Half a championship team could go but the carnival's not over for Central Coast Mariners

BY:RAY GATT From: The Australian May 11, 2013 12:00AM

CENTRAL Coast executive chairman Peter Turnbull is adamant it is not the start of the break-up of the Mariners' championship-winning squad despite the retirement of classy defender Patrick Zwaanswijk.

The 38-year-old Dutchman will play his last home game against Chinese powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande in a first-leg Asian Champions League round of 16 match at Bluetongue Stadium on Wednesday after announcing yesterday he had pulled the curtain on a successful 15-year professional career.

Zwaanswijk scored the opening goal in the Mariners' breakthrough 2-0 A-League grand final victory over Western Sydney last month and said he could not think of a better way to end his career.

Zwaanswijk, however, will not be lost to the club as he has accepted the role of youth and community development and will also be head coach of the club's national league youth team.

It is feared the Mariners could lose as many as five players from the side as doubts surround the future of exciting young trio Matt Ryan, Trent Sainsbury and Bernie Ibini while the national competition's leading goal-scorer, Danny McBreen, has yet to agree to new terms for next season.

And that's on top of a cloud hanging over the future of coach Graham Arnold, who is understood to be considering offers from clubs in Europe and Japan. The Weekend Australian understands Arnold is close to deciding whether to finish the last year of his contract with the Mariners or chase his dream of coaching overseas.

Turnbull, however, remains confident the Mariners will not be torn apart next season.

"Is this the beginning of the end? No way," a defiant Turnbull said yesterday. "On the playing side, we are losing Patrick, though he will still have a huge role to play here.

"As for the others, I am confident Trent Sainsbury will stay and Bernie is still contracted to us for another season.

"As everyone knows, Matt's contract is finished and he is being chased by a number of overseas clubs. We are just waiting to see what develops there."

Sainsbury, who won the Mariners Medal as the club's best player this season and took part in a Socceroos A-League based train-on squad this week, has attracted interest from overseas clubs including Bolton and Fulham.

But it appears likely he will go to Swiss club FC Basel.

Zwaanswijk, who played more than 350 games in Holland with clubs such as FC Utrecht and NAC Breda, joined the Mariners in 2010. He not only quickly established himself as one of the best defenders but as one of the best foreigners to play in the A-League. He has played 87 times for the club, scoring 11 goals.

"The time is right," the Dutchman said. "I need to look beyond football. I have had a great career and could not ask for a better finish than to help the Mariners win the title.

"I want to give something back to the game and to the Mariners so I am excited by my new role. As well, my family loves it here (on the central coast)."

"In three or four years Patrick will be head coach of the Central Coast Mariners," current coach Graham Arnold said yesterday.

"He's been an unbelievable player, has raised the professionalism in our dressing room and boasts a wonderful football brain . . . it was very important he wasn't lost to this club."

Asked where negotiations were at with striker Daniel McBreen, Arnold added with a laugh: "Macca's might just be the longest negotiation in the history of world football, if not world sport. We're getting closer and closer, that's all I can say. I know there's only another two-and-a-half weeks until he doesn't get paid again so I'm sure the contract will be finished by then."

Zwaanswijk, meanwhile, will play his last home match against Guangzhou Evergrande next Wednesday.

"This is the hardest decision I've ever had to make in my life," he said. "It's one you never want to make but, on the other hand, you don't want to stay too long either.

"After a year of talking to Arnie, looking at opportunities for life after football, I'm really grateful that the Mariners believe in me and give me the trust they have for the job ahead.

"I want to make the Mariners one of the biggest football clubs in Australia."

Told he was now considered a Mariners legend, he laughed: "At 38 I might be a legend according to my age . . . but the way I play, everyone can learn that."

As for replacing Zwaanswijk, Arnold said: "With Zach Anderson and Brent Griffiths, they've come on a lot this year so we'll try and fix the problem from within where we can."

Every season we have to read this "their stars will leave, it's all over bullshit"

They realise that's our business model right?

Morton, Neil, Caceres are probably close to stepping up.

Just like every season.

Also, rumours starting to circulate on Twitter that Arnie has signed for 2 more years. Not a great source usually but tends to link with the "in 3 or 4 years" mention from the great man.

I stress, it's not a great source but every announcement the club make is ALWAYS leaked via Twitter in advance.

I love this time of year! Will he go, will he stay? Is he going to re-sign or resign? Will he come back? We have signed who? We haven't signed who? Who was seen at training, who was at Soccer5s? Who was talking to Arnie at Bunnings? Even Ray Gatt is recycling old information. The drip feeding of information from the club , the little snippets of gold from the mischievous Arnie - Priceless :innocent:

As a concept, Dutchy, to be head coach in 3-4 years is about the most comforting news I could imagine for us.

