Think been near his family was a factor. He is a Brizzy boy.
A lot of his family are in Sydney, especially his Grandmother, who helped raise him. One would hope that CCM are part of those discussions, seeing as we know what sort of player and person he is.

Ditching us for the roar? I'd get it if they didnt suck as much as us last season. That one is tough to swallow after we all thought fair enough he wants to go back to the UK.
Well, he's going back to his home town, so I get that. Does the player have any say about loan deals? If he does & says no, would that damage his ongoing career in the UK? It's probably better he gets playing minutes than splinters in his bum. Granted that champion players rarely make top coaches, I would think he'd still learn much from Fowler.

Fowler is probably seen as more qualified by Burnley as well, considering we no longer have Phelan we don't have any real credibility within the English system.

To be honest you cannot blame any player for not wanting to be at the Mariners.
Going to most clubs that's fair enough but going to the roar you're gambling heavily on their rebuild which is a huge shake up with an unproven coach (thats my understanding I could be wrong), their money issues weren't that long ago and then there was this gem https://www.foxsports.com.au/footba...s/news-story/b003856909ae1a274cf13c9910b25400

If it was me I'd also be wary of the nix being gutted and possibly Adelaide who has some changes going on with Goodwin and Isais leaving. I don't think there would be as much surprise if it were a more consistent and cashed up club like WSW or Victory but the roar?

Still waiting for the club to show any sign of life, at this point I'm not convinced that we're not dead in the water.

A little bit absurd that our coaching staff went on vacation, after only being in the job a short time.
The players have to have a break so there is no one to coach. They can do the recruiting from home. Pretty sure that doesn’t stop.

I wouldn’t be to worried. I get your thoughts but everyone at all clubs will be in same boat

Another possibility with Aiden is we were in the conversation but they were willing to pay more for him. Fowler has made it clear he wants to use his connections to get the edge with Visa players so decent Australian players that fill the gaps could be at a premium.

With the losses of Millar, O'Neill, Aspro, Hiariej, Pain and Karacan, I am yet to see any evidence that our player quality will be any better than last season. Those losses are a sizable gap to have us on par from last season, even with a change in coach.

Yeah that makes sense, I just hope we are using the time productively!

They will pay more than CCM.

Stajcic has some big gaps to fill, and with how diabolical our recruitment has been in the past few years that is pretty worrying.

Looking at the players we have signed, Gallifuoco seems to be a like for like replacement of McGing, time will tell if he is a better player than McGing was. Gallifuoco is far less experienced at senior level than McGing was but has a better pedigree and reputation. However, the majority of senior experience that Gallifuoco has also arguably comes at a lower level the A-League, in the English Conference and Serie C with only 10 games in the A-League, plus a handful in the FFA Cup and Asian Champions League . If Gallifuoco is our replacement for any of Millar/O'Neill/Aspro/Hiariej/Karacan than I think our squad is weaker, at least on paper.

Tongyik looks to be a replacement for Golec/Cisse/Aspro, he honestly seems like a weaker signing than even than Golec and Cisse. While he did well early on with City, well enough to make the bench of the PFA team of the season, he hasn't shown anything in a long time and is coming off a long injury lay off, if he is more than a backup than it's time to be worried.

I'm expecting him to be a backup. With his recent history of being released there's no way we should be over paying for him and can't see him being upset at being a bench player while he works on getting back to his best. A two year deal gives him stability and a chance to put his best foot forward and be part of our first team plans for next year if he can find the required form. Can't see him being worse than Cisse or Golec were for us, both were terrible - and that hurts to say with how well liked Golec was the previous season.

Early bird memberships are supposed to open today, I really thought we'd get a bit of news to go with it and generate some buzz but hey I'm no marketing expert. Maybe there's still time, the link in the members email goes to a placeholder at the moment.

Isn't Staj on leave till the 24th? It's very hard to make an assessment of his recruiting when he hasn't done any. Chill people chill.

I think we all realise this.

However there only eight maximum signings to come and they all need to be better quality than the six names I have mentioned just to be ahead of last season. Far better quality if we want to be competitive week in week out.

This is where the concern is coming from.

Have low expectations and you'll never be disappointed. After 5 years of garbage time I can't set my expectations any higher than last season.

I do think there will be some poor teams this coming season - including roar.

I am confident Staj is a genuinely decent coach - but if recruitment doesn't end up being at least encouraging 'dead in the water' could be a fairly a good description for where we're going.

I do think Staj can take a below average team (on paper) to a be mid-table competitive. That's all I'm asking for this season.
