Mariners Squad - 2019-2020

But oh the roar we made.

Seriously though. The club needs to understand, and I’m guessing this goes for many of us, that this about more than just keeping a quality player. (And the below applies to some others also).

Kids in particular, but all team fans need heroes. And when we have so many new faces year to year and then combined with the underperforming and low resources etc its so much harder for people to feel that passionate tribal connection that you want from any good fan base. Pretty hard to generate water cooler talk about a swathe of new average players who haven’t really done anything yet. You have to be able to generate excitement and enthusiasm that travels beyond Bolt style hype, And people buy based on emotion.

The Entertainment dollar is a highly competitive space and to rebuild the club and grow our fan base we desperately need consistent faces and some fan favourites to rally around and be enthused by between games and in off season too.

Milan is quality on field and the little I’ve heard him speak he seems an exemplary professional too.

No doubt other clubs are already making hard plays for him. We need to win this one imo. Show our fans that we can keep our talent and have a commitment to not just the future of developing players but also in keeping the visa signings we actually get right.

And there’s the “visa players need time to adjust” theory. If that’s true, then why would we want to go back to square one with another player next season?

No, put a 3 year deal in front of him and give him and his family the certainty to make a deal with us too hard to refuse. My reasoning is at his age most clubs may be able to outbid us in the short term but they will only be willing to offer him a 2 year deal. But if you can’t tell he’s easily got what it takes to play in the A league until he’s 35, then imo you don’t deserve a player of his quality.
Exactly players you want to put on the back of your shirt

I suspect that even if the original sentiment was true (speculative) that whoever might have thought should easily have changed his mind by now...

Duric is clearly worth fighting to keep.

Duric got a standing ovation and he is one of the few players we have had over the last few years that other teams and commentators are genuinely envious of.
Couldn't agree more. I feel as if Tom H and Milan are the 2 players we've had over this period that other team's fans have actually wanted to have in their side. Milan has goals over Tommy H though so he's the 1 getting more plaudits. I believe he's the same as Davila in Wellington, both have been outstanding and would be getting talked about much more if they were at a Syd/Melb club.

I think Kim >> Tommy. He has more energy and is far more physical. Kim is one of those footballers who you dont notice until they arent there (The Sterjovski effect, we were better when he played even if he did very little). We need to keep him fit at all costs and on the park.
Milan has that rare ability to play between the lines and that creates chances and thats why we need to resign him. Lets face it we have deadwood cap space getting freed up at the end of the season so the money will be there

If we spend all of Simon and Mcglincheys wages on topping up Kim and Duric to keep them, I genuinely think that would be money well spent. We don't need to replace them...

Could maybe loose Kye and DDS over January to under 23 AFC cup which also acts as the Olympic qualifiers.

Arnold has said he wants to use overseas players but that’s looking like around 8-10. That leaves another 12-14 to come from the A league

Looks like DDS will be injured in January

Unfortunately that would mean he has to sit games out, they already made players do that for missing the last international games. Meanwhile the suspended players were free to play which seems counter intuitive. Good chance of them both getting a call up but we should be prepared for that possibility and if the other parts are clicking I would hope we can get through that time.

Speaking of Wee Mac, his invisibility on the bench and injury/team sheet was odd...might be time for him to hit the Indian Superannuation League ATM ...I mean if David Williams can be whacking them in for ATK , wee mac have a few still left in him for the game pace over there

Yeah absolutely and our seasons have really fallen apart over the Christmas season including killing Okon’s team which was looking promising until Christmas

Hopefully we have them back by the 25/1 as we have a few games from then against lower table clubs that we need to put away to get some distance on the bottom of the ladder.

actually it looks like the final is on 26/1 so should have them back for the following game even if we go all the way.

Knowing where the “Duric is too old” rumour originated, I wouldn’t put too much stock into it.
Whilst I get why you say that PP, I was also there when it was said to be fair to that individual.

The inference was that the club wasn’t in a rush to re-sign Milan and mention was made of him being older next season and possibly injury-prone. Now they may be valid points but if the club truly has learned its lessons of the recent past, they should at least have offered Duric another year around the time they announced Sammy and Gianni. That would have locked him in and prevented a raid by another club whilst probably allowing a deal close to his original one price-wise. Imagine him scoring say 10 goals this season with a smattering of worldies amongst them, what would his contract value be after that?

C’mon CCM, surely he has already shown enough of his capabilities to lock him down, at least for another year or even two?

Hopefully this all happens quickly enough to stop us all worrying unnecessarily.

The whole Milan is too old thing is just flat out strange to me. Jair is only 8 months younger than him and most of the best players in this league are in their 30's. Ninkovic, Castro, Fornaroli etc.

That’s mostly because we can’t afford those players until they’re on the other side of 30. If Anton has discovered a secret stash of players in their mid - late 20s that are of the same quality and within budget then go for it. But if you don’t have a better option in mind sign Duric up again. If we can’t afford him now then just be straight up about it.

Castro particularly is late 30s isn't he? I certainly wouldn't say Castro is too old.

Castro is 37 and still going strong. This honestly could be his last season but i'm sure no one has told him you're finished coz you're too old.
You’re not too old until one day all of a sudden you are. Then again Berisha looked done before he went to Japan and then barely played and he looks better now.
