Deserved more from this game but will take the point. Especially after four losses and against a team of City's quality.

Today we showed that we can beat the top sides. We can compete and we can win. Our system if executed correctly will get us results. It was disappointing to draw but the simple fact that it was disappointing to take only a point is a giant improvement on last year. Paulo showed up the arrogant prick John Van't Schip tactically and without their 3 million dollar gift and two marquees. Paulo showed today that he deserves to be a coach in the A-League. Stuff the team that stole my Heart, I'm a Mariner forever.

Thought we deserved all 3 points. Neil's first half was solid - his second half was his usual in defence - wrong side and letting City get in behind him multiple times - happened right in front of me - people were baying for his blood - but he linked and attacked well.

Anyway... heroic effort to do that on a 3 day turn around after playing in those conditions.

City got back into the game last ten minutes because we were - or more accurately perhaps Monty was spent. He was INCREDIBLE in the midfield tonight. Putting in that performance after playing 3 days ago in blistering Aussie heat at 35...?? unbelievable. Best performance of any HAL player this year over 80 minutes that I've seen.

Berry did well also - he Monty and Powell (who was solid) bossed the mids for the first time in 4 or 5 games. And Caceres and fitzy helped us do it - which was a really nice change.

The pen was disappointing - if we'd just had the legs or maybe even just a third fresh sub to be able to bring on we probably wouldn't have been in that position and would have held out better.

Fab was excellent when put centrally. Bring the ball down in traffic and move towards your opponents goal forcing them to run backwards with a perfectly timed lay off to Trent for his sensational goal. What a star that boy Trent is - as a bright a prospect for Aussie football as Rogic imo. Okon is knocking it out of the park too. No rights to have been this good against that opposition with such a young squad tonight. Give him half city's budget and we demolish them.

Sure 3 points would have been nice - but it's a truly great performance all things considered.

Happy New Years mariners forum family. Wishing you and yours, a wonderful, prosperous and brilliant 2017.

Best

You nailed it FP, Monty was the man tonight. If he wasn't a Mariner legend already, he would be after tonight's performance. A true inspiration for all young players.

Young Trent is going to be such a star, it's the little things, the runs, the touches, the vision, sure he makes a few mistakes here and there, but my god, he shows a maturity beyond his years. The more games he plays the better he will get, a future Socceroo in my mind.

I really like Berry tonight too, I thought he was excellent.

In Okon and his staff I trust, he will be the man to get us back, just give him the ability to mould his squad into his own.

Wishing you all a happy new year!!!

Monty was unbelievable. How he didn't get a yellow card was surprising as he was nibbling at them all game. Best game in a long time from him

Moment of the night goes to the ball boy who took the flag off Timmy. It's on Twitter on the game thread. Maybe someone else can post it.

Great effort, could so easily have crumbled after Timmy's goal.

So thought Roy's 2nd had gone in. We went all Bulut only to see the keeper knock it away before Trent got the tap in. That miss cost us the game but could just as easily lost if the young kid from City could shoot. The fluff on one on one was horrible.

Own Goal McGing actually stopped a couple without scoring.

Galloway stay on your feet. It was a youngster not Fornaroli who was last seen in Harry's back pocket.

How the F does Neill keep doing it. He's like the pissed relo's you thought went home but are still there. Every time he gets dropped someone gets hurt in the 1st half. Then the ball finds him for most of the match. As he got tired he got very sloppy and was skinned a few times but City never made him pay. He also makes nice runs then doesn't know what to do and stuffs the pass.

Berry was better than Rose has been.

Appiah's energy and hustle was good.

Wombat how long do you need with Trent to toughen him up? Pulling out when had a chance to get the ball in 1st half when Bouzanis came for it. If he attacked it would have won a penalty. Want to see hiim Challenging the keeper like Roy. That said the boy makes things happen.

Great crowd and the boys feed off it.

Should have won, could have lost but I enjoyed the game and happy with the performance (while not perfect).

Happy New Year everyone. Enjoy the jeckell and Hyde ride of being Mariners fans

Happy New Year all. Some quality analysis of the game, and deserved praise for a few players who stepped up after a below-par showing on Wednesday.

I'd like to think we can compete with Sydney next Sunday - we may not end up with a result but I think we can match them for long periods.

Monty was booked wasn't he?
Second in two games, if he was.

According to the Mariners site only Berry was booked,
Kamau 30’ Brattan 64’ for them.

According to the HAL site we had two booking, they had three.

With respect we showed we can draw at home with the team in 4th, but I see what you're getting at.
Exciting game, with a much improved midfield and two quality goals from us.
However it's very difficult to get 3pts if you concede twice.
What happened with Jacques Faty? I was at the bar.
Happy New Year everyone.

Hammy right in front of me . He looked gutted . Looks like his kids were here for xmas to. Dame shame .

It cost a sub to .if we could have got traves on at 2-1 ,i think he controls the game and we win .

Monty was definitely booked in the 2nd half when brought down Caceras. Must've been close to 80' or so

Good call. Monty (my MOTM), was gassed at the end... and who could blame him? It seemed like for the whole team, the lactic acid kicked in after our 2nd goal. Dont forget that we played in the heat, against a top side, interstate, only 3 days earlier. Definitely needed Trav's experience and skill out there in the closing stages.

fire the whole band & replace them with that bagpipe guy in bay 16
Short memory. I remember all the whinging on these boards about that bagpiper back in the day. Seems the grass is always greener.

Was it the same guy from all those seasons ago?

So he's taken the field unfit and/or not warmed up. If I were the coach I'd be asking some searching questions there.
