Mariners Squad - HAL 14 - 2018- 2019 - The challenge for Mike Mulvey is over

I’m not Pains biggest fan but he tries hard and cares can’t ask for much more.

Allows Oar to go to the Left wing next year. Actually a smart move for squad balance.

Good point on squad balance. Definitely oars natural position and we absolutely need a true ten - no more make shift, non specialists please. Heard that argument and it’s BS and proven to fail again and again.

A true play maker and a high quality keeper have been our biggest and most costly omissions since Arnie left.

He's been a good player for the club, I wish him all the best.

Now, has anyone else noticed we signed a bunch of injury prone players this season?

Wonder if that was a strategy, get them cheap as chips. Nevermind the fact they rarely play more then 3 games in a row.

Yeah absolutely. That’s money ball. And has 100% been our strategy. But without the research and algorithms that made the approach famous.

If we’re to turn things around. We need to spend probably like we’ve never spent before, and not just spend, but spend well.

We can’t afford another season of budget gambles. This year from a fans perspective has already clearly pushed too many to breaking point as it is.

Maybe we need to steer into the skid with recruitment.
Our sales pitch being:
“Want to be part of Australia’s biggest
A-League turn around?
Want a real challenge?
Want to be part of a club who’s number 1 goal is not to come last?”
Haha.

Mariners are the club for you!

If we’re to turn things around. We need to spend probably like we’ve never spent before, and not just spend, but spend well.
And spend wisely on what we need.
We need to get a spine; keeper, CB, DM, CAM and a striker and we need these to be injury free and experienced.

We also need a full time specialist strength and conditioning coach, and a proper tactician.

This is where what money we have should be spent.

The remaining squad can be filled with youth, etc depending on what’s left in the budget.

And most importantly we need to purchase players in the positions we need, not to just purchase for purchase sake.

Very interesting - thanks for the insight mate. If that's the case, it begs the question why was there a limitation advised if we had a greater capacity to spend (evidently the opinion of the staff member you spoke with).

So Charlesworth wanted to spend but his hand picked finance guru stopped him?

Ok then

I FIGURED IT OUT...pikey secretly gave all the squad funding to Usain DonetheBolt to attract him to his marketing idea gone mad and left Mulvgomery with four pence halfpenny to win the comp...I think

I have to say, i'm really disappointed at Matty's outburst. I want better from our clubmen. The captain should not be dragging the club through the mud like that - and that sort of outburst is a poor look for the club. I think his leadership has been too haphazard. I've seen games where he's really tried and been a good leader, even keeping players in line....but as the season goes on he hasn't done that at all and can't even keep his own cool. I was downvoted heavily for saying I was really disappointed in him for getting suspended for the Jets game (5 YC), but I stand by that.

Look, I've liked him being back in the squad, I've enjoyed his work rate - even though he just isn't clinical enough to really make a lot of it (although that's probably not entirely his fault). But it makes his role in the team unclear. He's not a striker. Sorry Matty, but you just don'w have it anymore. He's almost an AM of some description. Perhaps a false 9 is where he fits in best, as we discussed at the start, but whereas he used to be a point man ("kick it to Matty!" was a really effective attacking strategy that year when he won the golden spoon) he doesn't have what he used to, but he still has good use. Though perhaps the captaincy is beyond him - the season seemed to get too much.

And look, I can understand that. Imagine trying to get these boys focussed week after week, and knowing you're leading them week after week, and have those consistent results. Difficult for anybody. But while at the start of the season he seemed more determined to keep a cool head and not only avoid the shit, but keep others out of it, now he's picking up a lot of silly cards, he's involved in the shit, he's gone back to chasing referees around the park and come out with one of the worst outbursts we've heard in the league.

I mean, of course it's a joke that this is the first time a player has been cited for a post-RC comment - plenty of players have abused referees, refused to leave the field, continued altercations etc etc and NOBODY has been cited for any of it so OF COURSE the moment the CENTRAL COAST f**kING MARINERS do something the MRP is all like 'oh, guess we better look like we give a shit about the game', but it's not like he just called the ref a f**king cheat and stormed off (not condoning that - even doing that should be an auto increase of suspension IMO - but plenty of players have done that with no further discipline); it was pretty bad. And not just abusive, but highly aggressive. I still remember Muscat as a player yelling to an AR "I'll f**king have you!" - which is a threat in anybody's books - and the number of times players can be heard telling the ref to f**k off, get f**ked or call him a f**king cheat and not cop so much as a yellow card is absurd.

Anyway....no players at this stage for next season. What does that mean? I've written a crazy long post in a separate thread with some thoughts, but it's all speculation. I wonder if we tried to keep Pain....and I wonder how long it will be before Tom H realises he deserves better and signs elsewhere

So what are we saying, the now gawnski CFO was the base of the recruitment issues (ie dolling out the coin 4 bob at a time)

It might not be that simple, if MC gave the club some parameters to work within a strict CFO may have been exactly what we needed to avoid collapsing. Over time that’s taken a toll and now there’s a need to spend more to compete and perhaps a fresh perspective is the way to go.
