I would side with McGlinchey too. After achieving all he needed to with the Mariners, and the A League, he followed the great mentor Arnie to the land of the rising sun for many more dollars. I don't blame him for that. Meanwhile Mike Charlesworth was happy to off load the cost of the wages and began counting the big fat transfer fee. Arnie then returns home after being stitched up by the Japanese; Clarky appears in Sydney's colours looking as if he is wondering how it all went wrong; Vukovic returns from yet another overseas misadventure and poor old WeeMac is left high and dry - dumped by the Japanese and abandoned by the Mariners "he will honour his contract and return on January 1st". What is he supposed to do? Charlesworth really does not want him back because it will put the Mariners over the salary cap; they did not have a plan B in case he returned; and they now expect him to do nothing for six months and then turn up happy as can be as a loyal Mariner. If I was WeeMac I would be doing my utmost to screw the club that is screwing him - the Mariners - and I would be pursuing every legal loophole and calling the PFA for help.

Hold on. Was McGlinchey dumped by the Japanese or did he jump, thinking he could go to the Phoenix? Vegalta's termination notice makes it sound like it was a mutual termination.

If McGlinchey requested the loan termination then this is entirely his fault. The Mariners would have expected him to serve the full term of his loan and would have used the cap space accordingly - if they didn't, there would be people on here complaining about how we weren't making the most of our cap to build a quality team.

Are you seriously telling me you would have kept his cap space open for all of 2014?

Phoenix fan here:
The quotes on stuff say that McGlinchey hasn't talked to the club at all - surely they would have had legal representation contact him? Surely he has contacted the club as well?

Not looking good for anyone at this point depending on your own POV obviously.

One extra thing though... Everyone seems to be all up in arms over the 1st of January thing... The way I took it, reading the article, was that the club wouldn't force him to be back until then, as that is when he's expected... That's quite different to it not wanting him back before then... In the stuff that I've seen sofar, there hasn't been anything to say that we wouldn't take him back right now, if he came wandering over...
In fact, I thought I read a comment last week saying that we'd be happy to have him back now if it can be negotiated, but that could well just be my imagination...

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
so....thats almost the whole GF winning team now,....isnt it ?.......must be only Rosey and Dukes left

Also I love the PFA statement about the Mariners not corresponding with McGlinchey or them about the issue. Doesn't say anywhere that McGlinchey let the Mariners know of his intentions. Any loyal player would have first contacted his club, his coach and his fellow players surely.

What a hypocritical statement!

WARNING: :soapbox:

firstly i would like to acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their own personal butt hurt (ok, "opinions")

(climbs on soapbox)

do we really need to be as disrespectful as some of these posts?

why not reflect on how amazing the "wee man" has been for our football team… the hard work he put in, with potentially tens of thousands of hours of training over the years to serve OUR team, providing countless thrilling moments in his 121 games and MULTIPLE TROPHIES!!! the 7 goal night against sydney should single handedly makes him a club immortal!

(climbs back down)

we are yet to see how this pans out but if he is gone... a man with a young family and maybe 5 or 6 years left of money making ability in his chosen profession decided to do what is in his families best interest and go after a lucrative deal. good for him. Mariners should have been offering for him to return to a marquee spot and more money but we all know that would never happen. As a mariners fan losing one of the best players the aleague has seen in such a pathetic way is disappointing, frustrating and sucks balls, but i wish nothing but the best for micky and say thanks for the memories.

now Central Coast Mariners, i am always the first to leap to their defence when the tide of hate flows, but this one is a very bitter pill to swallow

As I mentioned above, for me, the thing is that currently, it looks like he's stabbed us in the back. God knows plenty of things need to change re. the club management, but right now, it also feels like every problem the clubs lands in, the opposition is given the benefit of the doubt, to the point that the club cops a hammering on forums like here, sometimes without any wrongdoing on their behalf.
You only need to look at some of the comments here and on Facebook, after the mistaken FFA release. The club denied it and seem to be fighting it, yet they actually copped grief for not having managed communications about it better... Communications about something that, in their perception, wasn't going on!?

So, if we're going to be reasonable about it, we probably shouldn't be commenting on this at all, in any direction. But for mine, the last three major pain points that I feel, around the club, are "Bernie, Arnie/Clarkey to SFC, WeeMac", of those three, the club really only has had the potential say in one of them and we don't even really know that yet.

WeeMac has been at best opportunistic. He's had an eye on the exit and found a loophole to escape his contract. He is certainly not without blame.

Think about it from the reverse angle - had the club taken this opportunity to cancel a player's contract by a similar act (the new company not offering a player who maybe wasn't working out a contract similar to what they had been on) there would have been hell to pay.

For the club's part - it smells like a 'clever' move gone awry as someone didn't anticipate this being a likely outcome.

I don't buy this contract and change of ownership stuff.

Mcglinchey has the PFA...Mariners have FIFA!!!

Fifa wins everyday of the week.

Remember bresciano getting banned?

It has to be something else (like others on here have mentioned).
1) we have no roster spot available for him now. (Ps. We definitely have the salary cap space lol...that's not an issue)
2) we can't afford him. We budgeted for life without mcglinchey...this would kill me!
3) we are maintaining that we don't want him back until 2015. Which would be so ridiculously stupid by the mariners!
If 3) is true...then the PFA would win hands down
