Brilliant!Central Coast Mariners look to the East for mystery signing in bid to boost title defence
January 31, 2014
Central Coast Mariners are aiming to bolster their title defence by making up to three signings within a week, beginning with an Asian attacking midfielder who could arrive in the coming days.
The identity of the foreign playmaker remains unknown, but the club is in advanced talks with the player and hope to finalise a deal at the weekend as a replacement for the injured Marcos Flores. The Mariners' transfer target is understood to have played in one of the best leagues in the continent, and will likely be the first of a number of signings made by the club before the close of the summer transfer window on Wednesday.
Mariners coach Phil Moss would not reveal the identity of the players targeted.
''The negotiations are at a delicate stage but certainly if we get who I'm looking at, I'll be extremely happy,'' he said.
''Certainly a couple of them, and I'm looking in Asia for one particular player who has played at a good level over there. I'm really hopeful that we'll be able to announce a couple of signings next week, if not this weekend. Obviously the transfer deadline is coming up fast on Wednesday but there's a lot of movement going around behind the scenes.''
The Mariners are looking to sign another winger after Mike McGlinchey moved to Japanese club Vegalta Sendai on loan, as well as another defender to strengthen their squad before the congested end of the season.
Dutch defender Marcel Seip has been rumoured to be on the outer at the Mariners after failing to impress since arriving in the off-season. However, Moss has denied the 31-year-old has been told to look elsewhere.
The Mariners coach confirmed that Seip did seek clarity regarding his future at the club but said he had not fallen out of favour despite sliding behind Trent Sainsbury and Zach Anderson in the pecking order in defence.
''He came to me and asked where he sits in the scheme of things, and I've said that as far as I'm concerned, he's like any other player in the squad fighting for a spot. He's a foreigner and needs to be performing at the best of his abilities to get a spot.
''We've had Trent Sainsbury and Zach Anderson, and in the last four games they've conceded one goal between them. They've grabbed their opportunities with us, and it's hard for him to work his way in.''
The Mariners face league leaders Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday in the match of the round. Moss hinted that rising star Anthony Caceres would likely retain his place in the starting line-up in place of captain John Hutchinson. Caceres, 21, had a starring role in the Mariners F3 derby victory last week, netting a stunning long-range strike, and could likely start again against the Roar.
''Certainly he's given me no reason not to stick with him this week but every player in a Mariners shirt pushes each other every day in training,'' Moss said.

Daniel McBreen may pull out of Roar match after Mariners block move to Shanghai
The Central Coast Mariners have infuriated star striker Daniel McBreen by refusing to allow him to join a Chinese Super League club Shanghai East Asia during the January transfer period.
To deter interest, the Mariners have slapped a $250,000 transfer fee on the player's head, despite the striker having just four months left on his contract.
Fairfax Media understands the 36-year old is so angry with the club he is contemplating withdrawing from the match on Sunday against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.
He remains on a relatively paltry contract and is aware his next professional deal might be his last. After his departure was blocked, McBreen asked the club for a contract extension, only to be declined again.
While the striker has seemingly improved with age, having spent most of his career as a lower-league journeyman, he has hardly made a huge living from the game. He turned professional only at 23.
McBreen showed his deft touch around goals last weekend, scoring a superb left-footed goal against Newcastle in a 3-0 triumph.
"Daniel has been a loyal servant to the Mariners since the day he joined and I don't think anyone could say he hasn't given the club tremendous service," his agent, James Hardy, said. "However, as we all know, Daniel is coming to the twilight years of his professional career. This might be his last opportunity to continue to earn a living from the game.
"All he's asking for is for the club to act in good faith by granting him a release. They already have some great strikers in the form of Mitchell Duke, Matt Simon, Bernie Ibini and Mile Sterjovski."
McBreen's stunning form in the A-League last season - he bagged 19 goals in a championship-winning campaign and claimed the golden boot - earned him a three-month loan deal with Shanghai East Asia.
He continued his good form in China, scoring three goals in his 13-game stint in that nation's biggest city. McBreen has scored two goals for the Mariners since returning to the A-League, playing predominantly as an attacking midfielder.
"Daniel has been in China earlier this season and made a great impression there, so the interest is no surprise," Hardy said.
"Ideally, it would be great for the club to offer Daniel a farewell game this weekend and then allow him an opportunity to pursue what he feels might be the last opportunity of his career."
The Mariners refused to budge on their stance when contacted on Thursday night.
‘‘Through Daniel McBreen’s representatives, we can confirm lucrative personal terms have been offered to the player by a Chinese club,’’ a club statement said.
‘‘However at this time the Chinese club interested in signing Daniel has made no transfer offer to the Mariners, nor have they signalled any intent to do so, despite us outlining clear terms for his transfer.’’
The club made it clear that if they were to part company with McBreen, they’d need to be fairly remunerated.
‘‘Put simply, we are not in the business of letting our players walk out on their contractual commitment to the club - and most importantly our fans - for free,’’ it said.
‘‘Unless the Chinese club in question puts a serious offer on the table, Daniel McBreen will remain a Central Coast Mariners player and be expected to fulfill his responsibilities to the club and the fans until the completion of his current deal.’’
HTFU Macca, and play out the rest of the season like you're being paid to. Until there's a signed clearance, you're a Mariner and we expect you to play like one.

Not sure what to believe with this, but Macca is still a Mariner and the club has every right to ask for a transfer fee. There is nothing for the club to gain by just handing him over, as it stands we won't be able to name a full bench before long if he goes! At the moment he is pivotal to the team with no natural #10. If we can sign 3 or 4 players in the next week then i think he should be granted his wish tho still think we should get something for him.
