Thought Bray was only rumour, had seen it confirmed as of yet.

If so- then dumb move, factoring in Izzo going away with the Olyroos in January (if the selector's dont change their mind :p after his recent performances)

Oldfield would have provided farrrrrr more experience/age and physicality in the box.
Chris Oldfield takes up a visa spot.

That my friend is what's more commonly known as ......

"Fcuking - LOYALTY "

(Edit: the following is directed to LFCMariner)

You can curse the Owner
You can curse the Coach
Curse a player or sometimes even the entire teams performance.

But never, EVER 'walk-away' from your Club...........
NO MATTER WHAT !

See my later post for clarification. I'm not going anywhere. But there's only so many occasions where I can alter my schedule to catch the CCM game at a pub somewhere and invest 2 hours of my free time to watch, or stay updated via the live score update, before it seems pointless for the time being.

Saturday, 26 December 2015 -

Debutant ‘keeper Tom Heward-Belle believes some “unlucky circumstances” contributed to Central Coast Mariners’ heavy defeat to Sydney FC on Boxing Day.
The Mariners were crushed 4-1 by the Sky Blues at Allianz Stadium, with the young gloveman making an unexpected debut off the bench after first-choice ‘keeper Paul Izzo was sent off before the half hour mark.

Already trailing 2-0, Heward-Belle’s first task was to pick the ball out of his own net as Mickael Tavares converted a penalty but the youngster pulled off a string of fine saves from then on to mark a solid first Hyundai A-League appearance.

In a drama-charged first half, the visitors not only saw Izzo dismissed but also conceded two penalties.

“A couple of decisions didn’t go our way early but that’s never an excuse,” Heward-Belle told ABC Radio afterwards.

“We kept playing after those decisions and all-round it was just some unlucky circumstances.

“I think we played hard today we were just a little bit unlucky.”

While disappointed to be on the end of a heavy defeat, Heward-Belle was delighted to have got his first taste of A-League action.

It wasn’t that long ago that he was watching Sydney FC games chanting from the Cove and on Saturday night found himself playing in front of them.

“It’s a weird feeling because as a youngster I was sitting in the Cove over there and hearing the chants is not new to me,” he said.

“I had my mum, dad and sister here watching as well.

“I obviously didn’t expect to play but this club is all about youth and has prepared me well so I didn’t feel out of ease.

“It was a good experience. I really wanted to get out there and get a taste of the A-League.”

With Izzo to now miss the New Year’s Eve clash against Wellington, Heward-Belle is likely to gain his first A-League start.

New signing Alastair Bray isn’t available until after the New Year, meaning fellow youth team ‘keeper Adam Pearce will be on the bench against Phoenix.

The defeat against Sydney was the Mariners’ sixth in a row – a new club record – and Tony Walmsley’s side is now without a win in their last 11 games.

Chris Oldfield takes up a visa spot.

ABSOLUTELY WRONG !

This is exactly why I think signing Alastair Bray (if it's true edit: ok true) is a dumb move, over signing Chris Oldfield.

The only reason other A-League clubs DIDN'T sign Oldfield (Victory & MCity were both interested in him) was because at the start of this season he
WAS a visa-spot player ...... NOW (soon) He's NOT !!!

Other club's didn't want to use a visa-spot for a GK, although MCity eventually DID - albeit giving one to Sorrenson who's an ex-EPL Keeper with a great CV.

I'll say it nice and clearly .............

Oldfield WILL be a non-visa player come January !!!!

His Goal Keeping pedigree comes from being identified by Liverpool at age 12 yo and he stayed there until 18/19 yo becoming a reserve keeper to none other than Pepe Reina, selected to go on Liverpool's pre-season World tour in his last year. He left to go to the lower leagues in Engkand to get 1st team football knowing he was never going to push Pep out, who stayed on for many years.

Oldfield went to the Welsh Premier League, before coming to Australia, hoping to crack the A-League via the State NPL's (in Vic) but faced that hurdle of taking up a visa-spot.

This is NOW not a problem for him, nor would it have been for us.

Alternatively, Alistair Bray made Melb Hearts NYL team and was subsequently cut loose.

Oldfield could have been a solid mainstay for the Mariners for min of 3 years in this League (maybe more) before considering a return to Europe or elsewhere and there's the loss of potential transfer ca$$$h for CCM. :(

P.S: Oldfield's Youtube Videos shit all over Brays.

