Mariners vs Brisbane Roar

Thank god for Matt Ryan.

McBreen is an idiot.

I'm all for the attacking mids, and they do well in attack, but then we have 4 players up front not defending.

Hutchinson is useless.

Again, it's the youngest members of the squad who are playing the best.

Why don't we rest some mids, and play two strikers? With Mrdja as backup we can play two up front then have Kwassie as a sub. Bozanic and McGlinchey need a rest.

Our defenders can attack well, how about they start defending!

f**k my life .....no Mcbreen for Sydney game now ...awesome ....
Kwassie was soooo onside for that disallowed Mcbreen tap in ...ridiculous ...although it was the first time kwas was onside for months

Well that f**king hurts.

Ryan was easily the best player on the park tonight wearing yellow. Kwassie was onside, however the call made amends for our allowed goal - Bozanic was offside and impeded Theo.

Hutch isn't quick enough in transition and doesnt have the ability to know what he is going to do before he gets the ball.

I've said all along that we are building a squad to win the title in 2/3 years from now. Brisbane were a class above us, they have plenty of players who can beat their opponent, making it seem like they have an extra player on the park. However, they have built a squad to win it this year, they dont have any young players coming through (that i know of), the test for them is in the coming years.

For us, provided we keep our talent and work on our weaknesses (a couple of new strikers, a out and out right back and some back up for our left and right midfield) we will be a real force to reckon with in the coming years.

This season i am content if we don't lose our derbies. We should at least finish 5/6th, and maybe shake things up in the finals.

This was a hard one to watch. But to put it in perpective we have had one bad week...going into last weeks game against GCU all was rosey. Not sure if it is fatigue...or a couple of injuries...or putting too much pressure on the kids...
Truth be told we have exceeded expectations so far this season but to be honest the next couple of games will shape our season.

IMO ...Doig in..we are lacking experience.
If he is fit...Mrjda in ...he is the only player we have who can score more than 1 goal a game.

Hopefully a week off will help.

I get the feeling we're due for a huge hit-out against Sydney. A week's break will help.

Outclassed and outplayed. There are a lot of things we could do better, but it wouldn't have mattered too much, this side is simply too good for us at present. Faster passing and faster running all round. Our zonal defending - at least i think thats what it was - was completely ripped apart. 4231 didn't work. OBVIOUSLY. But there's not a bone in my body that thinks a 442 would have made any difference.

*Shakes head at the singling out of Hutchinson - absurd. Edit: (Not directed at you universal - just read your post after I posted_ spot on I think) Back on Hutch, I would not rank him as "good" today, but he was still far from our worst, yet I've already read several posts on 442 and here laying the lions share of blame at his door. It's just ridiculous now.

Several games back I began calling for Griffiths not Hutch as our first choice when it became apparent that he was offering more. I think this was/is correct - but if people want to sling shit at a DM _TODAY_ then Griffiths was FARRRR more culpable. Absolute passenger at best - he was truly awful, very rarely involved in the play - and was ALWAYS the slowest to track back contrary to what some clown said on 442 just a moment ago. Was our worst player for mine. It's not enough just to jog around in a parody of zonal marking and watch opposition players constantly run by. Hutch had no significant impact - but his work rate, tracking back and completed passes was easily superior to Griffiths.

Anyhow, I'm now starting to believe when we are in control and on the attack, Griffiths is our first choice, but under the pump defending, Hutch is better. Frankly though, I'd like someone faster, with a higher work rate and speed of thought than either of them from what I've seem - as per Brisbane.

