I was under the same assumption as you Kev. Recent rule change?

News article today has Arnie saying Sutton will start. He won't have two big men upfront so McBreen won't start. Bernie or Kwas? I'd prob go Bernie.

If Pedj is fit then of course he's automatic first choice, if Sainsbury wasn't suspended then automatic second choice, but if both are out I don't understand why you'd play someone there who has trained all season as a striker or attacking midfielder? He'd need to adapt to his new role very quickly and if he had a bad game wouldn't some people be on his back very quickly!

Oh and Wombat he played there once this year he was thrown in as a CB for the first 3 rounds of the year, he hardly cost us that game against Scum at home we only deserved a point tbh. Definitely cost us the 1 nil loss up there.

At the end of the day Arnie makes the decisions, he hasn't made too many bad 1's (except signing Baird) so whatever team he puts out there he has faith in as will I.

If we get 6 points out if the next 2 games we could be 10 clear again, COYY

Cant remember if he was RB or CB but he was on the right hand edge of the box under no pressure when he passed to them and gifted them the only goal of the game.

A few kind souls claim to have seen him play ok at RB over the last five seasons. I can only say they are people who have never played in the back four themselves........usual story...ignorance is bliss!

The best game Brad Porter ever played for the Mariners was at RB against Sydney in the epic 3-3 draw. But that was a long, long time ago during the reign of the Jedi...still a better crosser of the ball than Pedj will ever be but not at the races when it comes to defending. But, if Pedj isn't fit, I trust Arnie and if he gives the job to Porter, fair enough.

Always been a defender myself, not really sure what that's got to do with it though?

At the end of the day the beauty of forums and football is an opinion, I respect yours in that Porter is shit and HAL is beyond his level of playing skill, I agree that he's not starting material but in a competition with strict salary caps and the wage structure we have at the Mariners I see him as a decent squad player, we could have worse. My point is Brad has never been given the chance to play in his preferred position of centre midfield, he's always gone on the right hand side. He played RB reasonably well in season 3 and 4, from memory I think he came in for Osman after he injured himself?

Anyway, let's hope Pedj is fit and whoever starts gets us the 3 points

Go you mighty Yellow. Here's hoping Pedj gets a start, but more importantly we get the 3 points. I might add I'm quite disappointed in the CCF in their scheduling of the CC Preseason Cup. Games for Mens Grade at 4pm and 6pm on a Mariners game day? Surely we should be avoiding clashes like this to enable the biggest crowd possible?

Agreed surely this afternoon's games could have been scheduled for last night.

Ouch! You couldn't make it up; what a joke.

Mariners were simply too good today; if McGlinchey didn’t have a hate relationship with barn doors we would have romped home by half a dozen. The football in the first half was sheer poetry with Wellington struggling to get a foot to the ball. Rose and Bojic provided great width and penetration as we stretched their defence and created chance after chance. I doubt we have ever played a better half of football without scoring, the midfield dominated with Griffiths and Hutchinson gaining possession time and again and McGlinchey running Phoenix ragged. Tom Rogic was brilliant; he played like a tailor, unpicking the seams of Wellington’s defence and pulling together the threads of the Mariners’ attack. The way he controls the ball and moves it quickly and efficiently reminded me of Amini with the plus of an always present goal threat. When he set up McGlinchey early it seemed for all money he would score but he hit the shot straight at Paston; one deftly played left foot shot from the edge of the area inched wide with Paston stretched. Sutton was proving a neat focal point with his sure touch up front. We didn’t score through a combination of good goalkeeping and Kwasnik playing to his frustrating potential – almost getting it right but just ever so slightly getting it wrong. Pasfield was a spectator until Greenacre scared the life out of him with an athletic left foot volley, thankfully just over with Pasfield struggling.
We needed a goal and got one early in the second half, a quality curving ball into the top corner from Rogic. We went looking for more, Kwasnik had a shot blocked, Griffiths headed a corner onto the top of the bar. All Mariners and looking good; but then we allowed Phoenix back into it. Pasfield made a meal out of a couple of regulation saves; we began to give the ball away. Pasfield redeemed himself with a trademark reflex save from Greenacre but these were nervous times for the Mariners. Arnie had already removed Kwasnik for Ibini after a silly yellow card; he now changed the complexion of the game by taking off the now tiring Rogic for the old warhorse McBreen. It worked; we got back into the game. Bernie looked lively and although Wellington huffed and puffed we looked more solid. Hutch lined up to take a free kick, Arnie shouted to change to McGlinchey and his free was placed perfectly for Patrick to apply the coup de grace. McGlinchey had time to slalom through for a nasty foul from Muscat and brought a fine save out of Paston from the free kick. McBreen chased a ball out wide but couldn’t find Bernie with the cross.
A good solid win from the Mariners; when the beautiful football didn’t bring reward they dug deep to show great character and eventually were too strong for Welly.
MoM Rogic; well supported by Griffiths, Hutchinson, McGlinchey, Rose and Bojic

How I saw the players today
Pasfield: kept a clean sheet which will please him with one particularly good save. We will, though, welcome back Mat Ryan next weekend.
Bojic: immense, for a man under a fitness cloud just kept going and going.
Rose: Very good in the first half, much like his old self and perhaps should have done better with a run and shot in the second half.
Wilkinson: read the game well as ever; pretty solid
Zwaanswijk: ditto Wilko but added the crucial clinching goal
Griffiths: totally dominant in the first half; when he controls the game so do we
Hutchinson: undoubtedly his finest season and was everywhere today
Rogic: the Tailor – enough said.
Sutton: all eyes were on him today. Nowhere near as athletic as Matty Simon but holds the ball up really well and given time his lay offs will be better hit. Makes the Mariners play the ball on the deck which can only be good.
Kwasnik: very lively , didn’t play badly but just struggled to get the finishing touch today
Bernie: lively and difficult for Wellington, they had to resort to fouling to hold him in check; another who needs a goal
McBreen: brought us back into it when we had lost our way. Seems to be really enjoying his football.
Hearfield: not on long enough to make any impression

And finally, the Fox commentators - Cockerill and Slater
"Tom Rogic wasn't wanted by any A League team last year, now he is wanted by a list of them" - so how come we offered him a contract a year ago?
"Wilkinson was so lucky Zwaanswijk's positioning was good" What the? Isn't that what he is there for?

We were excellent tonight. Rogic was magic - believe the hype. Must start taking our chances though...
I normally don't agree with the conspiracy theories but after seeing the refereeing over the last three weeks I start to wonder. Strebre missing the foul on Rose then giving Pedj a yellow like a shot 30 seconds later was unbelievable. The whole match we copped fouls in an instant while they got nothing at all.
Three different refs over three weeks and the same treatment is very suss.
