Ok, you don’t want to saddle yourself with players on 2 year deals who may prove they’re not up to it

If you don’t think someone can be an acceptable squad player for 2 years I question why you’d sign them. You might get a few duds but we carry squad players we never see anyway. I heard we trialled a lot of NPL players and came out with some good prospects. A one year deal is madness and gambling against your recruitment.

If he goes and we don't gain financially from it, we need a "please explain" from the club.

Why would we benefit from it? A 1 year deal doesn’t give any chance of making money on a player. When they signed for us we had leverage to push an extra year, once they’re here and gaining attention we have none and they have it all. We could have had Millar locked down for another year relatively cheap but instead he’s about to significantly increase his wage elsewhere.

At the very least there should be a trigger clause. You play a certain amount of games in a season and that triggers another one or two years.

That protects you against the duds.

Please tell me that I am not alone in hearing the chorus of Kylie’s hit song ‘Spinning Around’ in my head whenever Hoole is on the ball? o_O

I would have posted a link to that part of the song here if I wasn’t a total Luddite.... :D

Mulvey admitted that a player from the United Kingdom would be arriving on Tuesday, while another two defenders could be on the way as well.

The club has recently been linked with former Turkey youth international Jem Karacan, who last played for Millwall in the Championship and spent a season playing in the Premier League for Reading in 2012-2013.

"We've got a player coming over from the UK who'll be here Tuesday and that will bolster the ranks," Mulvey said after their 1-1 draw with Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

"And then we're pretty close with one or two other defensive options."

Once we take off the yellow glasses and stop seeing ourselves on a level playing field with other clubs, we will realise that we are currently a halfway house for players trying to get noticed by big teams, and players about to retire. The fact that this has happened is 100% on MC due to poor spend in recent years.

What is sad is that we will loose more players.

Appears that way at the moment. Our squad management form an administrative perspective (recruiting & contracts) seems limited at best, and probably related to money available for the squad. I expressed concern last season at signing Azdrubal after seeing him play once and had reservations around why we would resign Matt Simon and McGlinchey who are generally ineffective.

I walked away from the game last night questioning based on that performance who would I say performed at a level that would warrant wanting to keep in the squad. For me it was only Hiareij, Melling, Pain and Millar. The rest were willing but pretty ineffective. We are a lot of players from being consistently competitive.

Currently our squad for next season.

Gauci (Scholarship so may not count to squad size)
McGing
Melling
McGlinchey
Oar
Shabow
Simon

It is difficult to know what to say.

If that rumour about Millar is true it’s just more proof of managerial incompetence.
As if he didn’t prove he was worth an extension atleast 6 weeks ago?

Lets not jump to conclusions - look at this from his managers point of view.

There is every chance that he WAS offered an extension 6 weeks ago, but his manager is earning his money and not rushing into extending him. As I have said before, there are 9 (10 if you count the new team for next year) other teams more attractive than us right now from a performance point of view, let alone $$ offered. If I was a player and my manager had extended a contract with the team that currently holds the record for the worst start to a season in history, without at least waiting to field other offers, I would sack him pretty quickly.

The issue is not what/if we have offered him anything NOW, the issue is with the original contract that allows the current situation to happen in the first place. Taking risks on players without having any triggers in contract to actually benefit long term from potential is just crazy.

But realistically, we are a team that has been performing extremely badly for a number of years, and does not have the budget of other teams, so we really have no position of power to bargain from.

I am not liking the noise coming from MM at the moment. Recruiting another DM and two more defensive options, when the team’s pressing need is clearly higher up the park just makes no sense to me sorry.

Unless one of the rumoured new players is a quality keeper (and by that I mean goalkeeper), then I will be very cheesed off, especially when we look likely to not be able to field a single experienced striker on Weds.

We definitely need a FB but probably not a DM.... Though it depends who MM is expecting to lose.
Millar could be a real significant part of our front line, we need to try signing him
