad I come down on the Monty side .. we don’t have the team anymore with a number of players who can play back to goals… so moving forward quickly is important… last year Olly, Macka, Matty S, weeMax who could play back to goals …throw in Trent and Dutchie on the ball … meaning we have players with the skill set for the sit hold and direct play … this year our mids are by and large not greatly skilled at playing back to goal, holding the ball and re setting play…

When I look at MV, WSW, Roar, AU, Nix, SFC I see much stronger squads than we have or at least to date …

My reading of the tea leafs is we are in a squad development phase

Just on the match… had Berine put that goal away… arse shot off the post back to the feet of a striker .. Archie was off side.. and it was inside the box…

Over to Van now as mama told me there would be days like this..

Just, on the Caceres love-in... Hoping that this won't blow up in my face as much as my comment last week but...
Watching him the last couple of weeks, I see that the kid has talent and I think we've all more or less agreed that he's no #10 - at least not yet... He's not strong or experienced enough... But I'm increasingly suspicious that he's not experienced enough for the DM role either, I'm wondering whether Monty made him look good, in a sense. Whenever he gets the ball, he seems to head for the single largest group of opposition players and try to play his way through. As with playing out from the back, there's a time and a place for this and if there's a huge gap right in front of you which will allow you to pass the ball off in a decent position, then that's probably the way to go. I appreciate that there can be advantages to not taking the obvious route, but this approach is just stupid... It was something that frustrated me last week and I noticed it again this week. It's not even that they are coming at him, it just feels like he runs straight to it sometimes.
But then, what do I know... I also didn't think Matty was as shockingly poor as the various forums seem to suggest... I thought the Leijer thing was a reasonable call from the ref, sometimes these things just happen and I don't think that it'd have happened if he'd seen him come in... And it's a bit rich to see Muscat of all, go on about it to the ref. From memory - again - wasn't that Fitz pass, a result of a quick turnover and run, while it was frustrating to see, I got the impression that the rest of the team hadn't really clicked to the fact that the ball was back in our posession yet.

I'm not sure how I would've handled the subs... I think one of the things that's made Bernie valuable since he came back from that trial last year, is that he has started working almost as hard defensively as he does in attack, he tracks back and tries for a turnover... These are some of the same qualities that I see in Matty simon, he might not be as skilled, but he's commonly skilled enough and his work-rate is great. I've complained about it before but, players like BigMac would often stop at the halfway line and do little to get the turnover. Duke can work hard for it but, in my view, one of the reasons why he hasn't worked so well in the wings is that he's not as good at getting the ball as he is at moving it forward. For a game like the one yesterday, I think there was value in having both Matty and Bernie on the pitch, but then, I also think that Duke was needed, so not sure what to do, unless we'd done something like taking off Caceres for Duke and go from there.
To add to my horrifying comments, I actually also though Seip looked reasonable when he came on, he brought a bit of energy to the side, just didn't seem to be able to rub it off on anyone.

Oh an WHOAH! Bl**dy good on the crowd, from the TV at least, the chanting just seemed to raise a notch for every MV goal - that was just extraordinary, when RBB would've gone quiet after the second one ;)

<spreads arms and raises head to the sky> Flame Away! ;)

There is backward passing to maintain posession, shape and to create space but stubbornly playing tikka takka in your own 3rd/half repeatedly putting yourself under pressure coffing up possession to an opposition thats figured you out and virtually nullified your midfield is in my opinion silly. This is my dislike of 'systems' that fail to adapt let alone accounting for different players abilities or opposition.
As others have said im also a little bemused at mossies changes at the end. Tired floating long balls to a lone well covered simon at the death was too little too late.

Victory schooled our usually tight defence a little, attackers with so much space catching them in no mans land many times. Bosnar while I think he gets a pass mark probably shouldnt be blowing up the way he does at his teamates so new to the club especially when his game wasnt perfect. Like the aggression/determination though and is going to be great to see goalkeepers shitting themselves whenever we get a penalty 20-30 metres out :).

Was great fun having a kick on the pitch after the game :headbounce:

My thoughts on the match exactly. Lacking cohesion with all of the changes, but still positives there.

We may hurt for a few weeks more, but once we get going again we should cause all sorts of trouble in the finals.
