On the face of it, looks a strange one. But stop and think…. We’ve screamed for a 2nd natural left back AND competition for fazz to keep him on his toes this whole season (we all know he’s had abit of 2nd season syndrome) and when he’s been out it’s showed a massive deficit in that area.

And then we’ve had 4 RB’s. Storm being our main man there and not many were blown away by Thomas’ contribution, he wasn’t awful just not a world beater.

McGarry was awesome when he was at the nix, shocked he left them tbh. The jets are trash and he’s struggled because of that. I expect he’ll do well here.

Gonna put it out there again... Steele at LB. He looked alright in his short cameo.

He's left footed. Is a solid defender. Can pass. Has more motor than most with the midfield play (I appreciate LB/LWB might be a step up). No he's not a natural but seems a better fit than Storm, Thomas, Hall, whoever has been there.

I haven't been that impressed by McGarry during his time at both the Phoenix and the Jets.

He's very capable going forward, but doesn't know how to defend. There is a reason a 34 year old Jason Hoffman has been playing at left back for the Jets (other than the Jets are shit but that is a contributing factor.)

Talay couldn't teach him how to defend despite two seasons of regular game time. Talay is probably the best in the league at improving players, behind maybe only Monty, and he turfed him for Mauragis despite McGarry being a Kiwi.

Aquilina is a much better and versatile prospect for me and I'm sad we lost him. Without knowing how he fitted in culturally in the club I think Aquilina has a much higher development ceiling. But Monty has earned the trust to make relatively risky signings like this.

Monty now has a solid track record of improving players and seeing potential where others can't. Hopefully we don't regret sending Aquilina down the F3.

It's not that massively affected. Of the starters we've got Cummings & Tulio up front (no change), mids Silvera, Ballard, Nisbet, Nkololo (unchanged), defenders Roux (has started some games already), Kaltak, Triantis, Mcgarry (new - faz injured).

Most of the changes or shuffling we've seen of late are due to injury, or mid last game by suspension, not by choice. There is still a solid core there but we need to get our mojo back.
Yep exactly this for mine.
More disruption by playing players out of position than these acquisitions and departures.

It’s all very interesting and different to what we are used to.

Maybe we recognise we are falling slightly and need to inject new players which can also spark a new confidence, kind of like getting a new coach.

Our confidence on the ball has been resulting in passes unstuck or us trying balls which arent there, hopefully we can get a win on the board and start getting 2 wins out of every 3 games if we can be a bit smarter.

Only a few games in the 1.5 years I’ve been impressed with Monty strategy and structure.
I’m not a fan of the tactics at all HOWEVER it seems in the development, dressing room and training space he is top 2 in the country.

Something I would love to see is Monty, Serge, Talay and Ange start now on training and development of the national team as a collective group!

Talay refuses now to work with football NZ so Monty, Talay and Ange as a super coaching team.

More worried about the amount of time Nectar is out for the U20 World Cup qualifiers. Saw something that said squad gets together or arrives not sure which 20yj Feb and the tournament is 1-20March

Dans chance to play his preferred spot but we are now thin at CB for a month

I would have agreed with you.. and until now have not questioned (really) any of Monty’s signings. But that is a straight 4 now he has either been wrong with or they haven’t worked out for whatever reason .. Ayongo, Kalechi, Ruhs, Aquilina.. and at least 3 of those he was adamant about at the beginning of the season.

I think he can play it riskier with the signings now we have the spine of a good team and probs has. He was dead set on getting Kaltak and that has panned out. I just wonder if the others were not fully scouted but he didn't want to piss and around.

I think the most postive spin that can be put on the swap deal is that it is a clear signal of belief in Sasha Kuzevski from Monty & Sergio. Another positive is McGarry is a match fit player who can step straight into a starting eleven from the day he turns up, maybe Farrell is out for longer than we think?

Kuzevski is now the undisputed back up right back and should benefit from those extra devlopment minutes off the bench or starting when Storm is injured. He is a good player to keep Storm on his toes and probably will surpass him given enough time and looks like he could really benefit from extra game time.

One slight down side is that McGarry takes up a visa spot but with both Kelechi and Ayongo gone I guess that doesn't really matter until next season, which is convieniently when McGarry's deal ends. So maybe this is also just an extended trial to see if Monty can teach him how to defend?
