Mariners vs Brisbane Roar

Arnie got it wrong with his line-up but that's the first time he has stuffed up this year and as someone else has said it probably wouldn't have made much difference whichever line up we had.

. yeah i don't think it would have made any difference ... could have made things worse

. with their dominant midfield i think the idea was to nullify them for the first half an hour (we often start slow anyway) ... not a bad plan. but it was the players (not arnie) that failed to execute the plan. don't concede in the first half hour and the game is anyone's ... conceding three in 23mins was not arnie's fault

you change a formation and give the team one day's preparation and the team will struggle to know what is going on early

was the case sunday

. i will respect your input but can't believe that adding another defensive midfielder suddenly meant that they didn't know what to do. irrespective of formation those goals should not have been conceded

. the back four didn't change but the dm got a mate to help ... from a simple minded fans point of view that should make it easier to defend not harder

. people keep harping on about how coaches need to change formation during a game if its getting away from them. but quite frankly they've got f**k all chance of being able to do anything if your personnel are so inflexible they can't adopt what we are talking about here - if you can't do it with one day's prep ... you sure as shit can't do it on the run during a game

Spot on.

This was by no means Arnies fault. I still believe it was the right call to change the formation the team just didn't peform well. If thats the worst result we cop this year then we can take solace in the fact it was against the best team in the best of form.

Lets not forget that this came on the back of an away trip to wellington then Melbourne then home to Gosford in not many days with I would guess was one of the youngest average age teams we have fielded ever.

So mick what situation forced the changes.

Panic stations and going defensive because we were playing Brisbane. If you sit back you will get carved by Brisbane. The teams that have troubled Brisbane this season have taken the game to them.

Just because we go two defensive midfielders doesn't mean we get defensive cover. We were very vulnerable out wide which Brisbane exploited with all five goals. Brisbane had two players attacking wide and with our three attacking midfielders not being able to cover defensively it left both Rose and Sainsbury exposed with players running at them at will.

How the coach not being responsible for this is beyond me!

I honestly don't think it was so much our shape as the way Brisbane's movement/mobility and technical ability to move the ball so quickly - that just rendered whatever shape we were in completely lacking. We just looked so static in comparison.
Mind you, I think that in terms of taking the game too them being the best strategy it is now crystal clear and that a 4231 against them is not the way to play. This is a team you MUST score against 3 times in my opinion of you are hoping to win the game.

. because it was not the wide men putting the ball in the net (generalisation)

. this is all from memory as i don't have the benefit of watching replays on fox. but i seem to remember us having 4 or 5 guys in the box vs one of their players who receives the ball and slots it away

. i can't imagine how that IS the responsibility of the coach. there is no reason the only attacking option shouldn't be picked up by somebody ... anybody. but having said that brisbane were too good

I agree completely with this.

We were no chance of stopping Brisbane getting the ball into attacking areas. We did have the chance however to force them to shoot from distance and try to snag spectacular goals by picking up the lone striker and any runs from midfield. This was the task given to Griff, Hutch, Swan & Wilko and they failed to do it effectively.

No matter, Adelaide got stung by the same margin and they only had 10 on the field.