Weemac 8 - real quality in the second half and hungry for the ball.
Ollie 6 - did well in patches - needs to work on his finishing.
Ryan 7 - not a lot he could do on the goals - some great saves again - but he's simply too young to organise anyone - which is not his fault, but the fact is that it doesn't help either.
Kwas 7 - Well taken goal. Played some good balls and looked by far the most dangerous of our strikers.
Rose 4 - Easily his worst game in the yellow and Navy - got caught too narrow and too high time and time again.
Sainsbury 5 - only not a 3 because he's young and new. Proved today he is not up to this level as yet - but we are obviously very light in options.
Wilko 5 - tried hard - but ultimately failed. Felt for him on the own goal. He'll be looking to put these last 3 weeks behind him.
Dutchy 6 - Still quality, but with ineffective screening by the DM's we got carved up through the middle.
McBreen 5 - tried but was ineffective and seemed to be fatigued after 30 mins.
Hutch 5 - Also tried but also ultimately ineffective and lacks the speed of thought required against fast pressing teams.
Griffiths 3 - Did not want the ball, was extremely slow to press even when bothered, stood off his players and was lazy tracking back and failed to track runs. Could be a fitness issue, hopefully as he was simply awful today.
Amini 5 - overawed by Roars speed of play and after muscling up so impressively against the jets, was disappointingly muscled out of the game and all but smothered into being entirely absent from play.
Doig... No point scoring.

Thats an average of 4.6

When your playing a team who is playing at a level of I'd say 8-9. You WILL be soundly beaten. And we were.

Just hope for a bit of recovery and a bounce back against SFC now.

They will be very confident they can beat us now, and we are bound to be a bit rattled.
Hopefully the good recent memories of beating Glory by 5 at SFS will help us out a little.

So 2 DM's huh? Your all fired!
Do I Get to keep my job?

A very disappointing afternoon.
We were simply outclassed by a very good Brisbane team that had played a sililar amount of games to us in the last fortight.

No excuses. They were good were weren`t!

The double DM was totally ineffective & unlike Forum Pheonix I thought Hutcho was extremely poor all game.
IMO I think having Hutcho next to Griffith also affected Griffith`s game.

Weemac had a good 2nd half but didn`t get the ball much in the first half.

Rose got caught out a few times but in his defence he was trying to pick up two players.

For mine the best player on the park was Mat McKay (the Roar captain). He was just outstanding & oozed class,it was a pleasure to watch him play (even tho I hate Brisbane.

Also,a big wrap today for Wilko.I know I canned him the other day but today I really liked the way he got stuck into the ref for that obscene tackle on Sainsbury & also I thought his run in the 82nd minute where he popped up in front of goals was awesome.(Shame about the oggie tho)

We can`t change what happened today so let`s concentrate on next week

that was f**king terrible,
having worked so much lately i havent been to make games as often,
today sadly was the first time in a while, and i thought id bring along a few mates who've never been to a live match, i dont think they'll be back again after that display..
worst match i think ive ever seen from our boys,
i know they've played alot of games recently, but f**k you's are professional soccer players, ive seen 6 year olds that dont walk around when there losing. showed not interest.
mcbreen please leave the coast you dont do anything of value, ive not seen anything positive so far.
sainsbury not up to the standard yet but think he did well.
ryan did well, so did ollie and weemac, but they need a break it, everyone was out on there feet,
kwassie did well when he came on,
dont know what else to say so much disappointment and anger right now.

Gotta agree. That was basically what I wanted out of this season before it started. GA has transformed the squad very quickly, but we are still very thin in some areas.

Outclassed and outplayed. There are a lot of things we could do better, but it wouldn't have mattered too much, this side is simply too good for us at present. Faster passing and faster running all round. Our zonal defending - at least i think thats what it was - was completely ripped apart. 4231 didn't work. OBVIOUSLY. Heard a lot of dejected Mariner fans today - and it was nowhere near our best performance - but I think we really need to give credit to Brisbane. They were simply outstanding in the first half.

Griffiths had a really poor game, Amini was overawed, Rose had probably his worse game this year and I'm sure Ollie is playing with an injury as he has lost some pace in the last couple of weeks. I felt sorry for Sainsbury with Broich constantly haranguing him - certainly a step too far for him at the moment.

Anyway - time to put a forgettable week behind us. We are still 4th and with games in hand and TBH the only teams that have made us look bad have been Roar and the Nix away. There is still plenty of good to come this season.

Simply put, I agree with FP and Arnie! We were always going to lose that game (esp. fatigued)...the formation...it didnt work- but Arnie HAD to try something. He took a gamble, and it didnt pay off...well done for trying!

Ryan= unbelievable game. Was brilliant, and is such a talent!

