Moved to the bush 2 years ago for work. Most people out here who know about the A-League just want to see good football. They are passionate and are less caught up in the bullshit that can sometimes envelope the coastal areas. They follow either the Jets or the WSW. ...snip

WSW - fair enough. Plenty of bandwaggoners there.

Jets - Clearly country folk are not too discerning!

Fitzy had a decent end of season then seeing him at pluim recently convinced me he's going to have an exciting and impacting season 9. so far from the sounds of the other pre season games he's on track to do just that. exciting when you combine him with the likes of the players you already know are gonna have that kind of season

Could we split our squad into 2 groups? With the addition of youth players?

Does our agreement require us to play "1st team players"...

Also, if we could only choose one match.
Do we choose 75k or the most challenging trial match?
Jets >>> Indonesian opponents
(hurts to type that :p )

Arnie on the game (sbs article):
Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold
expressed delight with his players' performance in the
first match of an eight-team invitational competition
in Indonesia.
The Mariners got their 2013 Menpora Cup campaign
off to the best possible start with a 2-0 victory over
Sriwijaya FC at Stadion Si Jalak Harupat in Bandung,
Java.
“It was very good,” Arnold said. “Why we’re here is to
try and get some good games in and it was a very good
and competitive game.
”If there was one disappointing thing it was the lack of
a killer instinct in front of goal but we made the
chances, and the hardest thing is to make chances.
”Once you start making them eventually the goals will
come.
“We’ve had a good six or seven weeks of hard work on
the training pitch, our structures are coming together,
our work is coming together, and Marcos (Flores) is
starting to see the picture and see the movement off
the ball that we want, so I am very happy with that.”
While pleased with his squad at large, Arnold offered
special praise to new recruit Storm Roux who
dominated his marker down the right.
“I was over the moon with Storm Roux – I thought he
was excellent at right back and is starting to get what
we want and that’s exactly the same as what Josh
Rose gives you on the other side.
”And I thought Marcel Seip showed today that he’s a
real good acquisition.”
Arnold also acknowledged Sriwijaya for its effort.
“You have to commend them because their season is
finished and they’re playing in an end-of-season
tournamen,” he said.
”Their mentality was good and they kept on going.”
Matthew Simon’s 36th minute header combined with
Nick Fitzgerald’s 80th minute strike ensured victory over
the team from Palembang in South Sumatra.
The Mariners' second match is against Malaysia's
under-23 team on Sunday.

Somehow I discovered a link on Mariners Facebook which was showing the game live; unfortunately only found it for the second half. Arnie's comments pretty well sum it up. The performance was very businesslike; it seemed they were using it to build structure and rhythm; the shape was 4-2-3-1. The ball was rolled from side to side with a strong emphasis on keeping possession, almost always on the deck but not much cutting edge. Of the newcomers Seip looked a real presence, tough and good on the ball; Flores was OK but didn't stand out. Sainsbury looked very sharp, reading the play just as he did last year, Rose overlapped constantly, Duke ran about a lot and McGlinchey was his usual busy skilful self. Pasfield was very quick off his line and his highlight, and the highlight of the second half, was a booming headed clearance at the edge of his box that any CB would be proud of. The Indonesian commentators went nuts!
I guess on game day if you look at the relevant Facebook entry the link for the next game will be there.
It was the sweetest feeling to watch the Mariners in action after such a long break; they looked well on schedule.

Completely disagree, we've played two A-League competitors already, and a rematch against Adelaide could ensue in the final or a team that beat Adelaide (assuming we make the final)

Adelaide pulled out of the tournament (they're actually playing WSW tomorrow at Penriff...)

For those of you who didn't watch the "LiveStream" last night.
Central Coast Mariners 2-0 Harimau Muda A: Tigers go down to clinical Mariners
Harimau Muda's chances of making it to the final of the Menpora Cup has also ended after their disappointing defeat to the Australian outfit earlier today Harimau Muda went down by two goals to Australian side Central Coast Mariners in Bandung earlier today. Ong Kim Swee's men wasted several key chances, but the Mariners were ultimately more clinical on the day and emerged as deserved victors.

