Mariners vs Wellington at NSO - Game Talk

What happens if they don't show it
Does not really matter.
MC will see it if he's at the game or hear about it from others if he is not. He is the target audience.
All that matters is that MC understands that 80% of "his" teams fan base are unhappy with moving to NSO. Risking 80% for a possible, undefined improvement in 20% only makes sense to a problem gambler.

And I wouldn't be too worried about his reaction to a banner as long as the wording isn't too strong (no need to be unnecessarily rude anyway). He should understand when you buy a football club you are also taking on board thousands of fans and with all their opinions and passions. It would be unrealistic for him to expect otherwise.

I've simmered down slightly after reading the article and statement from the Mariners denying confirming that they're looking at more games at NSO due to the cost of running a club purely on the Coast being too high.

While there are a lot of questions here mainly due to lack of information about what the costs are, how moving a few games to NSO will be the solution, and what the other plans are (if any), I doubt we will get any answers any time soon.

This season the Mariners have stepped things up a lot; have been communicating a lot more with Facebook and Twitter, put in some great game-day initiatives including the Loose Cannon, the actual cannon (we need to hear more BOOOOOMs from that!) and other activities around the game, so MC etc are probably scratching their heads wondering what else they need to do to bring crowds in.

I think as supporters of the club we can step up and take a bit more responsibility for helping out. I still think the club needs to communicate a bit better about issues such as this. Threats in the press saying we'll move the club if you don't start turning up are only going to piss those off who go to every game and invest a lot of their own time and money into the club, whereas those who don't go to games anyway will just say "meh... I don't go to games anyway", but it's not up to us as fans to go to them every week with a list of demands; I'd rather be asking "what can we do to help?".

This is the 9th season of running ccmfans (formerly marinators.net, RIP) and this year we have been pushing to expand activities and build on our supporter base. This isn't "just a website" but a strong community of people who love the Mariners and want to talk about every little detail of the club, with many more coming back every day to read over all the discussions. In the off season we had our logo professionally re-made, giving us a strong identity, we've worked with the CCLC to bring back the Kendall pre-game, are official sponsors of the Mariners, and always working on more. We've got some merchandise on the way which will be on sale very shortly, with proceeds going either to the Mariners via more sponsorship packages, or back into more merchandise for fans, and recently we've been working with the Official Supporters Club and Yellow Army on a special event for pre-game before the clash vs Sydney on December 7 (stay tuned for more info on that!).

On top of that, and trying not to sound too formal, we'll be looking at getting volunteers together to expand on the amount of content produced and distributed by ccmfans, help the club directly (as we know, the Mariners are only a small club and basically run on fumes, not many staff), and work on a couple of other initiatives for this season and next, which will be a big one, 10th A-League season!

As always, if anyone feels they have an idea of how we as fans can help the club out (and I mean realistic things that we can implement, not ideas like cheaper tickets, free beer, or better cheese platters for the bay), make a new topic then we can start hashing out details and get the ball rolling. There are a some people on here with great ideas, so let's have 'em!

And back to the actual topic here; it would be nice to know what the targets are, how much they are being missed by, and what we need to achieve to make sure the club stays purely on the Coast, but that may be asking a bit much.

I think we can still put the questions forward but at the same time we can build support amongst ourselves and help out as much as we can.

Thoughts?

I know enough Mariners fans who's overall business smarts and marketing skills place them waaaay out of the clubs reach salarywise.

How many of those fans would be prepared to donate their time pro-bono (or cash) on specific projects that the club wants to do but cant afford?

Some that instantly spring to mind are:

Staffing promotional booths at CCF grand finals?
Chipping in for a big f**k off banner or hoarding at the Gosford, Ourimbah and Tuggerah offramps of the M1 to promote games?
Looking at some sort of database mining from the ticketek data (if they dont already)

IMHO its the really basic, on the ground, nitty gritty promotion and selling of the games where they fall down.

notwithstanding that they are trying their best, id be more inclined to support a fans group financially if they were funding initiatives like that one

Great post.

Promote harmony, and do all in our power to stop boycotts, protests, etc. And talk the club and the experience up as much as possible.

Nothing will kill support quicker than disharmony and division in any organisation.

I have been very vocal in this discussion primarily because of this.

This club will always stay centered on the Central Coast. It will not shift to North Sydney Oval. It is a shit of a ground for football. The COE is on the coast and will be remain linked to the Mariners as is the main support base.
Stop worrying about the club being shifted. If that is going to happen the shit will have really hit the fan (like unpaid players and staff, tax liabilities and half the stadium being closed and the club dying).

The club is neither dying nor moving. Our majority shareholder is looking for ways to improve the fan base. If a trial game there to test the water is the way to go, I say support it and make it a positive experience for those who may attend. It may pay off. Who knows it could become a great one off event each year.

If it is successful and becomes more (doubtfully more than 2 or 3) than one game, terrific it has worked, the club is on a firmer financial footing. It is not a great price to pay to travel to a couple of games. A lot have been making the reciprocal journey for 9 seasons. Easy trip on train. Inter urban to Epping, change for North Sydney.

MC has got behind the club and supported the club in a million ways, and is always looking for others. I am happy to give him my support.

Adz, I did not look too hard for abuse, but I think there were some liking MC to Palmer. You don't get more abusive than that.

A pub for NSO, Percy's over the road from the main stand.

*That's* what you came up with? FFS.

Had to LOL. If we have to go looking for abuse rather than having it jump off the screen and smack us in the face, I reckon that's a good sign the forum has come a long way since a few years ago :D

I was never suggesting it was enough for mods to chase, just responding.

Insult was probably a better term than abuse.

Great ideas off the top of your head. I'd be keen to get promotional booths organised at all sorts of places. There's a whole lot of potential, cost would be the main thing, but it's something that can build up over time. Off the top of my head there would be Gosford/Wyong Races, Erina Fair, Westfield Tuggerah, All sorts of markets.

I'm just pissed, again, at the uncertainty as to whether I'll have my club into the future.
I'm happy enough to push/tap into the north Sydney market as long as that's all it is.
The thought of becoming a north Sydney team in time makes me sick to the stomach though and despite the reassuring murmurings being made I remain unclear as to the the clubs longer term future/plans.
I love this club and if they ever did become a north Sydney club I would feel betrayed enough to walk away.
Ditto

Is the club losing money though? Have any reliable figures been published?
With crowd averages nudging 10k for the last two years and this season likely to be above. Supposedly 10k is the break even figure. Why are they losing money?

Perhaps maximizing their current revenue streams would be a good place to start. For example look at the CCM club shop and compare it to the Scum's online shop.
They have a greater range and more available. We don't even have this years home shirt up. How many merchandise dollars have been missed and is it the same for other sources of income?

I was willing to put some advertising dollars into the club but they were so half arsed (while pleasant) I've decided to keep my cash and reavalute next year.
This is quite damming from someone stupid enough to buy a hoarding at the ground for cash.
Maybe they thought I wasn't serious......maybe they are overworked.

Anyway I'm gonna hand out some brochures outside the game on Friday night with a couple of the girls.
