Mariners release Patricio Perez

The Central Coast Mariners have today agreed to release playmaker Patricio Perez from the final year of his contract on compassionate grounds, allowing him to return to his home country of Argentina with his family.

“I am sad that it has finished this way,” said Perez, through interpreter and Mariners goalkeeping coach John Crawley.

“The players and the club have been fantastic to me and my wife and I love the Central Coast, but it is hard for us to be away from our families. I want to thank the club and Graham Arnold for the way we have been treated during our time here, and I will be watching Mariners results very closely in the future.

“To the Mariners fans, thankyou for your support, it has been a pleasure to play at Bluetongue Stadium, the fans are fantastic and I will miss everyone on the Central Coast, but it is time now for me and my wife to return to Argentina,” said Perez.

Despite battling back and hamstring problems for much of his time on the Central Coast, Perez still managed six goals in his 18 appearances for the club, and lit up the Hyundai A-League on several occasions with his exciting ball skills through the middle of the park.

The Argentine Under 20’s World Cup winner will return home with his wife immediately, and the club thanks him for his contribution to the Yellow and Navy, and wishes him all the best for the future.

“I’m obviously very disappointed, we were looking forward to having Patricio around for two seasons because he’s been fantastic for us, but it is hard for some players to settle in a foreign place, particularly when there are language barriers and homesickness involved,” said Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold.

“South American people are typically very emotional and Patricio and his wife have found it hard being away from their families. Compassionately we had to do the right thing and allow Patricio and his wife to be with them, and we have no complaints with that.

“He has certainly made a mark on the A-League and I’m sure people would agree he is a tremendous talent, but when a player isn’t comfortable we have to do what is in the best interests of both the player and the rest of the squad and the club, which we have done.

“He’s a great kid, and I hope he does well in the future.”

Good or bad?

Can't wait for musty to start playing more will be good to see his development in the coming season (EDIT if he stays). We will need more cover in the attacking mid role now. Hutcho just doesnt cut it.

That really sucks. Having said that, he really didn't want to be here and it showed. Better to cut him loose now than have him hang around getting 'injured' all the time and only playing a few games. We needed him in the grand final! I just hope we can get someone of equal or better quality to replace him.

wow what a shock. Not a totally bad thing he is very injury prone. When he was playing he had some great games but was he really worth the money. Please dont get me wrong i loved the guy but one door closes another one opens. Hope we keep Musty. I have faith in Arnie he wont let us down. Good luck Perez in the future.

what a shame, I hope Amini stays and tries to perform in the void left by Perez, it'd be great for the youngster :)

we have lost a great talent but if he is home sick he better go back home, im sure GA will find us another No 10 with the same ability... We still have Musti 4tm :)

Excellent news. Very talented player but with the heart the size of a pea who went missing in action whenever there was any pressure on. Opens a spot to sign a player that has heart and guts as well as technical ability

Terrible news.

Perez was a class above. I was really looking foward to his second season.

The good news is Amini is hugely talented and can fill the void, he just needs to learn to play for 90 mins.

Hutch is a defensive middie so has no relevence really and Rostyn is superior in that position.

Sad, because he obviously can play a bit, but Amini is a better player *for us*. Amini is quicker to move the ball on and is simply more effective.

Other thoughts: Frees up some coin. Won't affect Hutch - different position. Opens the way for another kid to come through.

Que sera sera.

Can't say I'm that surprised.

I'm in two minds. He was certainly a great player to watch when he played and played well. But it was very intermittent.

Sorry to see him go, as he seemed a really nice lad, but hoping Arnie and his contacts can fill the gap with a fit player of equal or better skills.

I doubt it will be Musti, as I think he will be snapped up by an overseas Club very quickly.

Real shame because the back end of the season showed what he is capable of doing. I really enjoyed watching a Mariners player have the ability to waltz through a defense, like his goal in Adelaide.

I hope Arnie goes to South America again because that style of player is very valuable in developing Musti. No other Mariners player has the same vision or killer pass.

Thanks Perez for the highlights, it didn't work out as well as we all hoped but you proved crucial in many games. Good luck.

If musti is not sold during this "training expo" he should have his contract extended for an extra 2 yrs. He then plays a comp in July . season with us, ACL, olympics and then sold next year for mega brass with 2 yrs still on contract(that's what will make him really valuable.)

Crap.

I'm devastated. He was just a cut above and If he could have settled would have torn the place up in his second year.

We will need a replacement for him. Doesn't need to be a starter cause we have Musti but unless Musti really works on his fitness over the off season he will not be a 90 min player and we do not have any cover for him now.

After saying that though we have now lost our set piece taker and the only player in the squad with a reliable quality strike and we will need to replace that.

Arnie's winter just got a whole lot busier.

I think there is alot of truth in this. Amini will be a better player next season due to what he is about to go through. The comparison between the 2 next year would have been interesting to see.

As for another youngster coming through do we have any ideas on who? Within the youth team or outside of it, who are the promising candidates?
