A week is a long time in football(i know it's a cliche!). Last week after the Phoenix game there was alot of positivity and we haven't become a bad side in a week. With the Olyroo boys back the squad is strengthened and Sutton needs more than a couple of games to get used to how we play.A good win against Sydney will bring the confidence back, this really is a massive game, for them too.

I have that feeling too, and the penalty issue is a major ingredient. We all know that when we get a penalty (not common) there is a less than 50% chance of a goal. When the ref points at the spot I feel fear, I know many of you do as well, and so do the players. A penalty is a clear opportunity to land a decisive blow in the match - what does our fear of it say about that? Missed penalties are both the cause and the effect of lacking belief. The belief will come only behind the technique - Sutton's penalty was rubbish, so was Hearfield's. Neither of them owned the experience and were easily out-manoeuvred by the goalie.
We need a player to work intensively on penalty technique, and I think that player is Bernie. When you see him with the goal in front and the ball at his feet you know he's going to be strong. His goal against GCU was pure authority. We need a penalty man who, however much at stake, however good the goalie or hot the weather, would fire an unstoppable rocket into the roof of the net and only bad luck could prevent a goal. The situation now is that only good luck will result in a goal.
We're shortly entering two cup competitions, time to fix this problem.

I think the fear is throughout the team as well.
The only reason Kwassie used to take the penalties a few years ago was that he was the only one in the team willing to have a go.
I have not been happy with penalties since the final of the pre season, V1.
Something definitely needs to be done.

I waited 24 hours before I wrote this because I was so angy and sickened by this performance against the Heart.
I know it was hot but I am still not happy. This performance was like a facsimile copy: the shape was there, the passing, the movement but it was all in shades of grey, there was no colour. Patrick talked afterwards of the performance being 90%; simply not good enough. Not good enough when Brisbane are coming after us like Thorpey on the final leg of an Olympic relay. And I don’t accept Arnie saying top two is good enough; I want to win. With Brisbane demolishing Perth 3-0 I expected a massive effort from the players not just physically but mentally too but it just didn’t happen. After the early spiteful exchanges everything settled down to a predictable slow paced rhythm. Bojic was the only one who gave full effort throughout the ninety minutes; Bernie gave us a lively lift when he came on but all the others went through the motions. Kwasnik came close with a good header and almost caught out Bolton when he tried to curl one from the edge of the area but unfortunately he just didn’t curl it. There was a lot of huffing and puffing especially towards the end but no clear chance created apart from Rogic winning the penalty. We all expected Patrick to step up, we knew he would make it 1-1 but up stepped Sutton and we all knew he would not score. Almost inch perfect was his shot but that inch was very costly.
We weren’t good enough and must do better for the remaining four games of the season. Undoubtedly we have been badly hit by the Olyroos requirements but we must lift because our current form is that of the wooden spoon not Premiers. I don’t want the momentum to shift to the Roar. Arnie is usually very good at getting players right for a game and his skills will be tested to the full over the next few weeks.
On a positive note we are a very good side, we don’t lead the competition for no reason and we do still have a 3 point lead. We have a great structure and outstanding individual players. This is the best Mariners side that I have seen. Get back to winning ways and all will be forgiven!

How I saw the players:
Ryan: welcome back; just saw calm and authoritative and great sweeping
Bojic: yes, of course Heart created chances down his wing but this guy doesn’t ever stop. His workrate was phenomenal; good crosses, searching runs and even a piece of left footed juggling to get out of trouble. Pity he didn’t get more on his headed chance.
Rose: went through the motions.
Wilko: went through the motions
Patrick: played with presence but is better than this
Griffiths: melts in the heat
McGlinchey: went through the motions
Hutchinson: too slow
Rogic: did ok for a kid. Great work for the penalty
Sutton: Poor. An Old School striker who believes he doesn’t have to work; believes he should conserve his energy for the penalty area. Defenders used to be scared of Matt Simon; there won’t be any scared of this guy.
Kwasnik. Quite decent for Kwas; on another day might well have scored
Bernie: banging on the door of first team selection. Worked hard, took players on, tracked back.
McBreen: put more work in his few minutes than Sutton did in his hour.
Hearfield: impact sub who didn’t make an impact
MoM: Bojic
apart from Ryan,Bernie, Rogic and McBreen all the others should take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror

. my simple view ... they did to us what we did to them the last time we met

. despite some of the negative views and the obvious pressure it puts on us for our run to the finals i still think we dominated. they scored after a scuffed shot landed at the feet of their striker as two players went to ground ... well taken opportunity in the end but it was not without luck

. even though we scored 3 in our last outing there is no doubt we have struggled to score since matty left. rogic has been our most potent threat ... hopefully with the oly-kiddies back we might start to fire up front again

. as for the penalties ... they should all be practising them - half an hour after every training session should help

As for penalties...they should be taken by someone with a successful track record. Patrick & McBreen come to mind, can't think of any other current player who's got one in ordinary match play.
Can think of plenty who haven't...

MOM Bojic
Sutton crap, crap and crap
Bernie below average
Rogic best talent in Australia (worth 10 aminis and rupees)

We seem lop-sided without Bozanic. Hutch is good, and very solid, but both WeeMac and Bozanic add a very fast, nimble point of attack. Hutch can't take players on. I think we really missed that in the heat. It was frustrating being there.
