CRACKING game. Obviously. Brisbane were mostly awful tbh, as their fans are saying, but they took their chances - bar mercifully Costa's last one - exceptionally well. However i think FULL credit has to go to our side who unreservedly brought that less than sparkling best performance out of the Roar.
However, yes, we should have won, because dodgey hand balls and missed opportunities all aside, all three goals will go down as defensive errors - and with the exception of Ryans, not really even physical but more mental lapses and or tenacity which can/should be so avoidable.
First goal; a clear blunder by Ryan which I'm sure he puts his hand up for. The wind would not have helped, but he never had a hope in hell of claiming that, and that far out he has to trust his quite remarkable shot stopping and his defenders unless he is 99% sure he can reach it even if he needs to go through whoever is in his way. Which with his frame, with Paartalu, Wilko and Dutchy contesting, was a very poor decision that I trust he will learn from.
2nd goal - Wombat said it earlier - Pedj was entirely culpable. He let Broich go untracked into the box.
Unfortunately this didn't surprise me at all, because I saw him gas out on another lung busting length of the field run just a few minutes earlier and was already expressing my concerns to those around me that he was dead on his feet... It's a hard one because Pedj is a wonderful athlete, very fit with a fantastic engine and work rate and offers us a lot going forward, however tonight he over estimated his stamina and was then unable to fulfil his primary role and that is to defend. It's a tough one, but sometimes just a little less is more.
3rd goal, bloody hell but you could see it coming too, Griffiths who I thought had a very good game otherwise, had either run out of legs or was mentally fatigued or both - because as again someone else mentioned - he stopped closing the space down and was slow to track and pickup. Meyer should simply not have had that much space. Because, while it doesn't happen that often, if they hit it right, you get punished. (Man Rosey was pissed - and rightfully so - he got forward invaluably but still always did his job at the back- it clealry drove him crazy to watch the lapses cost us so badly - that man should be in Qatar atm as far as I'm concerned)
To be fair to our players however, GA, who I hold in very high regard for his achievements so far and all his coaching with CCM, I believe stuffed up his subs tonight and it likely cost us two points.
I understand the tactical shifts that occurred due to the changing scoreline, and that he withheld a planned sub etc... however regardless of the score shifts, you could clearly see the fatigue setting in and that we were crying out for substitutions.
Ironically Kwas, of all people still looked to be going strong upfront and for the first time for mine he's truly looking like an 80 minute + player - gods he flourishing up front under GA - superb game from him tonight. Anyhow, we were clearly still dangerous up front - whereas our RB and three of our mids were all fading fast...
And by god I wanted Amini on earlier!!
You could literally feel the vitality spark and energy ooooozing out of the kid and the potential that something was going to happen if he only got more of chance. I understand his natural sub possy in Perez was still doing well, Griffiths however was looking pretty cooked and then when the Roar went down a man at 74 mins... We truly had the luxury of making such a change and if we had brought Amini on then I really think we would have put them to the sword. At the least, defensively, it was VERY likely with his fresh legs he would have been buzzing around and tracking back (Like he always has when he has played before!) and would have helped foil any of their late opportunities.
BUTTT, and this is where it really gets me, even if we wanted to play safer, like for like, Hutch had fresh legs and closes the midfield space down very well. But still Arnie sat on the subs, meanwhile Brisbane with 3 pairs of fresh legs, even though they were down to 10, started launching at us on the counter... As such I wasn't surprised they could play 10 against 11. And then finally our first sub was into the area on the field where we already still had significant threat and penetration. And heaven forbid at 3-3 against ten men we could have taken off a DM and play with three strikers or two central AM's -an really go after it - which was my personal preference.
So all in all, for mine, I think our subs were a real ballsup tonight.
BUT, I was very impressed by our teams overall performance and what Arnie has achieved with them as individuals and as a team with a clear system of play.
A bit of luck, or a bit more focus and skill by individuals in a few given moments and we would have definitely won it tonight. W4 all know that.
When it comes to the finals, while they were missing McKay and Franjic, we were nowhere near this side in our first two games and tonight we were all over them. Add Mckay and Franjic back into the mix and i think our final against them will make for a cracking game that will be a very tight affair. As we have improved out of sight and could make a real go of the finals.
And finally...
What the hells with 3 mins of extra time with a sending off, a pen, 4 goals, six subs and Kwasnik down for two minutes...??
Ridiculous officiating. The reffing was shit again. Though TBF it was shit for both teams.
