To be fair he doesn't look a lot different to Austin when he first came to us. Speed to burn, gets into great positions.....shame about the delivery. Think it could be a lot about his belief in himself, if TW can motivate him then who knows how good he can get. 2 very good coaches in Poppa and Ernie Merrick have also seen the potential so there must be something there.

Mitch Austin without the delusions of grandeur.

Seems to have good pace and ball control but decision making sorely lacking. Hopefully thats something you can coach. Can't see him getting much game time over Fabio and I would put Trent above him too.

I take your point on Austin but the other side of the above coin, (not to be unfair) is

...... they both cut him loose.

Edit: for all our's sake, I hope he does come good, because the dwindling Ca$h has been spent on him.

To be fair to Tony he is the man who has probably seen the most of Appiah considering he was the one who first brought him to the Mariners NYL side. I would trust his judgement over random Sydney FC fans and a YouTube video of his mistakes.

To be fair, I think your overlooking the fact that anyone with a Foxtel subscription has seen the exact same as what Walmsley’s seen of him in the last 2 seasons at both the Nix & WSW.

And it's these x2 season's that are far more telling than opposed to what he was like as a Youth.

Its not like Poppa & Merrick played him centrally or crazily shoved him in the L/RB roles, they both played him in his preferred position- attacking wide
..... to no avail.

You're only seeing him on game day and in those squads he wasn't given much opportunity to get a consistent run. Tony Walmsley has seen him week in and week out on the training pitch when he was with the NYL Team and also when he trialled with us this season. I think Tony Walmsley has the greatest perspective of Appiah's potential than any other manager. Comparing that to some everyday pundits' opinions and some bloopers in a bloody YouTube video is plain and simple rubbish.

Appiah is so far down the food chain it doesn't really matter if we get nothing out of him.
Injuries or suspension might get him a bench spot.

I know we need more A League class players but what a waste of a spot. Should have used to get CB or RB

Attacking food chain IMO:
O'Donovan - Central
Fab - Right has versatility
Pain - Left
Bingham - Central has versatility
Budgie - Right or Left
Powell - Central
Fletcher - Left or Central
McDonald - Left
Appiah - Right

I agree that we would have been far better off with a defender and that it's fairly unlikely that Appiah will feature this season. But some of the reasoning that he as a player is completely and utterly undeserving of ever having an A-League spot was getting a little absurd.

I'd have it more like this. I think Roy, Connor, Fab and Powell will most likely start. I can see Fletch and Appiah on the bench and the others will get a chance when there are injuries, suspensions etc. Is a fair bit more competitive this season.

To be fair.... Poppa was able to sign him because Tony was saying that he should have another season in NYL before looking at A-league level. So far, he seems to have had the better assessment of A-K of the three of them.
Again, based on the feedback on here, when he went to WSW, it seems like Walmsley was able to get something positive out of him with the youth team and had a plan for how to continue that into the A-league.

Appiah will definately play this year. I wouldn't have signed him, before a staring 11 CB, but remember back to the Grand final win over the drive by's and i was worried about him hurting us.
He is a better player than some are giving him credit for.

"get something out of him"

Bollocks. He ran up and down in straight lines very very fast with no end product.

Same then as now that's why we punted him the 1st time
