I estimated 9-10k before the game so wasn't surprised with the official figure. I normally estimate within 1 or 2k so have a reasonable handle on it.

We got 6 tickets at 12 ish and the pax was approx 7900. Apparently the queues where constant till kick off so you would think say another 1000 tickets sold. we have 6000 members so if only half came that would be closer to 11000.

20 mins to go I thought 7000 or 8000. By kickoff I thought 9000 - 10000. by 20 mins in I was thinking 11000 - 12000. There was a very noticeable increase in the 20 minutes after kickoff

The crowd was 110% wrong. The stadium is getting the official number and it will be released shortly.10k+.Club took a wild swing at a number because one would assume fox sports needed one to put up.

It just all seems a little too strange and such a big coincidence that the "system" broke given the importance of the crowd in the context of things. Accuse me of being in the :tinfoilhat: brigade but you don't come up with a precise number like they did if something is not amiss you would just say around 9,500 and admit the system was down. Maybe Bruce pulled the plug on the system at that number when it was obvious we were heading above 10k :).

10,019 official figure released today after review by Ticketek and Stadium.

Still seemed closer to 11K.

I've got to agree - but 10,019 is still over 20% larger than the corresponding game last year. We will need to increase over 25% over last year's Heart game to break 10,000.

I thought we showed plenty of ticker in that game. T'was an exciting 2nd half and if that doesn't get those first timers' back for at least one more gaem this season, then nothing will.

The play out from the back frustrated the hell out of me though. Remeber the days where Maty used to treat the ball like a hot potato? As soon as he touched it, he immediately rolled it out to one of the backs of delivered a pin-point kick to one of the forwards. Why have we gone the polar opposite?

Is it because we just dont have the cattle? Is it beceause our guys aren't fit enough or organised enough to immediately counter attack? Is there some stategy from Moss that I'm just not seeing?

We stuff around with the ball at the back. Those side pass goal kicks get on my nerves. I don't think we have the players who have enough skill to be doing that, particularly Ando, and to a lesser extent Bosnar. Had Brisbane had Berisha, we would've been slaughtered... Game of Thrones style slaughtered.

Thoughts?

All teams stuff around at the back. Asking Reddy, who really does think the ball is a hot potato, to move the ball as quickly as Ryan, is a lost cause. The defenders can only pass the ball forward if players are available for the pass or create space themselves. Brisbane identified Hutch as the outlet and closed him down; Caceres stood and watched. Neither Anderson or Bosnar has the skill or pace to create space; Poscoliero is the best we have. I could go on but the simple answer is we don't have the cattle...

Actually, I was thinking about it during the game. They were playing with heart again, which was nice, but they still aren't moving much for each other in the defensive area, which, to be fair to Reddy, I think is part of his problem. They stand there and watch him holding the ball, waiting for him to play it, until the other side has applied so much pressure that he has to play it to one of the CBs standing all the way down in the corner.
It is like we only start moving forward because the other side gets so tired of running back and forward between CBs/Goalie and back, that they back off enough to get the ball into play, or because Reddy becomes impatient and, invariably, kicks the ball out/to one of their players... If only he could actually bloody hit one of our guys when he plays it out, it'd be an awesome start ;)... But it'd probably help if Hutch didn't have to run back to get it every time too...

Agree with both comments. There is no movement to pass to. I think Anderson is ordinary on the ball but while watching the roar game all out let's where standing there saying pass the ball but they were all standing still with defenders quite close. If the players don't move to create space things aren't going to improve. We have a decent structural movement once the ball gets to someone on the wing but no one creates any space when we are shut off.
Hutch sits in the middle. Roux and rose sit on the edges and Cacerass sits someone where in between. The forwards sit up front waiting for the innevatible long ball.

I think the crowd was around 11k & I`m usually pretty well on the mark with the crowd figures each game.
In saying that , I think everyone there got there money`s worth.
Obviously a win would have topped the night but that second half was as exciting as most of the best games I`ve seen the Mariner`s play.
A big improvement & probably the best we have played this season.

If a common thread unites good teams that have beaten us, partic. in the ACL, it is speed. Speed comes from players' off the ball movement and their colleagues' awareness thereof. These days teams are ready for our every move.

I got frustrated by the ball movement between the backs and then due to midfield not moving the back pass to Reddy was thumped down the ground to return possession to Brisbane - not Reddys fault but rather our structure and our off ball lack of movement. And this falls at the feet of Mossy , if you are going to institute a possession style gameplan you have to have each player doing their thing and 1. I don't reckon they are and 2. I don't reckon we have the cattle to do so.

This was a call to arms, the plight of the mariners well voiced on many mediums. Saying this after a disappointing attendance just sounds delusional to me..
In regards to #standupforthemariners , the only reason I knew about it is because, in following the Yellow Army on fb, it came up as relevant. Had I not followed YA, I may not have heard of it.

But I'm interstate, so I don't get to see what's being done visually (eg how many posters, how easy it would be to miss it).

However, I don't think we've had a boxing day match before, so it's hard to get a measure of how that would normally impact upon the crowds. Any regular match we can get a better idea of how effective campaigning is in terms of crowd numbers, but boxing day? What would a regular crowd have been anyway? Who knows, I could say boxing day would reduce crowds for reasons A and B, or increase it for reasons X and Y.

Real shame we lost our NYE match. And giving the boys boxing day AND New year's day is brutal scheduling. At least give them one

. psst it was the 27th

. in terms of getting the word out - the fans were driving the 'standup' campaign but it was being picked up in the media, various articles linked here on the forum spoke of it ... it got to the point where the club had to acknowledge it too

. with regard to the crowd you are correct we will never know. most of the people that spoke to me about the 'standup' campaign were already committed to attending. the problem is that even yesterday i had people talking to me about the NYE game, people that hadn't even realised it wasn't on. there is still such a long way to go ... and that is part of my frustration about the push into 'new markets' - an already thin marketing budget just continues to get thinner

. most of the regulars that sit around me were there on the 27th, a couple were away (it is the holiday season after all) and some brought additional 'guests' ... but i did note a lot of additional people around me and this could be due to:

  • holiday season
  • cool day (we sit on the sunny side)
  • the call to arms
  • any number of reasons as you said
. but the majority of the 'new faces' were not wearing mariners gear typically only sprinkling. which tells me they are casual fans that need to be converted to full-time fans. on the whole they seemed to enjoy the experience - it was probably a good exciting game to get these types to ... hopefully they continue to come back

Of course it was the 27th. That's what happens when I try to construct sentences on new year's day morning :p

I know there was a lot of mention on here of the campaign, I was just more curious as to how effective it would be in reaching the supporters who don't follow us on social media (ie take that more passive approach) - though mobilising the fans who follow on social media but may not always go to games was also important.

Still, I thought it was a good game for the casual fans - second half was exciting, and a lot of noise was made by the YA.

This deserves much more discussion. Find an answer to that question and a lot of our problems go away.

. which is why i mentioned the other (mass media). social media was the start ... the problem is, it is very difficult to get the word out via the media to those that take very little interest in the football (rather than seeking it out)

. the roadside signs up here - digital signage on some arterials and the f3 as well as posters on 'telegraph' poles have helped to get the message out. i can only imagine what this may have done to our crowds over the last 18 months when we had a championship to capitalise on if it had been a focus rather than cost-cutting

Still, I thought it was a good game for the casual fans - second half was exciting, and a lot of noise was made by the YA.

. the noise was not just coming from the YA (their ranks actually appeared to grow throughout the game). by the end many of the 'new faces' around us were getting involved with the occasional chant too
