What a match! CCM are definitely up for the big games. Every player rolled their marker time and again, brilliant to watch. Big ups to everyone who went and screamed through the rain. I would've loved to have joined you but I can barely afford to eat atm .

Looks like they've been practicing putting it over the top for the Duke of Gosford to run on, it worked a treat. Can't wait to see it with a few games practice ;)

Feeling good about this game, but I reckon it's going to be epic. Got Delovski refereeing. Definitely going to be hitting up the stream for that one.... Glad that Thompson is out, but we typically keep him pretty quiet anyway. All you need to do is breath in his general direction and he falls over anyway....
It certainly was EPIC but im sure not in the way you thought when you posted

Mariners hit Victory for Six

A month ago Ange Postecoglou said Melbourne Victory could catch the Mariners and take the Premiership; a month ago Ange Postecoglou said he had no sympathy for the Mariners losing Tommy Rogic, in the transfer window. Today the Mariners showed no sympathy to weakened Victory and flushed their pathetic title hopes down the stormwater drains at Bluetongue.

The Mariners were fabulous in the slipperiest of conditions, putting on yet another 90 minute demonstration of scintillating attacking football. We could get used to this!

Mitchell Duke ran Victory dizzy with his determined running in the first half, his pace, energy and deadly finishing proving far too hot to handle. Ibini was lively on the right, Rose cutting down the left and Montgomery kept a tight rein on midfield.

The Mariners passing and movement was outstanding, they were at their irresistible best and it was no surprise when in the 17 minute Duke started the scoring spree. A super early ball from Bojic set Bernie free and Duke cheekily and confidently flicked the ball into the net.

The Mariners defence then looked out of the car window instead of keeping their eyes on the road and let Victory back into the game. Sainsbury and Zwaanswijk each casually gave the ball away culminating in a careless clumsy challenge from Duke to concede a penalty; Milligan’s shot was too strong for Ryan who got his hands to the ball.

The Mariners were rocked but have the priceless quality of ignoring such set-backs and resumed their dominance of the game. Duke probably should have scored when he tried to float the ball over the stranded Nathan Coe but he didn’t have to wait long, racing onto a splendid ball from Rose to round the keeper and coolly slide the ball home. Half-time 2-1 and the Mariners in the mood.

What we all wanted was a third goal to put the game to bed and we got it with McGlinchey pressuring Victory into a mistake and calmly placing the ball past Coe. Game over, we thought, but somehow Victory came back courtesy of a rare Ryan error – albeit a difficult catch at full stretch of ball as slippery as soap – and Sainsbury couldn’t avoid scoring in his own net. Victory, with that arrogance of theirs thought they could come back but as the rain poured down the floodgates opened and the Mariners ran riot.

McGlinchey again; Fitzgerald, who I thought was a pacifist with his reluctance to pull the trigger, emphatically scored from the edge of the area and finally McGlinchey with the classiest finish of the night, if not the season. If he keeps playing like this Lionel Messi might have to surrender his crown as the world’s best player!

I will leave the coaching staff to deal with the occasional defensive lack of concentration and focus on the positive of yet another compelling, overwhelming, clinical, entertaining and highly skilled night of football. The Mariners were well up for this, attacking from the start and still driving forward, looking for more, right til the end. They always thought they were going to win; it is the mark of champions. You simply can’t ask for more.

I have to give McGlinchey the MoM because of the exquisitely completed hat-trick but Mitchell Duke runs him very very close. One point to Monty whose snapping and biting in mid field gave Victory no respite.

Great night for a Mariners fan, watching your team destroy another team, 7-2, 5-0 and now this!

Graham Arnold has taken a leaf out of the book of Guus Hidink and has placed a massive emphasis on the fitness of the boys this season (credit to Clarkey for that one) the way we continually run teams off their feet and destroy them in the last 10-15 mins of games is our secret weapon I reckon.

Looking forward to the ACL on Wednesday, but more excited to watch the game against WSW on Saturday night, get there early, be loud and get behind the boys!!!

Bernie: did bugger all until halfway through the second half when he just ripped them apart.

i thought bernie did plenty in the first half. he chased down 3 or so dangerous positions.
he continues to impress me with his work in defense and just queitly.
i believe he needs to be a little bit more self scented in attack.

I thought Bernie was very good for the first sixty minutes, then disappeared, and then got his second wind and came on strong towards the end.
And, bathing in the warm glow of the beautiful footballing display, I quite forgot that McBreen missed the penalty :)

I think Bernie and Pedj were instructed to play conservatively in the first half to deny Rojas and Traore - and it worked too.

I thought he certainly played conservatively in the first 60mins. It was like he didn`t want to get his boots wet.
It was only when he "smelt the blood"that the shark in him came out & tore them apart.

. interesting that when i think back to the start of the season when bernie first appeared as a 'winger' i think he was utterly confused about where he was required positionally

. he was hesitant to attack ... but more importantly, rather lost defensively. it was as if he was standing where he thought he needed to be but not sure of what he needed to do

. now he is more likely to know what to do and when to do it. congratulations to the kid, he seems to have matured as a footballer ... and of course credit to arnie and the players around him for helping him along

How many games has Weemac shined on the left? Any? He doesn't belong there & we'd be better served by Mile.

If Olly is fit then he should be in. He was brilliant there a few games back & needs anpother chance while Hutch has been solid but doesnt give you as much as the other two. He's nowhere near as defensively solid as Monty & cant pass a ball as well as Olly.

I've gone for Fitzy on the left but wouldn't be surprised if Mile starts again.

scottmac, not having a go at you but I thought I should let you know that I wasn't too wrong with Weemac starting on the left. In fact Olly was the only who did not start from my line up.

In regards to the mariners performance, there were moments I thought I was at the wrong stadium. I thought I was at Nou Camp watching Barcelona play instead of Mariners. I was impressed really. Prior to the game I thought that GA was going to be extra defensive with his tactics but to my surprise we started pressing from the start and dominated MV for the whole 90 mins.Great stuff. That's the way a top of the league team should play. Specially at fortress bluetongue. More of the same v WSW !!

line up well picked. but Weemac did his work in the middle not on the left. he is not a left sided player & even though that's where he started his best work was done in the middle. would love to see his heat map for where he spent most of his time

Apparently Arnie walked back to Terrigal on Saturday night - he was seen dancing round lamp posts with a rolled up umbrella, jumping two footed off the pavement into puddles, and splish sploshing while singing "I'm singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain What a glorious feelin' I'm happy again"

That is a cue BTW for someone techy who can put together a clip of the goals, and Arnie on the sideline jumping up and down in the rain...:innocent:

Does anyone record all the matches? I stream it here in Jakarta, but I'd love to watch some of the games again. A DVD with all our home games this season would make me very happy!!
