I hope we can have a look at Doig this Friday. Anyone know if he is playing/bench or out injured?

I am looking forward to seeing Porter move to midfield or the bench.

Doig is still struggling

Might be winnable for CCM on current form. Vidmar will find another way to baffle us all with his "tactics", with the exception that the Mariners have firepower to punish them for it.

I don't think i have ever heard the mariners being described as having firepower.

Just read on 442 that Owasu will most likely be out with a neck injury. Good news for us he has looked dangerous for them so far this season?

Yeah agree. Even 50 50 starting will affect his physical game play. The reds seem to have freak games where everything gels, as long as its not one of those... I think we will win by 2.

Freak prediction.
Mrdja to score a double and force me to revise my opinion of him this season.

Ummm... Simon?

Come on, get serious. He is not what you would call fire power. When is the last time you have seen Matty line up a drive at goal, let go and score?

Don't get me wrong i love the guy and wouldn't swap him for another, but he is not your typical forward.

Why is that? I don't think I have ever seen Matty launch one, laces up from outside the box.

Yeh but he is a hero from 6-yards ;)

Matty's a poacher. He's bloody good at it. It's very different to the Mile/Disco Nik/Hutch* model of setting radar to lock on the top corner and firing from miles away. I don't particularly care either way, they all count.

Actually, I think I get a special kind of joy out of goals like the DMac/Simon effort on Saturday - to be rewarded for chasing the lost cause is great. Simon scored half a dozen goals like that last year, mostly off his own bat. This time DMac did the running for it. Giving opposing defences the nasty nagging feeling that they're never quite safe and that the forward's never quite given up is the most delightful torture. It means we see less quality balls coming away from opposing defences as well, meaning our midfield and defence are under less pressure.

* Come on, you all remember the 3-2 loss in Sydney in Aloisi's first game where he absolutely pounded two home, one off each foot.

Statistics say the same, we are equal bottom with Pissant in goals scored so far with 5. Fortunately we are equal first with GC in goals conceded (3) and third on goal difference behind GC & Bling (+2).

And how many goals did we score last season with the same strike force?

statistics say a lot of things. here are some more stats.

we're 5 weeks into a 27 week season. there's a long way to go.

looking at past four (21 week) seasons, i've listed our goals scored, our ranking on goals scored and who the top scoring team was that year (and how many goals they scored):

05/6 - 35 goals, 1st, = sydney (35)
06/7 - 22 goals, 7th, melbourne (41)
07/8 - 30 goals, 2nd, adelaide (31)
08/9 - 35 goals, 3rd, melbourne (39)

so we've been in the top three in goalscoring every season bar one. we've jointly led the scoring and been second by one goal.

on the all time season table we're 4th with 127 goals, behind melbourne (141) and running closeely behind adelaide (132) and sydney (131).

those exciting, attacking newcastle jets are well behind on 111.

but we don't score any goals...

Do I ever!! Two stunning strikes like that, with left and right, you would think he was a European International.

define firepower then.

in DV's context above, he's clearly talking about ability to find the back of the net. his comment is meaningless otherwise - there's nothing you can 'punish' a team with if it's not scoring a goal.

Yep, I was quantifying it as being able to score goals on a regular basis. That's the broadest definition of it!

Seriously, I'm interested in how this goes. United have a strong home record (and, for that matter, one of the most stable home crowd bases in the league- very few wild fluctuations) but are clearly low on morale and confidence at this moment based on their games so far. Their football this season has been pretty awful, and their only good signing for this season so far has been Owusu (though Shin has shown some decent touches, he isn't the finished article). If there's a chance of getting a good result there, this is it.

Let's not forget two of last season's games between CCM and AU- the 3-3 draw at Hindmarsh and the 3-0 win in the rescheduled round 11 game featuring a fine strike from Caceres.

depending on heff and doig and other injuries i haven't heard about it will go like this:

danny
boogs - doig - wilko - heff
porter - pedj - travis - hutch
nik - matty

That is a more solid line up. Though personally would prefer dmac to mrdja
The impression I've had of Dmac when he starts is that he's holding back a bit to make sure he can go the 90. Last match when he came on he seemed a lot more vigorous because he knew he only had 20 or so to do his job.
I was also happy with the way Nik worked from the start, so my preference would be to start Nik (thus helping to build his match fitness) and sub him with Dmac in the 2nd dig.

I'm with you Spike. Nik is not going to get any match fitness without game time. I think when he comes on late he tries to go for the Hollywood shot.

We have a keeper that has refound his form and confidence, defence that is looking much more solid, more options in midfield, a poacher with Matty, a target man in Dyl. If Nik and Ahmed can get some fitness and find some form that could be the icing on the cake for a big year.

I'm particularly liking this thread this week. Good discussion and debate.
Not just my squad and predictions (which I still also like)
