They were hanging out on Australia Day in Gosford. Remember, Luis played on Merseyside and between the Scouse locals and the *heaps* of Irish in Liverpool I think Luis will be fine.

True. If you can understand a Scouser then you can generally understand a Paddy.

It could be a great combo.

Liverpool was the only place I went in England where people couldn't understand my (bog-standard-not-ocker suburban Aussie) accent! o_O

A clean sheet just wouldn't have been right.

Finally the opposition making a stupid defensive error and we punished them.

Tara had Luis goal as her moment of the week on shootout. Who said she was all looks.

Rose bud was excellent. 18yr old getting 3points on fox. Well done (what's Garcia got to do to get 3 points).

Izzo's best game but I think reaction saves he is good at. It's free kicks and distribution that is ordinary. Hoping his confidence is buoyed by this game

I agree it is a concern - but probably highlighted yesterday with the absence of a couple of experience players in the spine like Monty and Roy.

Yesterday in the spine we started with Posco, McGing, Rose Jr, Neill, Stella and Bingers. If instead we had Posco, McGing, Rose Jr, Monty, Garcia and Roy I suspect we would hold the ball better. As much as I like McGing a return of Wilko would make a huge impact.

lol, sorry pj, I started to respond to Celerys post, had a call mid way, then finished the post. So yeah, errm, what you said.

Influencing play is actually completely irrelevant to offside.
Needs to be either interfering with play, interfering with an opponent or gaining an advantage by being in an offside position. The last one is strictly collecting a rebound from a defender or the goals. Interfering with an opponent is simply preventing an opponent from being able to play for the ball by obstructing their vision or challenging the opponent for the ball. Given no opponent was in challenging distance, that part is irrelevant - and their view may have been blocked but not in a way that affected play, so that's irrelevant. Interfering with play is simply touching or playing the ball (what 'playing' means is ambiguous. The laws use it in another context where it can only mean touching the ball. Could potentially include a dummy, but that didn't happen here).

Thus, no offside. The fact that he ran for the ball and influenced the defenders doesn't come into it.
I'm almost certain this rule changed prior to this season - where an offside player influencing defenders certainly does come into it, whether they touched it or not. Fabio's run certainly affected the vision of the defenders in question. They were close enough to pursue Austin if Fabio wasn't impeding them.

As others have said though, we were due luck on a 50/50 as it were.

I thought we were lucky on that one, my only thought was that the defenders were running to the same spot irrespective of Fab's run as Austin was arriving at the same time.

And that is the lack of composure on the ball when put under pressure, and the huge amount of turnovers.
36% possession again, we struggle to hold on to the ball but as long as we defend well the goals are still coming. Fox replayed the 2013 GF last week, it was noticeable imo that 3 years on the league is much quicker and a lot more pressing goes on.

rose jr was outstanding , 18 . fmd . he's gotta future
Agree, playing in a key position too.

& yet garcia didn't make the totw :(

Was thinking about that... I'm guessing though that, while he was on there and certainly made a big impact, the visibility of his impact was less as we went into defensive mode...
Not withstanding that I think his cool head had a lot to say in keeping our defence under control for most of the second half.

Walmsley was smart though - in defence Garcia was at the head, with Bingham dropped in behind, level with Austin and Ferreira in what was basically a 4-2-3-1. In attack they swapped and the wingers pushed up so Garcia had space to move away from the CBs.

Garcia didn't do nothing in defence, but he wasn't made to be a watercarrier, and that's just plain sensible.

This is a good plan.
It allows him to be in position to intercept a stray ball coming back while the opposition are trying to press .
Then kill them off.

Is it saturday yet ? Can't wait

I think so too... Although having looked at the rules again, they seem to leave a bit of room for interpretation, in terms of the refs having to make a judgment call on whether the opposition players are actually close enough to play, for the potential interference to make a difference.
So if the Ref/AR made a call that they were too far away to really make a difference anyway, Fab's not offside - I think because Austin would've gotten the ball anyway or something.
It's all pretty loosely defined.
Once that's said... My personal view is that, in spite of people's whinging, Stebre Delovski is by far the best ref in the league... He makes mistakes too, but not even close to being at the same percentage as the others.

It feels a bit like it's by design though - the possession stats... Doesn't feel like we're particularly worried about getting the ball back until they start presenting a threat... I'm wondering if it's by design, to try to limit the impact of relying on Austin, Bingham and Fabio to run so much and so fast.

Izzo seems to have improved immensely since returning from the Olyroos camp.

I think this is right. We were really forcing the issue earlier in the year and getting caught out. I think we're willing to be a lot more circumspect without the ball and pressing only when it's not risky to do so - it was particularly notable on the weekend that we allowed their CBs time and space, and pressed to the flanks when the ball went there, forcing them to make turnovers. I reckon their CBs' pass completion would be very high but their FBs' pass completion much lower because of this.

Defensively there was a real determination to own our own penalty area too - Wellington had scarce time or space and it was such a shame that we conceded because I think it was our most disciplined defensive performance in a while, perhaps for the year.

We were stung wide last week against WSW and we were more careful out there this week too, much more willing to play forward and 'risk' losing the ball, perhaps because it beats a rushed pass inside that gets punished.

Good signs for a team still missing Ascroft, Monty and Roy from the first choice side!

Rule Number 1: play to the whistle. Only opinion that matters is the ref's. Everyone else's is just a debate.

The kiwi defender slowed down and put his hand up. Not because he was impeded by Fab but because he was trying to tell the referee what to do.

But still think we were a little lucky.
