We were far more direct than under Okon and had a lot more penetration. That possession stat is inflated because Perth couldn’t keep the ball under our press for significant parts of the game. Not because we just kept possession at all costs knocking it back.

Fact is our forwards are not gelling and are not in form. Deej was right about Torres, great turn of speed and good on the ball, but presently can’t pick out a man and makes poor decisions.

Dingo and Beni were both patient and could pick a pass as well as score. Silvera was a great technical finisher. All things our current forward line is missing.

Hate to say it, but this league is always tight, meaning small margins make or break teams. And so far doesn’t look like we can overcome the disruption, which only gets harder when you’re losing. Look at Victory last season.

And it’s not Monty’s fault. He had an opportunity that could be once in a lifetime and had to take it.

And that’s also not Jackson’s fault. Or MC or Peil’s.
It sucks. But it’s just what it is.

Problem with Jackson now is imo you can’t fairly discern yet whether he’s actually getting most things right but the short term ask is simply too much in a tight league.

Central Coast coach Mark Jackson has put his strikers on notice, saying he may need to bring in some new recruits if they don't start pulling their weight.
The Mariners' 2-0 loss to Perth Glory on Saturday night marked Central Coast's third straight defeat to start the season.

Not since Brisbane started the 2014-15 campaign with four straight losses has a team opened their title defence in such poor fashion.

The Mariners have scored just one goal across the opening three rounds.
It's in stark contrast to their 6-1 romp over Melbourne City in last season's grand final.
The departure to India of star striker Jason Cummings, who scored 20 goals last season, has left a huge hole in the Mariners' set-up.
Samuel Silvera, who scored eight goals last season, has since joined English club Middlesbrough, while forward Beni Nkololo (eight goals) went to Saudi Arabia.
Central defender Brian Kaltak is the only Mariners player to have scored a goal so far this season.

Striker Dylan Wenzel-Halls was taken off at half-time against Glory after failing to make a big impact, while substitute Alou Kuol looked good in patches but wasn't overly threatening.
"I'm trying to figure out who's going to come in and score goals, because no one's stepping up at the minute," Jackson said.
"Alou came on and we asked him to put yourself about in the second half. I thought he did that better.
"But I'm still waiting to see somebody step up and want to take that Jason Cummings mantle and go and score some goals, and we've got to see that quickly.
"And if not, we have to look to to get that into the team somehow."

Jackson was brutally honest when asked whether the answer to the team's goalscoring woes could be solved with the current players at his disposal.
"Sitting in front of you now my answer to that is no, because we are not scoring goals and we're not looking a threat from that nine position," he said.
"Like I said, I always believe in players within the squat. I have full belief in them. I'm sure they're trying.
"But we need players to step up. I challenge every forward player in the squad - they should want to be the next one to come up and take that No.9 position.
"I've got to be honest, we're not seeing it at the minute."
If the Mariners' woes continue, it could open the door for some significant signings during the next transfer window.

Central Coast will be back in action next Sunday when they host Brisbane.
The Mariners will be without Colombian winger Angel Torres after he was red carded in the 2-0 loss to Perth for slapping an opponent on the back of the head.

Just read this. All my posts were written prior, heartily agree with this. And glad he’s staying as positive as possible but being very honest at the same time.

The 36 goals of our lost forwards do not look to have been ably replaced by Monty’s signings.

I was guilty of thinking Alou would be a force. But Mick was right. He’s not Cummings. And Torres isn’t Sammy (yet at least).

Again we were the better side. Max and Nizzy were superb. Farrell was good. Theo is a vast improvement over Wilson. That CB pairing is not good enough.
Doka looked ropey as hell so at this stage Roux is the better option. Torres was having a stinker and then the send off.
The Jackson hate is misplaced. I always vouched for Ben Cahn but i'm not sure what either can do with some of these new signings.

Cows first goal & Perth first goal came off a high press with a lost ball, and sometimes in set play like a corner.

If you press high, all players must react the instant the ball is lost and pour back in defensive.

Often we are caught out.

As with the Cows game we were the better side for large parts of the game.

WE seem to be unable to set up our strikers with clear chances.

I remember when Ange tried to play Ange Ball with an Australia side incapable of learning the systems in a week to prepare for a game.

Just maybe we not longer have the players capable in fitness, and speed to play a high press, further capable of creating scoring chances, in high speed situations.

This counter attacking game today looks to suit them well. If they play the way we did with a high press the wanderers would be killing them but they’re staying disciplined and using speed up top

Haha. Yeah it was in terms of so much ball and no end product. But crucially it wasn’t about how we were set up or our philosophy, it’s just how poorly our forwards played.