As to the loss of some big players, it really would have been a very bad time to lose GA. But I have no fears if Arnie's in charge when we are recruiting through this period now. Only excitement really like Roy expressed. There may have been the odd blip like Musialik, but even before Hearfield's unfortunate ban, I thought he looked like a new player under GA - Clarky and co.

Sainsbury has been outstanding for us. As has Matty ryan. But like others, it feels like we can ably replace them and I'm excited by watching them move onto new heights.
The player I would most fear losing is Weemac. Which i'm sure I'm not alone in. And while he has some shockers, I think Pedj also is immense for us and would be very hard shoes to fill. To me we just don't look like the same team when either of those players are not on the park. I also think Bernie's daring, speed and X factor needs to be replaced like for like if he should go.

Player who I think will also likely prove one to really watch next year (aside form Duke and hopefully Caceres.) is Fitzy. The extra time in the squad under Arnie and playing his systems, may well see him go to a whole new level I think. Lacked a bit of composure at times this season, but his spirit/attitude and ability were also very apparent I thought.

Congratulations to Dutchy for his recent appointment ( I did predict it a long time ago).
I`m not so sure however, that Wednesday will be his last home appearance..
We have the ability & the hunger to beat the Chinese & i`m sure Arnie will be have long talks with Griffiths about how they play & their weaknesses.

FP - I agree with you re Fitzgerald. McGlinchey is a far more complete player than he was 4 years ago and there is the potential for Fitz to follow the same path. He has two good feet and is very quick, beats players easily, has an eye for a pass, and works hard - and seems to love being back at the Mariners. At the moment he is an impact player but with the quality of coaching at the Mariners he can only get better.
(See, those yellow and blue glasses are working well :))

Speaking of players that have ability and potential to improve, does anyone know whether Brad McDonald is staying with us next year? (The answer is probably somewhere in this thread, but I can't find it).

‘Goal machine’ McBreen remains a Mariner

2013/13 Hyundai A-League Golden Boot winner Daniel McBreen will remain with Central Coast Mariners next term after today signing a one-season contract extension with the Club.
McBreen scored 19 goals in season eight of the Hyundai A-League, including two in two matches throughout the Club’s 2013 Championship winning Finals Series campaign.
Speaking following the team’s penultimate training session ahead of Wednesday evening’s AFC Champions League Round of 16 first-leg fixture against China’s Guangzhou Evergrande in Gosford, McBreen said that he is pleased to have inked his extension with the yellow and navy.
“I’ve stated many times that I wanted to be here and we had plenty of discussions about it,” McBreen said. “I’m just glad to get it all sorted out and to be here for another year.”
“There was a lot of talk about Clubs overseas and other A-League teams, but nothing really materialised that I was happy with. And I said it time and time again that I was so happy here.”
McBreen’s retention for the Mariners adds to a core of current first team players that will remain on contract with the Club next campaign.
The 36-year-old marksman believes the continuity of the Club’s playing roster will ensure the men from the 20,059-capacity Bluetongue Stadium are in a sound position to record yet another successful season in Australia’s top flight.
“You don’t want to win the league and then everyone disappear and then fall away the next season,” he said. “We’ve got aspirations to defend the Championship, and we’ll have a few other goals that we want to get as well, so we’ll be working hard to be as strong as ever (next season).”
“We’ve kept a core here and when you play together for a long time you know each other’s game inside out which obviously helps you out on the pitch. Off the pitch we have a such a good bond so it’s really good to see people committing to the Club.”
“We’re not going to take the foot off the pedal, we’re going to keep going and working hard,” he said.
McBreen said that he’d be looking to back up his stellar performances in season eight of the Hyundai A-League next campaign in a bid to earn another deal with the Club.
“He (Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold) said at my age it’s a year-by-year basis, so I’ll just go out there and try and do the same next year and get another contract,” he said.
“But age is just a number – if you’re doing the goods why shouldn’t you keep playing?”
Central Coast Mariners Chairman and Group General Manager, Mr Peter Turnbull, said: “It is a real delight to announce the re-signing of Daniel McBreen to the Club for the defence of our Championship next season.”
“Daniel’s performances this season have been a revelation. He was Golden Boot winner of course, but really his overall leadership on the field as well as off it has made Daniel an integral part of the Mariners’ success.”

rumour quite a while back that he was going to another Sydney club but no further word since - he has hardly played in the first team in 3 seasons so will he get the chance to play if we keep him?

Great stuff. Having watched the Grand Final video I realised just how much work Danny puts in apart from scoring. After the full 90 minutes, there he was, with a clearing kick in the penalty area just before the final whistle.

Again it will be fun seeing him be a serial pest against the Jets!

If he was 1/2 as good as he seems to think he is, he would be playing for Barcelona.

Sydney fans have the most apt name for him.

The C

Sums him up
