love that despite signing 11 new players, its a "Heart of the mariners" combo of hutch and wilko that brings our first goal of the season!

Great away performance by us. Simon was massive. Pedj played well too but needs to learn to get rid of it quicker when pressured with no options. Back 2 look solid.

Great managing from Arnold tonight. Pulled Kwas out when Heart started to posses and put Rostyn in which made us a wall. He did it at the perfect time and it had the intended result. Impresed.

Something he said tonight in post game was that his pre season with the team was aimed at defensive shape and they have only just started on attacking and possesion. Obviously waiting for Perez to join. If Perez is out for a while then expect more of the same.

Gotta be happy with the result. Especially since I placed my first bet on an A-League match - won $50 hehe

And Wilko is highest goal scorer in the league LOLZ

I watched TWG pre season discussion show and tonights broadcasters.... we seem to have a lot more respect than in previous years...

For me Matty was great tonight... but for a team that has not played that much together tonight was impressive ... tight passing... strong in positional defense ... loved it........

Has to be a mistake with JVS on fantasy a-league, he is worth 17 points from that game, apparantly saved 2 penalties?....

What I love about our defence atm is that Dutchy is very solid and will, hopefully be playing week in week out.

Last season Doig lasted like 2 weeks before the defence had to be reshuffled. All the changes ended up creating huge holes in the defence. With Doig able to cover for dutchy we should have some great defensive results.

Now for Perez and holding possession at the half way line while stringing more then 2 passes together. Bring it on.

Anyone else get this impression ... that GA was playing Matty in the role Holeman plays for Australia... i.e. very attacking central mid but with a roving defensive role to steer play into where we have players in defense...

As an aside SBS prediction team all picked Heart...

Must admit to being a critic of Arnold over his time at Northern Spirit FC and in the National side, but credit where credit is due tactically Arnie got it spot on last night with the substitutions. Not totally convinced on Matt Simon at #10, but it worked last night so kudos to Arnie.

Rumour has it that Melbourne Heart are keen to sign Dee Fibrillator in order to get the heart started

In a strange way,Perez getting injured was a blessing. Will want him fit again ASAP tho', hopefully next weekend. Great start to the season, whatever anyone says away wins are an absolute bonus...not worried about how entertaining we were. Home games are a different proposistion tho', we have to play good football at home this year. Kwas....can do things most players can't but can't do things most players can. A mystery to me.

What did we all think of the new stadium? I like it, far better for watching than Docklands, but I was still a little surprised how far away from the field the seats are. It has a more personal atmosphere, somehow, though.

As for the facilities....nowhere near enough toilets. When there's a queue for the men's, you know there's a problem - particularly when the stadium is, what, 1/3 full?

Crowd was pleasant, didn't feel like I was going to get stabbed and dumped in the yarra everytime I went to get a beer like I do playing Victory. Seemed like quite a few who hadn't been to any/many HAL matches. Made a bit of noise at the appropriate moments, oohing and aahing over close goals and got behind the Heart towards the end.

As for the game....I'm going to get flamed here, but I walked out of the stadium feeling like we lost. Thursday night was more of the same negative crap that's held us back since Season 2. As soon as we scored that one goal (and let's not get too excited - we didn't do anything spectacular to earn it, it was weak defence by Heart), we took the pressure off, sat back and defended. It was a long time before the ball got anywhere near the Heart box again - even longer before it reached there with purpose. Our midfield went to the pub, I think, because they went MIA. Left it up to the defence - and no matter how good your defence is, if you're defending long enough you WILL give the other team opportunities, particularly when your opponent has some good ball skills and fancy footwork. And this is exactly what happened, several times, but Heart couldn't convert.

As for us? Even when we got a counterattack and all their midfielders were up around our box, we still refused to pressure them, instead knocking the ball back (how the f*** did we go from a counterattack halfway into their half, to giving away a corner???). A couple of times somebody put a half-hearted ball through to Matty Simon who, as lone striker, would occasionally be able to come close to threatening the goal, but that's about it - for a significant portion of the game, he was the only one of our players, apart from the defence, who actually seemed to be putting some effort in.

As for the subs - what's the f'ing point in bringing Mrdja on when he did, we desperately needed some life far earlier in the match and Mrdja could've provided that.

Mariners have been guilty all too often of bringing negative attitudes onto the field - either worrying too much about the occasion and forgetting to play football, or taking the foot off the accelerator when we score a goal, to giving up when a few things go against us. Yes, I'm ignoring the many positives of our team, but only because I'm talking about things which I've always felt have held us back (well, that and our corner defence.....).

Last night I longed for at least a couple of long balls, just in case Matty would be able to do something spectacular and excite somebody. But no - all we could do was play in the same manner Arnold taught the socceroos - knock it back, knock it back, knock it back.

Heart actually created more opportunities upon goal than we did, and numbered up on the ball carrier quite well too. Aside from the goal, I think there may have been only 1 real opportunity we created. I actually believe Heart were the better team on the night - and our performance doesn't fill me with confidence for our season.

Forgive me, but I'm still singing the old Socceroos line:

ARNOLD OUT!

Still, on the plus side, JVS was looking good, though he wasn't really tested. I look forward to seeing what else he's capable of - looked very solid in that game.

Well i'm not going to flame you cap'n...
But will suggest that you may have stood in the beer line one too many times.
Matty playing lone striker??

I understand it was not pretty football.

It was simply, your away, you get you nose in front against an unknown quantity that are heavily tipped to win and you decide to try and park the bus.

Your right that as GA said, we lacked the touch and possession we would have wanted in the second half and so made life much harder than it had to be, but having watched quite a few of the pre season matches, what I saw was not a style of play so much as tactical execution. I suspect Many Perth Glory fans are wishing right now that at 80 minutes when Perth go up 3 -2 that instead of subbing Fowler for another striker, Mitchell subs in a DM and closes the whole show down.

Arnie did this. At the right time. And it gave us 3 points.

I agree about playing some exciting football. But i have every confidence we will. But away from home, I can handle grinding out results when required. And away against heart...? Lot of quality out there... I think it was required.

For much of the 2nd half Matty WAS fairly alone up front - and when he went and attacked, he often had no support.

Playing out the win when you're 1 goal up early in the game is a terrible strategy - as I said, Heart created numerous chances and it was more due to their lack of finishing that they didn't actually score. If we're already on a negative game and Heart did already convert, then psychologically the next 20 minutes are going to be all theirs. Basically, asking for a 2nd goal to follow a first. Trying to hold onto the slight lead instead of looking for more security is just asking for trouble - and we were simply fortunate not to lose.

Sure, our defence was looking pretty good - but like I said, no matter how good your defence is - you will give your opponents chances sooner or later, then it's up to them to convert.

Incorrect, that was McBreen.

As the second half went on Matty was playing deeper in the midfield and defender more as he should.

We have to remember that Arnie has only had four weeks with the boys to work with them tactically. It is obvious that the bulk of these sessions would be working on defensive tactics, especially away from home against a team widely tipped to be in the top three.

As weeks go by we will use the basis of these defensive tactics to build some attacking tactics.

I could not have been more please with our first half effort, especially as the basis of the team was not new signings but those roundly criticised by our fans as being "lawrie's favourites".

I thought it was McBreen up front alone....not Matty.....Matty was shadowing Skoko mostly, and quite successfully at that.

BUT.....I do agree with you that the standard of football from us was nowhere near good enough and that Heart WERE the better team. For the first 15-20 minutes I was quite pleased with the way we played, but then we reverted to the style/standard of previous seasons. If we play like that at home then we'll be lucky to get anywhere close to last season's crowds.