Ref= shocking

Kwasnik= he deserves a start! (and probs will get one vs sydney)

Credit to Olly and McGlinchey- played well

Not too pleased with Hutch, or Rose (whom I love dearly)

Sainsbury was not the best- but he is young and did his best, and he was bullied badly by Broich!

. in terms of general play i don't really want to comment on the players specifically other than to say it could have been worse if not for ryan. don't fault him for the goals ... and redmayne was probably the happiest bench 'keeper going around - that could have been him conceding a shitload today

. they were too good, but i was left with one comment ringing in my ears today: 'it was just like the old days, everybody waiting for someone else to do something' ... seemed to sum things up

. attitude was the thing i was disappointed with. i hope mcbreen sees more than one week away from the pitch - there is no excuse ... and no it was not passion

. at the conclusion of the game the only players i noticed acknowledge the crowd were swayze, wilko and hutch with a somewhat forced lingering from griffiths and bozanic. quite simply that is not good enough

. it was encouraging to have the players face the fans at the post match function. if they had not fronted the management would have been aware of my feelings. swayze's comments were spot on ... acknowledging the performance wasn't good enough and promising more FOR THE FANS

. so lets forget this week and give sydney a spankin' when they think they have a chance

Its not all doom and gloom... we played some good football today ourselves Brisbane took almost every chance they got...so Brisbane at about their best and us no where near our best...

Easy to blame but for me Rose the worst game in a yellow shirt for maybe two seasons by anyone.. and this from one of his fans... Hutch especially in the first was ball watching and made life difficult for all those around him... Amini found out today what it is like to be in a team under the hammer and was nowhere near the player of the past few weeks...

Maybe it was the fourth game in 15 days and all that travel... but we started so slow...

Credit must also be given to Brisbane by gee they played well.. as for young Trent I would be happier to keep him in the side improving than Doig at this stage...

Disappointed but not alarmed is how I feel.

Sainsbury was taken to school today. Although Wilko has been average at RB he is a far better option until Bojic is back. Doig and Dutchy at CB.

Whats the go with having close to 10K last week and only 6K this week (top 4 clash)? With that display today I cant see more then 6K next game with sydney supporters included.

Is the coast really that fikkle to only come whrn we are winning or if its a perfect hot day?

What happens to the corwd if we have two lean years where the team sits in the bottom 2 all season? This league needs to start drawing neutrals to games no matter where a team sits or it may fold when Lowy goes.

Ok. Arnie tried something new... an unbalanced side....it was an alarming failure. Arnie was stubborn, playing Hutcho after a less than useless game against the Jets and yet we played him again as a reward...again alarming failure.
Lets learn from both mistakes and move forward.

Very few positives apart from Ryan and Simon.

Ryan 7.5. Looking static on a couple of times early but really grew and his defenders owe him a drink.
Sainsbury 4. Poor. All at sea.
Wilko 5. Poor game. Ball watching.
Dutchy 5.5. His worst game in Yellow. Couple of good tackles but also left players unmarked at times.
Rose 6. At fault for the first goal but still better than the rest of the defenders. At least offered someting going forward but needs to tighten up defensively.
Back four were rank today. Pick up your players boys and make a f**kin challenge when its in the box!

WeeMac 7. Tried hard.
Hutcho 5. Time for a month (or year) in Yoof.
Griffiths 6. Average tonight.
Bozanic 6. Average but at least had a go.
Centre mids were very lazy tonight.

Amini 5.5. Played out of position and made a scapegoat for Arnie's poor team set up. I would have kept him on and flicked Hutcho.
Simon 7.5. Left isolated but looked like our only hope.

Kwas 7, Kwas is really growing on me as a sub.

Not a good look Arnie apparently skulking off down the race without shaking hands with the opposition coach Ange Postecoglou. Maybe he just wanted to get to the toilet. There were plenty in the stadium who had the s**ts after that performance. The Roar coach chased after him down the race and re-appeared to be met by Moss who shook hands with Postecoglou. I hope I am wrong but the way it played out it didn't look good in regard to post match sportsmanship.

Why would Arnie take so long to replace Sainsbury when it was obvious that Sainsbury was in a fair deal of discomfort from his back injury. Sainsbury was consistently holding his back from the time he was injured.
