Mariners Squad - HAL 13 - 2017- 2018

My keyboard likes it, it's really into that stuff.
Not real worried or concerned about tonight. Early preseason, squaddies starting, plastic shitty pitch but some poor defence (1st and 3rd).
I watched Perth and WSW v NIX last night and they both would have lost easily to Blacktown, they were utter rubbish. It shows that match fitness and match situations (playing alongside another) counts for a lot.
Please don't mention Sydney, any local MPL side could have beat Darwin

Could we?

We did play better than WP or WSW, no doubt - but it still hurts badly to be the only HAL club to lose twice to a NPL club, and to do it in 2 consecutive seasons. We (the fans anyway) needed this win.
But, there WERE a lot of positives (and Okon's substitution decisions certainly weren't one of them).

Of the 18 players up for renewal at the end of the year nine of them Glover, Kennedy, Rose, Rowles, Ascroft, Rose, Powell, Asdrubal, Appiah-Kubi did themselves no harm. Having said that only 2 of those players played from the start tonight.

This season looks like it will be one where a lot of players will have to have a good season to be here for the next one. We seem to have had a good time in recruiting this season (especially recently). I think the rebuild will continue, maybe before the season, probably in January and most certainly at the end of this season.

It is also illuminating see the base we are coming off. These are the aggregated points totals for the last 3 seasons. Note that Perth's total is skewed because the actual points received were used in their salary cap rort. season.

SFC 150
MV 143
PG 132
BR 124
MC 118
AU 118
WSW 102
WP 101
NJ 69
CCM 59 - (23 + 13 +23)

Lets assume that we make the finals with at least 40 points. The only team we may pass is the scum and they would have to have another poor year. 40 points should be our minimum target. Arnold always had a target of 50 points that meant we were top 2 each season. Averaging less than 20 over 3 years in a league where there are 81 points available is poor in the extreme. This seasons team has the potential to reach 40 points, but the squad is still very thin. We really need the squad players, that have been given the opportunity, to show that they can step up alongside an experienced spine.

Well last night proved the squad lacks deep and the formation/tactics need work.
Bingham not HAL standard, Hoole not a 10. Roux and Rose Snr regularly caught out of defensive position. Pearce not HAL standard.
Big ups to Appiah, Tommy H and Baro though, their quality prevailed.
Need to sort out what's the go with the defence when wing backs are attacking, can't defend with 2 guys. And what's plan of attack, are we playing through the middle or via the overlapping wing players.
Glad we've still got 2 months of preseason, lots to work on. In saying that there was plenty of nice play 20 odd mins either side of half time.
Would have been nice for PO to take this comp serious though, it is another trophy to win.

Agree with above post 100% teams will quickly work out they have space to play in behind our advanced FB's potentially leaving our CB's very exposed as happened for their 3rd goal. Perhaps it would be more sensible to only have one FB pushing forward each time, thus allowing the remaining 3 defenders to slide across to cover? Just my 2cents worth.

some of the one touch passing in tight spaces was pretty good last night. not much on the end of it in the final third but a good basis to start from

Unfortunately most of it was by Blacktown!

Golec + J Rose = another long season
Thought both Golec and Josh looked good in patches. Golec needs a few more games under his belt before we can really judge him. If they are not up to it though, there are a few more options.....Ryles and Liam Rose would both do a good job. We do need another LB though.

They did well bit that's giving them way too much credit. We were 'out-physicalled' not 'out-technicalled' I think. Passing looked good and pretty precise much of the time, same with crosses.
But the boys also let themselves get shoved and shouldered out of the way much too easily.

From today's advocate

"Paulo has looked for players that aren't here seeking big money, they are simply seeking great football and a great opportunity" from Shaun

The club is spending more than it had done in a long time, but it would still be the lowest spending club in the A League this season.
"Hopefully our membership, sponsorship and ticket sales are as projected and if those revenue streams go according to plan, then we have the opportunity to react, if we need to, in the January transfer window" from Shaun

My first post for a long time. After watching the FFA cup match the other night, admittedly on a very crappy stream and having a look at the highlights later, I would suggest you could do a lot worse than sign Joey Gibbs as a squaddie.

He was involved in all three goals for Blacktown, laying off a couple of nice passes in the process.

I know he's briefly played in the A League in the past but he looks a much better player now, more mature as a result of his time at the best NPL club in Australia.

I don't think there's anything wrong in doing some recruiting from there, there are some hidden gems out there waiting to be discovered.

He finished better than we could. Say's something.

Seems to me we did not play up to 6 maybe 7 players who will be in the first 11... in the Blacktown game...

Add Glover, Rowles, the two Dutchies, our new striker, plus DDS, push Rosebud to left back and we have a totally different team... whats screams off the page is if we have have a run of injuries to key players hhhhmmm ..

Arguably the most important member of our squad this year will be the fitness coach in keeping our top say 6 players on the park..