We can blame Jackson, but DWH surely has to own that performance and Torres has been seeing plenty of ball in good areas that you have to expect your players to do more with. Tulio was sloppy also. Looked tired. What do you do?

Max and niz bossed the mids and gave our attack a stranglehold in which you have to win that game. But they failed to capitalise.

If our territory was poor and we were losing the mids or being constantly over run at the back I’d be on Jackson.

Right now,, I think he’s right, forwards either need to step up or we need better. And youth at the back means inconsistency and errors. Though Faz was excellent I thought.

Good way to lose the sheds. I was always of the opinion you protect your guys in public and blast them in the sheds.

I'll play. For context, I also just watched MJ post game presser.
He sounds pissed with our strikers. True but is he setting them up to fail with how we play? What are our strikers strengths? Pace (DWH lack of last night an exception?) and running into space. Does MJs tactics play into these strengths. No. What do our current wide players do (Theo and Torres)? They hold onto the ball way too long and cut in. He even mentioned this was talked about with Theo in the presser after last game. Neither can get to the by-line or put in regular decent crosses or early passes for our strikers to run on to. Doka is supposed to be a set piece specialist and his delivery is equally as bad (he was absolutely horrible last night). Tulio, while a good player when fit (doesn't look it at all this season) holds the ball up as well. That is the majority of our attacking players not linking with our strikers well. Faz and Storm put in decent balls (Di P for me looks like another hold onto the ball too long but hope I'm wrong). So you'd want storm and Faz to have the ability to be higher up the pitch with people covering.
Wilson was a non factor last night. Blind Freddie could see he was the worst player on the pitch for our opening few games (cup, Asia, Ade) and MJ could have subsided and protected his young player by benching him earlier, dropping him or playing him in another role (where our biggest strengths are unfortunately for WW).
Kaltek plays brilliantly but still has his lapses. I think he was at fault for both opening goals the last 2 games (which means playing form behind). I'd still play him. Windust I'm a fan of but he was even behind Hall in MJs (and Monty's) rankings despite playing when when called upon. It looks like MJ is trying to get Nizzy to be a regular goal threat (which we all hope he can turn into)- think penalty win in Asia, non-penalty last week, goal in Asia, and a lovely but of skill to be out muscled/lose his footing last night. Is he playing too high creating even less space? Most of these decisions are purely for MJ to decide. How to play to your strikers strengths is also for him to decide. I hope he can actually try something different as he does not seem to select benches to impact games effectively. When plan A fails (no early goals) then what? Love to hear people's thoughts.

I'm of the same opinions.

I also don't like a coach publicly criticizing individual players, bad for morale. Especially after they've said the dressing room is a safe space etc.

DWH looks demoralized. There were balls last night that he could have got to, looked like he couldn't be arsed. Some players respond to that level of criticism and it spurs them on to try harder, some will have their confidence dented, resent you and not want to play for you.

As for Alou, he was having a tough time overseas, came back to the safety of the bosom of the club he loves, to sign and play for Monty and Serge, ends up with this....

Neither of them got a lot of game time last season. I suspect they need help to develop and regain their confidence rather than public shaming.

So my thoughts. Played heaps better than the first 2 rounds. Again had the chances, couldn't hit the mark.

Think Tulio is trying to do too much or being asked to do too much. Its blunting his creativity.

DWH was played out of style. Asked to lead the line but is a secondary striker. Reckon slot him into Torres spot. See what happens. Noticed Paull was obviously tasked to blast balls low and flat between the lines to try and get to him.

Torres defs cut in and shot less. Good. But also needed to do more with the possession.

Theo. Sooooo left footed Hoole yet? Hes just so fkn selfish. Cut the step over shit. Get the ball toward the byline inside the box and cross it. Or shoot.

Niz and Max were sublime. Wasn't a fan of Max dinking little balls over the too to Tulio.

Faz and Roux were good. Seem to be playing like inverted wingbacks rather than standard wingbacks. We lose the overlap which has been very profitable

Paull and Brian. Solid enough. Got caught out too far up the pitch a few times and got caught for 2. Paull obviously asked to hit low flat balls forward. Wasn't effective. Brian doing Brian things.

Danny. Seems really stiff and not keen on sweeping. Not keeping well.

Tactically we are kind of a muddle. It doesn't suit and isn't consistent. The high press is the same issue we had last year, we just can't score more than you. Do we have a plan for attacking? Because we had chances to counter and went backwards. We have the ball in the final third and get stuck with 8 men well inside their half and no shot on target. We're too narrow. There's not a lot of movement off the ball to move defenders around.

On a side note, did we lose the ball doing any drag back heel flick things? I dont think so.

Painfully getting better each week so far. And as I've said earlier I'll give MJ 10-13 rounds.