In fact, the Australian side were the dangerous side from the offset, with them creating 3 golden chances within the first 15 minutes. Initially, Nick Fitzgerald played through a ball for Simon, but Izham Tarmizi was quick off his line to collect the ball. Minutes later, Mitchell Duke darted down the byline before flicking a cross into the box. Fitzgerald made contact with it but his header unfortunately rattled against the bar.

Harimau Muda's first real chance came in the 36th minute through a free kick position, but Saiful Riduwan's attempt was blocked successfuly by the Mariners' defence. Fitzgerald then had another attempt at goal, but the strike was saved brilliantly by Izham. Nonetheless, the Australians finally took the lead 4 minutes before the break as Matt Simon netted his second goal of the tournament. Duke crossed in from the left hand side, and Fitzgerald was there to flick it onto Simon, who made no mistakes by finding the back of the net.

Despite Harimau Muda's best efforts, they deservingly found themselves a goal down at half time.

After the break, the tempo of the match pretty much remained in favour of Central Coast Mariners. Mitchell's strike on the 55th minute was cleared away by Fadhli Shas, before Fitzgerald found the side netting with his provocative shot.

Ong Kim Swee's men were struggling to break the Mariners' defence down, and he decided to even throw Rozaimi Rahman into the mix on the 70th minute mark. But the Australians continued to push forward, with Mitchell Duke yet again having a shot at goal, but Izham was once again equal to it.

Thamil Arasu came closest on the 83rd minute with a powerful strike, although it missed the target by inches. Tom Slater then missed another opportunity as his shot was tipped away to safety by Izham.

However, the Mariners ultimately doubled their lead in the last minute, with Mitchell Duke, who had been so active throughout the game, firing home from close range to give the Australians a comfortable win over their Malaysian counterparts. The victory also means that Harimau Muda's chances of making it to the final of the Menpora Cup has officially ended, although they do have one more group stage match against Sriwijaya next Tuesday.

I watched most of the game. I thought Duke played really good on the wing. His speed is a real asset there and his crosses were great. Ill be really happy if he plays there for the season. WeeMac was good at CAM too. Simon seems to be to be starting to get in good positions to get shots in. Hutch was controlling the centre pretty well but seemed to have plenty of space to work with with not much pressure. Caceares seemed a little quiet this time.

On the negatives I though Reddys distibution was a bit poor at times. I'm starting to think Seip is a dirty player. If he plays like he is at the moment we are going to give away some silly penalties in dangerous areas.

I haven't seen either live stream but for those that have I would love to hear who you thought deserved the Man of the match award or 3,2,1 points for each game.
Any thoughts?

3 points: Duke. Superb speed, set up the first goal, scored the second. Lots of good attacks.
2 points: Fitzgerald, was all over the place in a good way, I thought played real well.
1 point: Morton was nice and visible, I thought he did alright. But the defence had it relatively easy though...

Watched the game via the stream.

3 points to Fitzgerald. he created so many opportunities.
2 points to Dukey. Absolutely tore down the wings and terrorised them to no end.
1 point to Caceras. Very solid.

Caceras will be putting a lot of pressure on Monty for the other DM position this season. He is outstanding. I would actually like to see him play higher up the pitch, maybe as a stand in for Flores. He has the skills IMO.

On Seip, I am yet to be convinced that he is anything to get excited about. Yes he is a no nonsense player but as has been pointed out he may give away a few stupid fouls with some of his tackles. I wonder if Arnie will rotate he and Anderson throughout the season.

Reddy or Pasfield? Neither instill confidence in me. Their distribution and positional play are no where near the standard we had with Maty, nor what we should expect. At one point in the match Reddy was halfway up the pitch thinking he was a midfielder. He seems to flap his arms around a lot and abuse his defenders. I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be a ding dong battle between Pasfield and Reddy for the keepers spot. My gut tells me that it will be Reddy who wins out.

Matt is still the bull at the gate and is going to be a handful again. I for one cant wait to see him back at Bluetongue banging them in.