From the 442 forum - Bowden is our own cbowden9000. Benjamin is a South Melbourne supporter that has watched both play.

@Benjamin - what's the word on these two?

Best two keepers in the NPL. I would have thought both are good enough.

Bray would have got a senior deal at Heart but he mangled his shoulder and missed a fair chunk of the season just when he would have been stepping up to get a senior contract, was excellent last season or two though.

Oldfield, once he's got his citizenship, is quality too.

Not sure if either is first team quality - but when the competition is Izzo, you'd give them a chance.

I work with football people who follow the League and generally don't follow the Mariners and I can say hand on heart that nobody had ever said to me they'd take Caceres off us.
Not that 442 account for many intelligent people but there is a lot of love for him there

None of our penetration in early games came centrally and then we lost our wingers.
Exactly. We never go to the middle.
Fitzy tries but gets cut off by defence but is usually after receiving the ball on the wing.
Storms pass to Roy the other day was also a cut in run but a rarity up the middle.
That is where the caceras disappointment comes from. He just isn't their to pass to

In slightly more positive news, Brenton Speed's reporting that Simon has been cited by the MRP:

Make that great news:
Simon suspended for one A-League match
The independent Match Review Panel (MRP) - consisting of Simon Micallef (Chair), Alan Contini and Alan Davidson - reconvened today (Tues) to consider a Citation Incident involving Matt Simon of Sydney FC (the Player) which arose in or around the 42nd minute of Sydney FC’s Round 12 Hyundai A-League Match against Central Coast Mariners on Saturday 26 December 2015.

The Player was cited by the MRP in accordance with the Hyundai A-League Disciplinary Regulations (Regulations).

In reviewing the Citation Incident during this afternoon’s meeting, the MRP took into consideration all of the available evidence, including the submissions lodged by Sydney FC on behalf of the Player.

The MRP determined that the Player committed the offence of R6 – Serious unsporting conduct against Jake McGing.

The MRP confirmed that the Player will serve a suspension of one (1) Hyundai A-League match, being the minimum sanction for the offence.

Hrmmm... if they've decided that he did strike McGing it feels like he got off bloory cheap I think.
Consider that Izzo got two yellows, neither of them from outright malicious conduct and missed out on the rest of the game as well as the one match ban.
Matty can't claim any other excuse really, and only gets one...
Anyway, i might just be bitter ;-) what do i know?

Convicted of "Serious unsporting conduct" and 1 game suspension seemd a bit of an oxymoron.

Anyway, not unhappy with that. Out of order and lacked class but the strike itself wasn't too serious.

What's scariest is all 4 officials missed it. If they saw it and ignored it they couldn't have gone to the MRP

No one watches the players when a ball is cleared? Is our officiating really that bad?

Agree 100%. Ref should have been watching that area because conflicts arise there - I've learned that the hard way myself. near AR should be watching that area because that's where the 2nd last line of defence is. 4th official should constantly scan the field unless he's fulfilling his other duties, and the far AR should also be constantly scanning the field while making sure he stays in line with the 2nd last defender. Maybe the far AR couldn't really tell what happened, I could accept that, but missing this is inexcusable - and it isn't just the referee this falls on. But yes, even the 4th official or far AR can intervene for something like this.

One thing that could happen is that the referee is looking in the rough direction but focussing on another player, and the other officials think he's seen it and made his decision not to do anything (which would explain, but not excuse, the error). But with wireless comms, even that shouldn't be a possibility any more. 'Ben, see that punch?" "What punch?" *flag goes up*

I'm increasingly thinking wireless comms are in the 'total wank' box with the on-field shaving foam. I'm not convinced they're doing anything useful - but maybe it's easy to say when I haven't used them.
I mean, for the MRP to suspend a player for something the ref missed when it's something they should have seen is quite a serious indictment upon the lack of performance of the officials. It's basically saying they let the game go to shit, when they're saying Simon would not have finished that game if the officials have done their job.

Still too many games decided by the referee. If the first penalty wasn't incorrectly given then Izzo would be on the park, and they would have 3 goals if that - whereas there's a fair chance we would have 2 if Simon was penalised.

But of course, the MRP did absolutely nothing about the multiple SFC dives, but they've always been disgustingly inconsistent.

If they did something about Ninkovic, they'd have had to do something about Berisha.

Or vice versa.
