CENTRAL Coast Mariners' Chairman Lyall Gorman has hinted that the team will play a handful of 'home' matches away from Bluetongue Stadium again next season.
In a letter sent to Mariners' Members on Friday, Gorman acknowledged that the club's decision to stage two 'home' matches in Canberra this season had "caused concern for some of our Members".
However, he reaffirmed that the decision had been necessary due to pitch problems.
"I must emphasise that a major factor in this decision related to the ongoing turf rectification requirements of Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium," he stated.
"With no alternate playing venue on the Central Coast and with further turf rectification works planned by Gosford Council during 2010, this will continue to create challenges for the club next season."
The Mariners played only 11 home games in Gosford this season, while all other A-League clubs played 13 home games.
Two of the Mariners home games were played in Canberra, leaving Central Coast fans with a gap of six weeks between home matches in October-November last year.
The club maintained this was due to pitch problems, however, rumours persisted that the decision had been made for financial reasons.
Although this decision was widely unpopular with fans and was blamed by some for a drop in crowd numbers, the Mariners' Chairman defended the situation.
Gorman added: "A positive outcome from hosting two of our games away resulted in us holding our 2009/10 membership prices which would not have been possible should 13 home games have been played at Bluetongue Stadium."
Membership prices remained the same as the 2008/09 season because, unlike other A-League clubs, Mariners members had the same number of home matches.
Mariners' members have also been asked to complete a survey so that the club can 'overhaul its membership structure'.
Whilst the survey asks a number of questions about membership issues, including the possibility of part-season membership packages, it does not ask members to give an opinion on the issue of relocating home matches.
There is no indication yet as to how many home matches may be relocated next season or where these games may be played, however, Gorman tried reassure to the club's members.
He continued: "We will always have the interest of our Members foremost in any planning that the club undertakes."
