Hang on, where did this "reacting to sledging" talk come from?

The opening post makes it sound like the player just lashed out at his "supporters", completely unprovoked:

.... I witnessed a CC Mariners player getting out of his Black Subaru and projecting verbal abuse at a group of Mariners fans stationed on a nearby balcony. 

These fans were chanting "mariners fc (clap clap clap) mariners fc".  To my disgust, this player got out of his car and proceeded to yell back, "come down, if you think you're hard enough".  ....

Was "mariners fc (clap clap clap) mariners fc" sung in a sarcastic tone? Or was there more to this exchange that was omitted from the opening post?
