Mariners Squad - HAL 14 - 2018- 2019 - The challenge for Mike Mulvey is over

With Cisse being appointed in his new role I thought it couldn’t get any worse but f*** me. I have no doubt we have a lack of quality coming, I feel we need a finisher and a CB but won’t happen in my opinion now. It’s going to be a tough last couple of months 995ED225-EF50-4E72-8D2C-033E17E93FA5.jpeg

To be fair to Mulvery, we are a toxic brand and a club of last resort. I'd say his targets laughed in his face
Not happy about all these signings the club promised us.. Did they fall through at the last second or were we ever much of a chance? Either way we were promised something that wasn't delivered

The main problem is Mulvery and his big mouth - try saying "we are always looking to strengthen the squad" rather than "We are signing 2 new players"

Let’s give it another day before we worry too much. Window is almost closed, plenty of time to complain when we know what’s going on.

I don’t like the idea of calling a youth call up a new signing though, to me those were always ours so hopefully there is at least 1 external player coming in.

It can be read another way. The young players he is talking about could be Aspro and Rowles. He may be saying he wouldn't want them to be behind him plus new signings.

The cynical part of me thinks that the club is being forced to promote some of our youth players onto full time contracts just to meet the cap floor spend. It smacks of the player bonuses that were paid to the players during that wonderful year under Walmsley, given we couldn’t even make the cap floor that season.

I also really don’t see the point of shipping out two experienced CB’s only to bring two more in when we are so lacking in options in the front third. As much as people bemoan our defensive shortcomings, I still believe that it is our lack of midfield quality that leads to the defence being caught out too often.

Improve our midfield competitiveness and the team would be much more likely to pick up points even with our lack of striking options.

We have Jem now. An experienced CB would get O’Neill back in the mids too, that would go a long way towards what you’re after.

Agree.

We started the year without a 10, and haven’t even spoken about that being a priority.

We started the year with 2 very good DMs, and so far that’s the only position we have strengthened. Now with Hiariej, Jem, O’Neill, Melling, Berry and promoting Nisbett, we have 6 dms. Only 2 strikers (until I actually see that Gameiro exists, he doesn’t count). Only 2 A-League level wide AMs in Pain and Oar (but both want to play left).

We aren’t strengthening areas that need it.

Shaun has told us a number of times we've spent the cap

And you believe him? He’s the same guy that repeatedly told us that Bolt’s presence wasn’t disrupting the team’s pre-season preparations and we all know that was bollox now don’t we?

We might have spent the cap, had Golec, Cisse and McCormack been with us for the whole season but I highly doubt the club is in danger of troubling the cap any more. Furthermore, if the cap is being spent, the club has used the money very poorly imo.

Possibly an unpopular opinion but 2 defensive players doesn’t make too much sense to me. If we’re playing a back 3 there’s no way Aspro is benched so if we’re recruiting starting 11 quality it means we are bumping Rowles to the bench. I think with an experienced mentor beside him he will get even better and be consistently good.

When he recovers we’ll have Mcging on the bench who has put in a decent showing this season and again will benefit from playing with an experienced player in the middle. Depth is great but I can’t help but think that’s a bit much. Likely means Clisby has played his last game for us too unless MM wants to put him on as a wingback if Pain is out or deployed elsewhere.

Now if defensive means a keeper I’m all for it.
Spot on turbo. Our defence is fine & our midfield is stacked. A keeper & a 10/striker would be nice. Will wait

A good way of looking at the cap and “spending the whole cap” is picturing the players get a wage each week and if they all complete the year at the club then the cap is spent. Ross only got paid up until the time he left the club, same with cisse & golec. Unless we have some amazing signings tomorrow I can’t see us getting anywhere near the cap

Nizzy’s promotion is all but the end for Berry unfortunately. The club should do him a favour and mutually terminate also, I’d be shocked if he’d argue. No chance of a look in. So he can find an NPL1 team and get a couple weeks integrating with them for the new season. He’ll get an okay pay packet in NPL1 and most importantly game time.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Berry.

You’d hope Jem arriving and also Niz promoted it’d spell the end for Melling also, but it won’t.

Wasn’t there a rumour about matias sanchez and matt Derbyshire? Imagine the look on all of our faces if that eventuated.

Tomorrow will be a very interesting day indeed. Deadline day and squad selection for the weekend.

I know you and some others really don’t rate Melling but with what he’s been showing lately I think he’s a fine option off the bench. Jem is a short term visit at this stage, we have no idea if we’ll be able to keep O’Neill either. Retaining Melling as a backup seems like a good idea to me. Depending on the contest too there’s potentially cases where youd want the physicality and ability to contest in the air that Nisbet’s stature doesn’t lend itself to.

Ok I’m going to Channel my inner oddball and get some positive waves going. Maybe the last min “mutual agreements” have been due to some ongoing contract talks and it was a stalling due to money, these two players now off the books allow for that money to be redirected.

If it happens then you can thank them positive waves!

T'was not bollocks. As far as I could tell we didn't have any pre-season preparations to disrupt.

If nothing Mulvey is succeeding where others have failed.

In the mutual termination.
Yeah I think this is important. How many tines have we see terrible signings kept on or linger DDS style causing havoc.

Two releases at this time shows some desire, integrity and clarity of purpose imo
