Mariners vs Wellington Phoenix (22nd August 2010)

If conceding two goals straight through the centre of defence, and continually pumping the ball up the middle of the park is the atrributes of quality defenders then yes, to quote Graham Arnold "we have the best centre-half pairing in the league."

Need to value possession in the attacking half a lot better than today otherwise we will be murdered against the likes of Brisbane and Perth.

I'm not expecting too much this season, however hopefully we are building for the next two.

A mate who is working in Wellington and went to the game ... sent me an email and said ... your midfield does not move off the ball and puts huge pressure on your backs .... only Oliver was making runs and that Hutch, Porter, & WeeMac did not create space or track back to make an easy pass especially for the back central three in Dutchie, Wiklo & Rostyn...

He said went the outside backs had the ball on the sidelines their was some tracking back... but tho the center of the park there was little to no movement ... meaning passes were being picked off forcing the backs to belt ball up field at times as they had very options...

It got me to thinking of the AU game last week and the trail match against Sydney and he may have a point...

Anyone else see this ...........

Really disappointed today. Rose didn't get into the play enough for me today. He had that really good run into the box and if it wasn't for Durante, he would of had a shot. Went back to the old fashioned 'kick and hope'. What was the staritng line up. Hutch up front with porter in on the right. Really lost today. I was fairly happy with the defence and I thought griffiths was very good, but where we fall down is the final third. I know it's the hardest part of the game but we are terrible at it. I believe if we don't fix this it will be another long season.

Also what was the go with having shots about 20 yards out. I think paston had one if the easiest matches he has ever had. Very disapointed

Lol, not alot of talk going on in this thread, which i guess sums up everyones feelings about the game!

Don't want to talk about it!

Cannot help but wonder what would of happened if we just played with a 4-4-2 and actually had a potent striker, not a galloping gazelle...

In other news, i would love to see a back 4 of

Wilko---Dutchy-Doig---Rose

Is this at all feasible?

I thought Matty played the lone striker role quite nicely when the ball was played to his feet and defended from the front. He held it up well whereas last year he was turning it over all the time. The midfield was awful especially porter and we seemed static most of the time.

Anyway can't really blame GA for going defensive in the toughtest away trip of our league. In regards to our general play you can't really expect things to change in a single off season. Bloody SFC are still hoofing it with the best of them and Lavicka's in his 2nd season with them.

What happened to the possession football with 4-4-2 narrow diamond Arnold was so keen on?

*facepalm*

People didn't seriously think things would be better under Arnold?? Did they?? Or have you just not watched a single game this clown has "coached" in the last 4 years??

I point you to (as the best examples of the shit he calls management):

Socceroos vs. Kuwait in Canberra
Socceroos vs. anyone in Bangkok in 2007
Olyroos vs. anyone in Beijing in 2008

F**k, even the games where he took over for Pim's touchline ban, you could see a return to the garbage he peddled during his time in charge.

Arnold out. Sooner the better, otherwise we're just wasting a season (or seasons, god help us all).

In a word - Limp

Where was the fire?

Apart from Matty, and the rare raid, we seemed to be at walking pace compared to Wellington. One serious shot from Bozza does not a champion team make.

Surely McBreen would have added some pace and spark to our damp squib attack.

Awful I'm afraid.

To be fair it's the hardest trip in the league and the kiwis were/are just too physically robust for us to handle. And their long ball, high ball made our small midfield struggle.

But we were awful.

Hutch playing upfront, foxing? Was fox sports having a laugh? Our shape?? 451 is my best description... whatever it was poor tonight.

Midfielder, ABSOLUTELY AGREE with your Kiwi friends assessment re movement and pressure on backs.

We lacked virtually all adventure and creativity.
Which was EXACTLY what we showed for thirty odd minutes last week that had us all so excited.

Quite unbelievably depressing that our most attacking minded player seems to once more be our bloody left back.
Olli had some good moments again but his decision making in the final third needs to be much better. Though the runs off him lack often lacked invention and timing also.

Simon battles fantastically well. We know that. kudos. But he is not a good passer and so struggles to bring others into the game, and he simply can't beat a man... Can't shoot from distance... He's just too limited.

Today we looked just as we have for the lat two seasons, toothless, lacking in creativity, scared to play it forward fast, move off the ball and take players on.

Amazing we can play the exact opposite of the last 30 minutes we were all so excited by last week.

Porter, absent and without impact. I'm not a hater, but the difference between Porter wide ,and Ifill, Bertos or Bozanic is just massive. Formation fail with Porter playing there I'm afraid. Rather have Amini on, or even Mrdja to cut back in onto his left and shoot. NIck seems to lack the mental guile to find the ball and space when central and it makes him look dead lazy. Which he clearly is as even when he's a late sub he still doesn't turn and chase if he loses the ball. However his two decent moments were when he had drifted wide and found the ball tonight. For all his short comings, I think he can strike a ball and knows where the goal is... which I'm concerned hardly anyone else does... So I'd consider him...

Weemac, played like a decent DM sure... but did NOT do a goo job as an AM. We looked EXACTLY like last year.

