Good professional win. We did fall apart in the second half but just did enough to finally get the monkey off our back.

Ryan 6. Started well but was unravelling badly as the match went on. Huge misjudgment on ball that hit the crossbar...that was embarrassing. Still the bloke has been superb so one slightly dodgy game can be quickly excused.
Bojic. 7.5. Great game and quality goal.
Wilko 8. Top game and might have slightly outshone his partner tonight he was that dominant.
Duchy 8. Rock solid as usual
Rose 6.5. Some good moments but overall just average.
Weemac 6.5. Industrious but lacked polish in final third.
Griffo. 6.5. Not bad.
Hutcho 7. Pretty solid again. Lovely ball for Matty in first half was classy and showed his confidence ATM.
Amini 7. Good game and great finish. Should have had a second.
Simon. 7.5. Shows some real quality at times now. His link play is very good.
Bernie 7. A handful again. Him and Simon were fouled all night. Lovely ball for Amini in first half.

Subs. All did ok. Olly was the pick.
Arnie. 7. Got us the win but our shape was bad in 2nd half and he was a little slow to react and perhaps didn't make correct subs.

Mom Wilko 3pt
Dutchy 2.
Simon 1pt.

Overall we were pretty decent and well drilled.

We are to be feared! .......and....we are top of the league I said we are top of the league!!!

. as the boys went off for half-time i said 'i hope arnie keeps them up for the second half' ... but it seems he tried to calm them down at half-time

. i thought it was very sporting of us in the second half to continually offer them the ball. i s'pose with the result secure we were doing our bit for the league by helping brisbane find some form again :p

. geez those last 10mins were stressful ... glad i wasn't in brisbane - don't think i could have gone through that again

. two very well taken goals tonight

. maybe just extremely confident he knew where his goal was ... its not often someone can point out bad positioning or poor judgement of the kid. it reminded me of a batsman 'letting one go' in the cricket where the ball just misses the stumps. doesn't matter by how much it misses if it misses

. interesting comparison thrown up by fox before the game that our overall stats are ahead of brisbane for 2011

I completely missed the game (trying to earn brownie points) by going to Carols by Candlelight.
As no-one has posted the final score I take it it was 2-0.

Thanks also for the summary Wombat.Very much appreciated.

2-1 and a very nervous ending. Danning's shot that was going well wide got a huge deflection of Patrick and Matt had no hope.

Right.
Great result.
I hope we have finally learned our lesson from that second half and it serves us well for the rest of the season and into Asia.

There is no one to fear.
Lets get this done Mariners.

:eek:verhead:

I think winning a match with a tense ending like that will be good for the Mariners. If they find themselves in another nail-biter with the Roar, they know they can go on and win it.

WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!

so people...the big question is...
Gun to your head, would you rather win the league OR the Grand Final?
Obviously I think we are capable of doin a double
But if it came down to it, what would you choose?

Personally, I don't care if we lose 10 GF's, give me the league ANY DAY of the week!!!!!!! I don't recall Liverpool fans knocking Man Utd of their (slightly) inferior cup record...only Man Utd knocking liverpool
Madrid won the cup last year! And anyone that knows me, would realise I AM a massive Madrid fan and have a hatred of Barca. But truth be told, I would trade the cup for the league in less than a second!!!!
Yes, it is true that this is Australia, and we like finals, but who cares

I was very very pissed off at the commentators Mariners vs Jest, who said that the Jets had one over the Mariners, because they won the championship and we haven't. Not a single mention of our league title. Shit like that ruins their credibility! (which is bad regardless i know)

I am predicting the majority will want a GF, taking into consideration the pain of 3 GF losses.

Discuss!

Yes, that's me - and for that reason only.

I do believe being the best team over the whole season is more important - we've done that (close, but we won it :eek:verhead: and we've been 2, 3 and 4). I just want, once in my life, to experience the "other" feeling at GF final whistle. And I want the boys to too.

In 6 seasons, the top team has taken out the double 4 times. Way to go yet but lets make that 7 :pirashoot:

I would love to win the toilet seat just to shut the haters up, and to watch the Scummers' heads explode when they realise they have nothing but 2008 to fall back on (it's already close enough).

Not even a close GF, I'd love to see us boss the opposition 3 or 4-0 with a clinical display all match like our first half last night. Imagine going into the final 10 minutes of the GF knowing it was all but impossible for the other team to win? Knowing that at that very moment, in trailer parks all across the Hunter, Squadrunts were reacting like this:

I think that lot would be reacting most like the Bitters fans, realising that yet again, their neighbours are consistantly better ;) GVE would be Fergie and Sackwhack could easily be Rat Boy.

......But I'd still much rather win the double as the ultimate F**k you!

. good question kareem ... just the other week i was saying how much i now want to win the gf - seems to matter more once you have lost 3

. but the last couple of days i have also been hoping we can do the double (no reason we can't) ... and continue on to perform well in asia

. and as yellowcake mentioned there are certainly a few of the boys that deserve a gf win

I wouldn't get carried away just yet with winning everything, it's only December! Remember 4 games ago Brisbane were a lay down misere for the Championship and how quickly the mighty have fallen.

Agree the Mariners have improved since last season and may have buried some mental demons after winning tonight but it could have been different with a little bit of luck reversal, 2 crossbar shots with 1 in for the Mariners and 1 out for the Roar, Hutch could of seen red for his reckless studs up challenge ( Refer Roar v Victory game for how easily refs can throw reds out ).

The Roar were missing Broich, Henrique and Smith and it was still a fairly close game. What would happen if the Mariners lost eg: Amini, Ibini and Wilkinson for example at the same time? The team surely would be vulnerable with those losses...

. i don't think anybody is getting carried away ... the boys still need to be getting paid first and foremost. but a realistic question was posed what would we prefer ... and either or both seem reasonale possibilities at the moment - just as they are for brisbane

Winning the league is a far better indicator of who the best team is - but nobody in Australia cares about the league winners, only the grand final winner.

So that's where the glory is - so I'd rather win the grand final.

But there's also the pain of all those grand final losses as well.
