Matt Simon signs with Sydney FC

I wonder if we would have been able to change our playing style the way we have if Matty was still with us? Or would it have been too hard to get away from the 'get the ball to Matty!' attacking mentality?

After tonites game vs City, it's easy to compare ROD with Matty(when at CCM)

Lack of 'quality' service to make a 'fair' judgement on their performance. Roy hardly got on the ball tonite, but still worked really hard off it.

Hope Roy doesnt experience a season of what Simon had many patches of throughout his seasons.

Simon doesn't fit the new system not quick footed enough and lacks ball control ,although he holds the ball well and has other strengths he's no longer the new mariner

"He had a really bad year last year. He's got a beautiful daughter that was prematurely born, he was stuck in Hawaii and missed a whole pre-season," Arnold said. "Then I received a phone call in the middle of August saying no one in the A-League wanted him. He even offered his services to the Mariners on minimum wage just to stay on the Coast because he loves this club so much and they turned him away."

Flores 2.0 except Flores didn't hit us for 2

Good on Matty.
Mariners deserved to be bent over by Matty after we showed no class in trying to keep him.
Although both his finishes were quality, as usual, our defenders left an opposing striker in hectares of space.

I thought we let him go because his wage demands were too high. If GA's quote above is true then I feel bad for Matty.

Makes me wonder if sometimes a special case can be made for the club to return the loyalty of some players?
Maybe that's too sentimental with limited places available.

Damn it all. :(

Story I've heard is he offered himself at minimum wage only after he'd demanded a raise and had it rejected and we'd moved to other pastures.

Makes sense, once realised no one interested, called us desperate and then called Arnie desperate

Regardless of which fact is fiction or which fiction IS actually a fact ....

The booing from Coasties towards him when subbing on imo was an absolute disgrace to a former player that gave nearly 9 seasons of his life, scored more goals than any other Mariner & was better value than the likes of imports such as Perez, Mane ,Verness who were ALL signed to score goals .......AND ALL FAILED miserably.

I even think Matty was better value than Aloisi, considering the $850k he pocketed for less than a full season.

Simon played with the passion of a kid that dreams in his backyard of making it big and then actually DID! and when he did he got to DO IT in that very backyard in front of friends, family and anyone else who had seen him develop from the Wyoming Tigers to East Gosford Rams to The Coasties, CCUFC & then his beloved Mariners.

He pulled off a Mariner's jersey and pulled on a Green & Gold one for the Socceroo's.

He was even voted into our Team of the Decade FFS !!!

We didnt boo Rogic when he decided to play for Victory, (whose carreer imo went backwards under Kevin Musc#nt & imo would've done better to come back to us and gotten more game time then what that tard gave him)
We dont boo Vuku either when at Perth or now Victory.

"To Matt Simon, the way you've been treated is a disgrace, and for that I'm ashamed, that we could, let alone would do that to one of our own.

I apologise, not on behalf of the Coasties who booed you on Saturday, nor on behalf of the club itself. I apoligise that my effort in cheering for you when coming on, as hard as I tried, was ultimely similar to those that booed you .....it just wasnt good enough!"

Matt Simon your records will stand for most likely another Decade and hopefully wil prove the nay'sayers just how wrong they were.

You're a Central Coast legend no matter where you play, no matter what colour you wear because You know & I know & so too do Others know, that together we have yellow in our hearts.

Keep dogg'n from the front
Keep kicking'n em &
Keep scoring them too.

Best of Luck, Rowdy Roddy.

No one booed where I was. But I could hear there were some around. Stupid. But that's a crowd of football supporters for you. Always a few.

I'm glad we could gift him two more goals as a final present to help him get more time off the bench at SFC, and it was great (for he and them) that Arnie was able to throw him a lifeline. HOWEVER, (booing aside) I still think this all needs to be kept in perspective.

They had Brosque and Smeltz - two of the most successful ever strikers in the HAL - and then signed Holosko, a marquee from Besiktas. Arnie gets a call from Matty, and yes, they can still then afford to pick him up at a very low cost, and in their position he represents almost zero risk. Meanwhile...

Our current strike force consists of O'Donovan and a youth league striker. However! We still have a few peanuts mixed in with a bag of loose change that Charlesworth (I'll assume grudgingly) gave us to purchase a third striker...

The club looks at Matty's profile... he's proven (if not outstanding) at HAL level, he bleeds yellow, and we, the fans love him... However he is turing 30 this year... he has had a bad run of injuries and form... He has made 41 appearances in 4 years. For a return of 6 goals. And it's rumoured at least, that he initially wanted more than minimum wage...

What else do we have... well we have a very fit and healthy striker who has been banging them in for fun in the NPL, just scored a hat trick against Wanderers, will come for minimum wage, and is a couple of years younger...

I'm sure if Walmsley had already signed three excellent strikers and could still have afforded to sign Matty as a fourth, he would have been ecstatic.

But his reality is if Rooney walked into the club and said he was willing to play for food stamps and free thai massages from Wombats missus, he'd still have to send him on his way.

Meanwhile, If Arnie had had to choose between Matty and any of his other 3 strikers... he would not have been picked up.

So I'm not prepared to give the club a hard time over this. They may choose to regret it. They may even be already. But I'm not going to blame them for it. Was a reasonable decision to make imo. Even though I still wish he was here in yellow where he belongs.

Standing in Bay16 (who mostly cheered him), the boo's were coming from both sides of the grounds and a quite a few from either side of 16.

Don't get me wrong, I dont blame the club. It's modern Football, which means it's 'business as usual'.

It was the collective numbers that left me dumbstruck.

To put it in perspective, Michael McGlinchey wasnt even booed as much as what Matty was, and McGlinchey DESERVED to be, he weasled out of a signed contract with a US (the club that helped 'make' his career! - to go to the Nix for more Ca$h.

Even more perspective is that Matty played, what ? A season & a half less than Hutcho and look at the accolades and way he's treated. :-|

Given the season he had with us, letting Matty go made reasonable football sense.

Sadly, it blew up and bit TW in the arse.

Doesn't make the decision wrong.