We obviously _and badly_ need Perez, or a genuine Perez replacement, because we had NO ONE running the show today. Hutch did a better job as AM last week. But he was as useless as Porter and Weemac tonight in whatever position it was that he was supposed to be playing today. Griifths - fairly solid at most times, but he was the one who let Muscat's run go without chase or pressure - then they scored and we fell apart from there. It was a bad mental lapse.

Dutchy was ok, few shite passes yes, join the club, but I think he really ran out of ideas and targets and to his credit then started ipushing up with the ball instead after he'd given it away a few times with the hit and hope balls.

No McBreen Arnie? Not that I actually think he would have changed anything in that game tbh. Fact is we did not have the players on the bench imo that we needed to change that game. Being a number 10 and or a skillful fast slippery striker.

I had hoped Mc Breen would be a part of the answer to our goals problem, but he didn't even get on today and so with Matty lone striker, I seriously worry again where our goals are going to come from this season.

Today was Weemac as AM, Matty as lone hard working but limited striker... rings bells doesn't it... and we looked very much today as we did last year.

442, narrow diamond with Perez please against SFC. Also Amini and Kwas back on the bench also for mine please.

I honestly don't even care if we win at the moment, I just really want to see us play some more really enjoyable football that the crowds will love.

Forum Phoenix, couldn't say it any better. Well said. I too want to watch attractive football. I am a advocate to play for a result but after 5 seasons I want to see a bit if enterprise.

Only watched from 55mins due to work so cant really comment.

I saw us out muscled and out worked by a well drilled side with no more talent than us apart from Ifil. I thought the Ref was terrible and allowed far too many fouls to go unpunished which futhur helped the Kiwi's.

I thought team set up 4-5-1 was poor as was team selections, as was playing Porter infront of Pedj. I'll say it until i'm blue in the face Porter is not a starting 11 player. He is a good squad player and useful off the bench or as emergency FB.

I thought Bojic was our MOM and probably only player to warrant points (maybe Simon for effort).

Thought Hutch tried hard and was our most Physical middie.

Thought we played long ball shit again.

Back to the drawing board and 442.

I gotta agree with the feelings you expressed that it is better to loose and develop the side than keep putting out the same rubbish...

IMO Perez & Amini are a must in the starting line up...I afraid that Hutch has had many chances and its time to give Amini a run of games ... and it is blindingly obvious Matty is not a lone striker ... and if he is then why did he spend so much time on the wings chasing balls. IMO this is our best run on starting side

---- Matty ----- Breen

Oliver ----Rostyn---Perez -----Amini

Rose---Dutchy-Doig---Wilko

What scared me the most was I felt I was watching Pim coaching the Socceroos for a result ... and not to put on Perez was similar to why no Carle or James Troisis in the side....

GA has a past which we all understand and if nothing else we expect decent shape and player selection... we got no shape on Sunday much like the first 50 mins against an under strength AU...

what a pathetic, uninspiring and dour peformance from the lads... was hoping to see signs of improvement and the team gelling by this stage but it seems to be going backwards if anything - not that we reached any heights against Heart or Adelaide.

I found it really hard to submit my votes for points for this match.

GA will need to prove himself quickly before the monkeys start climbing on his back and once they are it will be really hard to get them off. With all the critics he has had with his time as assistant and interim manager of the national team and player/coach with northern spirit (obviously something i recall pretty well) it will only be a matter of time before people start saying "i told you so" etc etc. I for one was willing to give him a chance, and am still reserving my judgement till roughly half way through the season but the initial signs are not good.

The promise of a more entertaining and inventive brand of football havent been seen yet apart from a brief stint at the end of the match against Adelaide. He has big boots to fill with Lawrie being such a popular local figure and for the sake of the club we really need GA to be a success imo.

As for Perez it is a concern that someone lauded as our biggest ever signing is yet to play 3 rounds into the season, im hoping he isnt injury prone - and for those concerned about our small midfielders, he is probably the smallest of the lot which leads me to thinking of something a little left field - given Matty Simons success of taking Josip Skoko out of the game what about the prospect of McBreen up front and Matty playing that terrier role in DM. We have never replaced Jedi and whilst he is definately not Jedi he always gives it 100%.

I honestly dont understand why everyone is stressing about our midfield being too small? Havent you all seen messi's "Impossible Is Nothing" video? Is there no place for a Japan or South Korea amongst our A-league? A team that is so nimble, skillful and free-flowing that running all day and bumping into us will get you nowhere as the ball is already gone?

I dream of a world where the Amini's and Perez's constantly make the Muscat's and Milicivic's look like glorified rugby players turned inside out

Northern Spirit, I was only having this discussion today with my son that Matty would be best suited to DM.

I agree about the promised brand of football being delivered. I decidedly saw beautiful movement in the pre season - but that was usually with Amini on as our number 10 and against lesser opponents. Without a true number 10 behind our strikers, who are not the kind (except by forcing errors) who can create something out of nothing unfortunately, I'm very concerned.

Give us Ifill or WIlliams with Perez on the park and we could likely win this league.
But otherwise I'm scared of being all but toothless this year.

But fairs fair, I will wait and watch us with an actual number 10 playing and hopefully providing quality service before I judge our strikers too harshly...
