I know stats aren't everything....but TrasnferMarkt has him with 1 assist in 7 games for the Korean team. He hasn't been getting many minutes...is he injured?
As a centre forward his 1 assist/no goals is close to what our homegrown players do,....so not sure why we would bring in a visa player who was no better than what we have?

103 minutes across 2 games for 0 goals as a CF in Korea.

1621 minutes as a CF across 20 games for 10 goals and 4 assists in Costa Rica first division.

If it is Marco Urena that we’ve managed to sign I think it’s a good pick up. Obviously the lack of goals at previous clubs and then ofcourse any red hot form run. Look at where he’s played, he’s obviously got some pedigree or a very very decent agent.
just watched some goal videos of him and he looks like a one of those classic #9’s that doesn’t get involved in build up, classic poacher.

remember when Roy came, there was no goal scoring record and his CV was dodgy. Urena is a high calibre player for this league and I’m happy to see if he’s found his level here. Ofcourse if he does that he’ll join a rival club next season.....

Social post showing the Costa Rican flag heading to aus.
Cue the Marco Urena announcement.

I actually really like the 3 visa signings, really good quality and intent considering our situation as cellar dwellers. The timing is the things that kills me. With no preseason or fitness regime, I can see how we get the benefit for months.

I always thought that while Asdrubal was average, he never really got a fair crack for the same reason. I hope these 3 don’t go down the same trajectory due to lack of fitness or cohesion with their teammates.

Marcos Ureña joins the Mariners!

Costa Rican World Cup goal scorer Marcos Ureña has joined the Central Coast Mariners for the A-League 20/21 season.

The 30-year-old most recently appeared for South Korea’s Gwangju FC, and will bring with him a swathe of experience from the MLS and European competitions, including UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League appearances with different clubs.

Ureña went to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil with the Costa Rican national team and scored in their 3-1 win over Uruguay in the group stages that year.

He has scored 15 times in 67 appearances for Los Ticos and has played predominantly as a striker although can also be used as an attacking midfielder.

Mariners Head Coach Alen Stajcic welcomed Ureña to the Mariners and said he would be a valuable member of the squad when he joins them after his quarantine period.

“We’re excited to welcome Marcos to the squad for this season, and I believe he can be a valuable contributor to this group,” Stajcic said.

“He brings a wealth of experience and scoring pedigree, including from a World Cup level, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in the A-League.”

“Someone with his football background will prove a big benefit not just on the pitch, but also off the pitch where there is plenty that our young players can learn from him.”

With permission now granted for him to travel to Australia and a 14-day mandatory quarantine period ahead of him, Ureña said he is looking forward to linking up with his new teammates.

“I’m really excited to join the team as soon as possible and start this new experience,” he said.

“Every league has their own style of play and I’m looking forward to seeing how I can help the team in the best way.”

“I have been in different countries playing and have participated in two Youth World Cups and two FIFA World Cup tournaments, so I have a lot of experience at this level.”

“I hope I can help the young players and encourage them to continue their development, and I will share my experience and of course try my best to help the Mariners get better every time I play.”

Ureña’s announcement follows that of other visa players Michal Janota and Stefan Jankovic last week, and the staff and team are now fully focussed on the team’s season opener against the Newcastle Jets on New Year’s Eve at Central Coast Stadium.

Great news! Hopefully he does well for us,

Although, that last paragraph basically states that we won’t be signing anyone else... that leaves us very weak at the back and losing fox and Ziggy without adequately replacing them. Yes we have hall and nigro now but they are just squad players at best, we severely lack experience in the backline and it will cost us big time.

Could just mean we are done for Visa signings.

Agree. Between the lines it says don’t expect anyone else. This new attack will have to be potent and midfield excellent to give us any real chance at success. And by success I mean not 12th.

Great summary FP. It is something I call football brain. Messi is the best I have seen with it. It is why I have been so impressed with Nisbett. Kwassy even had it when he trusted his instincts rather than thinking about it.
It is a talent that in many sports that separates the good from the truly great. The players who have it seem to have more time even though they may be slower than their lass gifted teammates.
I could go on, however I think you have described it well.
Unfortunately, I am sure it is something that cannot be taught. But as you rightly say he has skills. He can be an asset if he can be trained to beat one, then get his head up and pass.
Yeah Messi is literally a genius imo when it comes to football.

Well written and some good points. I hope he proves you wrong (......sitting up in the Prawn munching seats with Ancient for a couple of games gave me a different perspective and crystallized what was wrong with his game and i was vocal about it on here....... but quality cant be taught and he has it already) but if he doesnt it will certainly be nice to have that calibre of player sitting on the bench to hopefully come on and make something happen.
Haha, yeah, I hope he proves me wrong too. But I think he's capable of playing a role and having a good season, I'm just not convinced he can dictate a game and consistently do what you need from a number 10.

Front 3 is sorted with decent cover.

Does anyone know if the mystery player we were looking to get with the funds freed up by Ziggys departure is a thing?

My understanding was that the 3 visa players were already sorted long before the Ziggy fiasco.

I was led to believe that Ziggy was released in order to facilitate funds for someone else
