Mariners vs Roar

I've never posted on 442 but I have a browse every now and again. There are some turds on there, but I think there is some merit to what the Roar guys on there have said.

1)Roar at full strength are better than us at full strength.
Tonight certainly was a very good opportunity to get a win over them and we still couldn't manage it. I think we are still in the position where we will fight for a top 2 and hopefully make the GF and then you never know what can happen. They are the clear favorites for the comp and rightly so

2) The ref wasn't kind to them tonight.
He was appalling to both teams and one eyed supporters which we can all be at times will mainly remember when their team was grieved against. (We weren't complaining when Rojas wasn't given a penalty last week)

Still though, when people laugh at comments saying we are one of the top 2 teams, I can only laugh back and the 'no-one rates us but we don't care' kicks in. We played some sexy football tonight (especially up the left side)

I was thinking before the game that if we don't beat the Roar tonight, the next best thing is if they stay undefeated until the finals. When they keep scrapping draws like tonight (which they did well to do), complacency inevitably sets in and we might just surprise them if we get to battle them for hosting rights.

Time for us to keep our focus and not drop any points against weaker opposition (I'm looking at you Newcastle!) BRING ON THE DERBY!

What a game .... watched from Byron in a carvan park... the camp oven has access to Fox ... best I can say was some Dutch people asked what country was showing the league and said BS when we said this is Australian teams... some Poms said they never tho it was this good ... a Germany guy said he wanted to go to a match...

My analysis ... the last 25 mins of the first half and the first 15 mins of the second half was the best we have ever played ....

We can beat them but they are a very good side IMO the best ever in Australia and big corg's to all at the Roar for getting this squad would love to play them in the GF...

Perez & Olly were class

I don't necessarily agree with this. I still don't think their is one 'complete game' where we have gelled.

During the year we have all talked about the solidity of our defence - from Ryan through to Griffiths. Last night, in reality, 5 of those 6 had poorer games than their normal games. Only Rose bucked the trend. I realise it was our opporunity, with McKay and Franjic out - but realistically we were beaten by mental lapses - in particular for the Brisbane's second and third goals.

The mental lapses were caused by fatigue, which is in turn caused by the way Brisbane play. They never believe a game is gone - and all credit to them.

If we play to our best, and have the mental toughness to keep our concentration, then I believe that we can beat them at their best.

BTW - I also believe we have not seen the best of this team this year. They continue to improve week by week, and are already surpassing my expectations for this year.

The fatigue issue is a big one - and I mean physical, not mental I think it's is going to the big issue in the next 11 days.

Hopefully we can pick up three points against Newcastle, because the long haul to Perth while the muscles are still aching from 3 games in quick succession, and then the longer haul back home (I'm sure it'll feel longer) could be a real problem.

Arnie is very different from Laurie in that he plays the same teasm week in and week out, which is fabulous for combinations, but in this case could work against us.

I'm really worried about the next three games

Well then should I say 'the Roar at their best that they have shown this year' is better than 'the Mariners at our best that we have shown this year'. We have no idea how good each team will get, both will hopefully play better than they did on Wednesday and I'm sure Ange doesn't think he his team has played to the 100% best of their abilities for a full 90 minutes. For this season's title it is a very fair comment to say that the Roar are the best team in the league at their best.

Don't get me wrong, I think we are a good shot at beating them if we get the chance in a GF, but I'm just trying to say that there is merit to what the Roar fans are saying.

I can live with that - let's hope we get the shot

. without the benefit of seeing a replay i didn't/don't know but he seemed to come back from an offside position to receive the ball

Was onside at the time of pass but did only just get onside. I'd say it was one of those attacking benifit of the doubt could have easily gone either way.

Was definitely onside, no qualms about it. The confusion lies in the fact he came from an offside position before the ball was played, which you are allowed to do, so long as you are onside once played. See it a lot in set pieces with attacking players standing offside to unsettle defences.

. you mean the benefit of doubt we are yet to receive in 6 years :piralaugh:

. yes i know that is a gross exaggeration ... perhaps i should say the benefit we have seen only once in 6 years (later revoked) and because of the circumstances in that case are not likely to ever see again :p

Great article on the tactical evolution of us v the Roar this year.

Timmers..that`s a great article,thank`s.

I think where we went wrong with our tactics was that when we scored we should have denied the Roar possession for a long as possible.

They denied us early in the first half & we retained our shape & composure, but when we did the same to them they looked flustered.

At one stage, (in the second half) when we were clearly on top & holding possession, they were arguing amongst themselves, but once they got possession back they started to settle again.

Just my observation ..your thoughts?

Yeah maybe. I think that despite it being a draw, it was still a tactical win and if not for a few defensive lapses and a goalie error, we would have won it.

If our defence played as they have for most of the year, we would have come out on top. I am more than happy with our tactical approach to the game.
