No chance of silverware till we learn how to defend

Ted,

Watch the replay tomorrow and see if Porter could have/should have done better on just about every goal.

Imagine he's a Youth player and you are trying to explain to him about what he could do better.

He has had a solid season but there are BIG problems with his game defensively and that is a worry when he's your RB.

Our defense is woeful, absolutely woeful. The fact we have hovered in the top four this season has masked that to an extent despite the high amount of goals conceeded this season. If we're to have any impact in the finals, we have to improve. Simple as that.

Thankfully our ACL draw is favourable to an extent ...

Lawrie seems to think our defence was terrible last night too.

From the SMH:

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna rued his side's defensive frailties, but said he is still confident they can book a finals spot.

"You can't give away at least three of the goals we did," McKinna said.

"I gave the boys credit last week saying they have been outstanding for the last five weeks ... but tonight we never defended as a team and a few decisions went wrong so defensively I am not happy."

Agree with Lawrie but not sure of the Porter bashing by some. We were solid on that side all night - please have a look at the replays today guys as I already watched it on IQ and he was Solid - not GREAT but Solid, Pedj and Wilko were under so much pressure due to no Jedi and Heff being schooled..... Fact is Pedj and Wilko whilst not brilliant were not Sh1te..... Imaging Boogs there instead of Pedj.....

Qld too mobile and fast and we can start preparing for AFC as even if we finish 4th (I I would not put money on that) QLD have it over us at the moment and to be honest have had since the first year in this comp

Melbourne at Melbourne - not a great record there
Adelaide at home - Adelaide may have the plate to play for so I can not see them relaxing....
WE ARE IN TROUBLE.....

Our defence has been shit all year.

The last couple of weeks we have been able to paper over the cracks but the better teams will always find us out.

My opinion of our defensive stocks:

Porter is a converted Middie and is a raw as hell. Good going forward and has reasonable pace but he is NOT a defender. Posistionally clueless.

Wilko....Right Back is his proper spot. Simply not good enough to anchor the defence. Quality Fullback...average CB.

Bojic...solid player who will get better after a full season of HAL. Great prospect.

Heffo...great going forward but looks as rusty as hell atm. Not top quality but big heart and a great asset when in form.

Boogs...best natural defender in the squad. Lack of pace is a worry. Needs to be paired with sweeper with pace or switched to full back. Quality player IMHO.

D'Appuzzo and the other bloke with chocko name....jury still out.

We need a couple of signing to fix up our shambolic defence quick smart.

I said all year that danny should have been watching Bozza .
CCM  had the chance to offer him more but they think that Danny is a great keeper well the number of goals our defence conceeds tells you all and how many games did we loose when BOZZA played  and directed the defence.
We will get hammered by the asians if he cannot position himself for the cross shots get Peter to call him away from sydney.

As a keeper I disagree with your summation - reasons why are as follows

Danny and any sense of a lack of having his dense organised can be possibly blamed for the first goal - it had nothing to do with lack of having defense organised - it was two things

1) Heff - he turned the ball over for the first goal and he was skinned all night on that side meaning defenders have to push over and thus the backpost is free (unless a mid drops back)

2) Trotty - may seem funny but I ran into him after the game and part of me was wondering what the score would have been with him between the sticks

Bozza is not mobile enough as a keeper - he was not mobile enough when he played for us and I honestly can not see him making one ounce of difference last night (bar the second goal - Danny was too slow off his line). Bozza may be quicker now but we haven't seen him to make that call.

What we missed was a hard bastard in defense - Jedi. QLD have Moore and Tiatto, Adelaide have Og and Melb have Musscut and Vargas - WE HAVE NO ONE......

Apart from the 2nd goal, I cant see that Danny was at fault with any of the goals TBH. Nor was Porter (3 of them were down the left FFS)

I am making a point that danny is not experience to organise the players and we dont have anyone else and Boza never got 4 goals in any match this year and you need to look for a long list to find when he got 4 in a game.

pretty simplistic to just blame the defense IMO.  QLDs second goal came from our midfield loosing the ball in our attacking third (hutch) with our wing backs committing to the attack, as they should. Seems to me the improvements need to come from the TEAM being able to keep the ball for extended periods of the game, and go forward with the ball on the ground. playing the ball out of defense would also be a good idea.
Providing support and options for the player with the ball would also help.
The number of times we cleared the ball straight back to QLD was diabolical, any defense would fold under this sort of constant pressure.
Quality ball to the strikers feet is another good way to win games, instead we seem to play some form of aerial ping pong/flick on rubbish and never get the ball under control or to feet.
THESE ARE VERY BASIC COACHING ISSUES
Most of these issues have plagued the team all year, we are playing a type of football that would not be acceptable in PL1 on the coast
I think we have the talent to play good football but I am starting to wonder if Lawrie has the ability to take the team to the next level.

Only kept one clean sheet though. Nil all at Welly! He was no saviour and we were not in a better position on the ladder when he was playing

hmm I beg to differ where porter is concerned. he held the right back position much more solidly than clarky was able tonight. Once porter went into the mids they owned us down the right hand side and got 2 easy goals.

Watch the replay tomorrow and see if Porter could have/should have done better on just about every goal.

When every goal came from down the Left hand side, I'm interested in how you reach this conclusion. Porter was Ok.

Minnecon was the man last night plain and simple! He was great to watch and I just wish he was wearing yellow! GCU are going to cruise to the plate next year!

agree re GCU, theyre pretty scary on paper - hopefully they dont gel as a team... i think we need to recruit some quality with the loss of jedi last night showed we arent half as effective without him

I too am confused with the Porter bashing when two goals came from our left, one from a keeper error and one down the middle.

Porter did get beaten by Zullo a couple of times but give me an a-league back that hasn't this season
