Central Coast Mariners coach Alen Stajcic admits there are no excuses for the A-League battlers next season, saying he has all the resources he needs to turn them into a competitive force.

Stajcic is close to locking in his full contingent of visa players, with versatile Scottish defender Ziggy Gordon the latest recruit brought to the club by the former Matildas boss.

The return of Daniel De Silva, who was on loan at Sydney FC last season, is another important piece of the puzzle. De Silva was keen on another season under Steve Corica but the Mariners are his parent club and it appears Stajcic pulled rank.

"I was keen to keep him as well, he was a Central Coast player, I had meetings with him and expressed how keen I was to have him in our team and for him to be a key and pivotal part of our team," Stajcic said.

"He's a wonderful technician, exactly the kind of player I want in our attacking midfield role - creative, great technique and an ability to pick apart defences. Everyone knows, he's been that kid we've been talking about for a long time, since he was 16 or 17 at Perth Glory as a potential world-class No.10.

You're not going to hear any excuses from me about our lack of resrouces or facilities or even funding.

Alen Stajcic
"I've seen him play over the years, he's a wonderful player ... he's going to really start to fulfil his potential and be a key player for us moving forward."

De Silva may not be the only player prised away from the Sky Blues by the Mariners, with Stajcic also believed to be keen on young gun Ryan Teague, who is captain of the Australian under-16s.

Stajcic said he has wanted for nothing since joining Central Coast, whose majority owner Mike Charlesworth is regularly criticised by fans for a perceived failure to invest in the club.

"I know what my budget is and we've worked within that budget. It is what it is," Stajcic said. "The good thing about working with Mike and at the Mariners, everything's been transparent right from the start.

"A lot of people have given the Mariners stick over the last few years in the general public but the facilities we have up there for training, the resources we have at our disposal are second to none. You're not going to hear any excuses from me about our lack of resources or facilities or even funding."

Looks a decent, if budget, signing. Some pros and cons with him:

Pros:
Played 111 games in the Scottish top flight.
Has played overseas before.
Has played for the Scottish U19s.
Played 40 games in the Scottish top flight in the past season.
Good age (26).
Former Scottish second division team of the year member.
Probably cheap considering we were a backup option after Dinamo Bucharest backed out.

Cons:
Part of the second worst defence in the Scottish Premiership last season.
Only played a total of 23 games over two seasons in Poland in his last foreign venture.
Said he felt like "I was a fish out of water. I was so behind" playing in Poland.
Was going to join Dinamo Bucharest over us but a change in manager stopped that at the last second.

Looks a pretty good signing, has played a lot in recent times in a good league. Only real concern is how the Scottish Premier League compares to the A-League, it seems like it is a similar quality considering how many games Garuccio and Bozanic play there in a team that finished a lot higher than Gordon's Hamilton. So maybe a slight worry that we are signing someone who played in the worst defence in a league that is a pretty similar quality to the A-League? Though considering he has had regular interest from overseas in his career https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/ziggy-gordon-bizarre-turn-events-16488674, including stating that he had offers from England as well as from Dinamo Bucharest before signing with us. I don't think Stajcic would have signed him without a good reason and proper scouting so hopefully he does well.

They're going to have to make sure he plays on the shaded side of the pitch for the early kickoffs.

Not sure if this is the whole article. Sometimes the outline site doesn't work that well.

The Central Coast Mariners are poised to tie up a quartet of foreign signings within days, including a Scottish fullback and the Korean duo on trial with the club in the wake of drink-driving convictions in their homeland.

Defender Ziggy Gordon will join from Scottish Premier League side Hamilton Academicals, after his planned move to Dinamo Bucharest fell through in recent days and he rejected the chance to play a second spell in Poland.

Meanwhile Korean pair Kim Eun-sun and Lee Sang-ho will be offered contracts once FIFA and the K-League confirm that they are eligible to sign in the wake of being sacked by their Korean clubs late last year for drink-driving offences.

I’m happy with this, good age coming into his prime years, good enough pedigree. Specialist RB that can play CB. Not world beater but he’s what we need a hard c**t red head Scottish fullback.

Unfortunately this will rule out Jesse Curran coming back.
And 100% looks like the Korean boys will be locked in which is fantastic. Pretty frustrating that because it’s us, the media focus on their DUI issues. Yeah mention it, but focus on the reason they’re here.
With this kind of smart import recruiting Staj is doing it makes mulveys f**k up of signing wee mac for 2 years even more horrendous.

I wonder if Nicky Ajose is still on our radar?

I also like that by the vibe of that article, Staj has been a stern f**ker with DDS. Hopefully that leads to him pulling his head in and performing well again.

Central Coast Mariners to sign Scottish fullback Ziggy Gordon and Korean DUI duo

Mariners boss Alen Stajcic also hopes to bring in a fourth visa player by the end of next week, as he moves quickly to overhaul his squad in the wake of yet another failed season.

The DUI duo have impressed enough at training for the club to move quickly to sign them, having satisfied themselves that their misdemeanours were isolated incidents.

“They're doing very well, they've been embraced by the group and they've performed well at training,” Stajcic said. “A decision is imminent but they've done very well. We've done our due diligence so we'll see how we go.

“We've just come to (another) agreement so hopefully that comes to fruition with a player from the Scottish Premier League (Gordon).

“Then we have one more visa player who we've also come to agreement with and hopefully we can get all that finalised by the end of next week.”

The Mariners have also made a significant offer to Sydney FC and Australian U20 captain Ryan Teague, and have confirmed the return to the Sky Blues of winger Danny de Silva after the expiry of his loan there.

“Danny's a fantastic player,” said Stajcic. “He's been the kid we're all talking about for a long time since he was 16 or 17 at Perth.

“I've seen him play over the years and he's a wonderful player who hasn't had the consistency of being a starting player for a long time.

“I know that given good preparation and a lot of game time, he'll start to fulfil his potential.”

DDS, Judas and Simon are the deadwood sucking up our cap and we have a year to go with them before they can be punted.
Shabow is also dead wood but he has another year too.
Arguably, thats close to $500k on players who add nothing to the squad and suck positivity out of it.
Im happy to wait a season (regardless of where we finish) until Staj can dump the toxic dead wood

The way it was written gave me the impression that we want him back here playing regularly and that’s good for him and us, but if he decides to carry on like a pork chop we’re bringing in other players that can carry on without him.

I agree
But with DDS, it’s all mentality with him. I still hate how he treated our club, I hate that we’re stuck with him. But of the 4 deadwoods, if DDS has his head pulled in, he is the one that can turn into a positive again. So Staj has to make the most of him this season. We’ll find out early regardless of which way DDS goes.
I love what matty means to our club, but he is past it. He can’t be a starter. He should do his badges and maybe become a coach in the academy or something. Wee Mac has to retire, but won’t.

To be fair, if you were Judas on his $$ why would you respect the club asking you to leave? He has to jog along the sidelines for a bit and collect his cash.
Easy money and the last decent contract the little c**t will get
