10 players from the match squad in the Newcastle massacre are gone.

6 started that day and 4 of the 5 bench players.

That is the highlight of the offseason.

Recruiting has been mediocre. We look weak in attack. We need some quality urgently

MMM clearly has a plan and I am still hearing that the ex-EPL striker is happening, so hopefully that will sharpen up our attack considerably, plus Simmo and Gameiro are also upgrades on what we had previously surely?

Signing a quality RB will be a key requirement too imo.

There are still 3 or 4 more key signings. I have been pretty impressed so far with recruiting.....we have recruited well without spending lots and the squad look far more balanced than in the last 3 or 4 seasons. Agree we need more quality but that will come in the next week or two.

I think in the attitude department we’re cleatly recruiting well. We shouldn’t forget how big a part that is playing in deciding these signings. Nor how important that is going to be if we’re to genuinely turn things around. Talented pea hearts is what we cannot afford on any level.

Way I see it is Simon is better than what we had upfront.and likely Gameiro too if fit. But I’d like that rumoured quality striker very much.

Clisby will certainly be better at LB than Roux and a fading Rose. But we need a better starting RB than McGing.

I’m unsure of how Mulvey is seeing his #10. But I’m assuming DDS is gone and he’s thinking weemac and Hoole. Weemac if back to form will be better than certainly da Silva’s second half of the year.

Centre backs... I’m hoping Cisse is better than Baro. Seems like he will be more of a presence. I think Aspropotamis is definitely better than Rose as CB back up.

Holding mids, is where at present I think we have downgraded with the loss of Wout. But it depends how we will setup.

Wings...well wee’re in the same boat. No loss or improvement.

So on balance we’ve progressed. But hard not to feel we need a deal more. Hopefully two or three more very positive signings to come.

Thwaites has not been at training - If Mulvey wants him and he wants to come he would be here. He has been working with former teammate Xenon Caravella in his hometown of Cairns. He has expressed his desire to keep playing but is worried about the effect of continuing his career away from his family. His wife is a Sonographer and Thwaites has been commuting between Sydney and the Gold Coast at every opportunity to help her with their two daughters. I would love to have him here - just hope we can get game and training schedules to fit in with the Gold Coast flight times.

MM was adamant that players must live on the Coast

Pass. He's decent but I'd preferto pass on a 1000km commuter

Met Cisse and Aspro at this evening’s event and very impressed with both of them. They spoke about the need for a strong on and off field culture, so that was great to hear.

Aspro reckons he will be close to ready by round 1 and Cissé is really excited about playing in the HAL. He spoke highly of both MMM and Andrew Young from his time in Thailand and was really looking forward to working with them and Monty. He also mentioned that he knew Olly from when they were at Reading together.

Up to 5 players still to come if DDS leaves. I think we have probably spent around 1.9M at this stage. The cap will probably increase to around 3.1M. If we are going to spend the floor then we have around $890,000 left to spend for the 5 players.

But for me I’m absolutely disgusted we would sign someone who sued the club to get out when we are supposed to be building a culture. What that says to me is everything they are saying is crap.

. as Oz Hammer eluded to, I always thought the Wee-man leaving had more to do with MC's cost cutting than anything else ... I had heard at the time that his 'loan' to Japan was for free in the hope that they would want to keep him and pay a sizeable transfer fee

. the thing that pissed me off was that the Club let him go out on loan just after Flores was ruled out for the season with injury (when we needed him most). then when the 'loan' was ended we couldn't afford him (apparently)

. so I will offer an alternative view to your question of culture building ... perhaps the reason the Wee-man left was because his situation was the start of our cultural decline - and it was the Club and not the player changing that culture ???

. after all the current focus is on re-building a strong culture which has been missing or worsening since MC took control

I don’t live on the coast so couldn’t make it, how was the turnout?

Quite possible but why would the club fight so hard to keep his contract? He clearly was Arnie’s toy in Japan and as with Arnie failed miserably. There was never ever going to be a transfer fee for him and you can’t sell him to other A League clubs.
He left for Japan because he and Arnie wanted it. It may have suited the club as we are in the business of selling players. The free loan pissed me off as well so club aren’t blameless.

McGlinchey had to pay out his own contract so he clearly wanted out.

As for the culture whether the club or the player where wrong. Usually two sides to a story and probably both made errors.
To sing about a new culture and sign someone who has a perception (I’ll agree to that) that they wanted out badly of the club says to many fans this is a joke.
There are plenty educated fans here who have different opinions which I enjoy and respect.

To me it’s a cheap desperate signing who is in decline. Anyway here’s hoping I’m wrong and if so I’ll say so but like any stubborn person I’m sure I’m right :p

Only a modest roll up whilst we were there but a lot of fans would likely have still trying to get back to the coast from work and I gather the rotten weather made for slow traffic.
