GIVEN recent events in the NRL, last night's dramas should come as no surprise. Both the Friday night matches finished in controversy, but the scenes at Campbelltown Stadium were the most heinous as referee Jared Maxwell was tackled by a disgruntled fan after full-time in the Brisbane-Wests Tigers match.

Police arrested the fan immediately and he was expected to be charged last night. The NRL has also foreshadowed a life ban. Maxwell was waiting for his fellow referee Ben Cummins and the touch judges when he was tackled from behind by the intruder.

Security immediately pulled him off the referee and he was escorted from the ground by police.

"I got tackled to the ground by someone who jumped the fence," Maxwell said. "In 15 years of refereeing I have never had that. Fortunately it did no damage to me."

Maxwell said he would like to see the offender banned for life, a punishment also endorsed by Tigers board member David Trodden.

"It's completely unacceptable," Trodden said. "Whatever action the police and NRL want to take against the bloke we will whole-heartedly support. It's disgraceful."

There were allegations the offender entered the playing arena 20 seconds before full-time, but raced back off the field when he realised the game was still going. He then allegedly waited by the fence before going back on to tackle Maxwell.

"Obviously whenever fans invade the pitch there's potentially going to be an issue and in this case the person has tackled the referee," NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley.

"He will be charged by police and in all likelihood the NRL will impose a life ban."

'Spank me' tape shame for Cronulla Sharks CEO Tony Zappia

EMBATTLED Cronulla chief executive Tony Zappia has been forced from the club today after a secretly taped conversation with a former employee he struck surfaced.

In the tape, which Mr Zappia claims is a "set up", he allegedly offers to let Jenny Hall "spank" him and showed her a pornographic email. He is also heard denying Ms Hall sick leave after he claims he accidentally punched her in the face.

"A set up, you wouldn't know how and when the quotes (by the woman) were edited," Mr Zappia said last night after the tape was aired on Channel 7. Asked if he would stand down Mr Zappia said last night: "I have not thought about it. I would need to get some legal advice.

"The board hasn't met yet I don't know the context (of the spanking term) I don't remember saying it and who knows whether it was a cut and paste recording."

The Daily Telegraph understands the new faction on Cronulla's board wanted Mr Zappia out of the club immediately.


The NRL last night urged Cronulla's board to review its position in light of the "new and damaging information", which they were not previously aware of.

"If the tape is a faithful recording, it would be difficult to see how the club could not take the strongest action possible," NRL chief David Gallop said last night.

During the conversation taped by Ms Hall and obtained by Channel 7, Mr Zappia laughs at Ms Hall's injury saying "it's not that bad" before accusing her of being "on the drink".

When he asks her if she admits it was accidental, she replies: "Well, I just don't know how you could have accidentally hit me this hard. Look at my eye."

When Ms Hall said she was annoyed with the treatment she received and the way Mr Zappia handled the situation, Mr Zappia allegedly said to Ms Hall: "Do you want to spank me?".

He then refused to allow her to take sick leave and is alleged to have shown her and another employee a pornographic email.

Police are reportedly set to lay charges against the Cronulla Sharks mystery benefactor, who donated $30,000 to the club through embattled chief executive Tony Zappia.

News Limited reports the 27-year-old is set to be taken into custody in Sydney, where it's believed he was meeting with Channel Seven.

Police detectives will allege the money Elford donated to the club was obtained through forged documents he used to claim health insurance.

The National Rugby League and Sharks football club board are currently trawling through financial records, following a Seven report that revealed the existence of a secret fund created by donations from Clint Elford, a Sharks fan who claims he is terminally ill.

Board members and club officials have denied any knowledge of the fund, Beyond Sharks Foundation, but Zappia claims all his dealings ware all above board.

Eight police arrived at Mr Elford's Goulburn home today intending to lay charges, and were seen removing Sharks memorabilia from his home.

Elford claims to be suffering from Shy Drager's Syndrome - a neurological disease, but suspicions are growing that he is not terminally ill after all.

Elford, who made Zappia the sole executor of his $13.8 million estate, is reportedly known to police
