Mariners Preseason 2019

Found it hard to track who was who after the bulk changes and you could see how it disrupted us. Murray made an obvious impact though and if we intend on playing a sole striker I think he showed tonight why he deserves the first shot at it. Majok put his hand up too, both were able to make threatening runs off others and bring others in to the attack as well. They had more impact and more entertainment value than looking to poach something at the back post and lurking up front.

Overall it was a good hit out and apart from 1 or 2 incidents we weren`t really tested.
Unfortunately, after that display I don`t think we`ll see much of Matty this season.
Although I`m not completely sold on Murray ,on tonights performance ,he has to be our starting forward with Majok on the bench.

Staj has a multitude of options in the midfield. Kim being the standout,Oar,DDS,Duric and Silvera will do a great job for us.
Melling and Nizzy are good back-ups but Nizzy may just take the bench spot
Ziggy at rb has that position covered.
With GG and Tonyik out Rolwes is a solid back-up cb with Clisby taking the lb spot.
Thus (as we`ve been saying all along) our problem spots will be the rcb position, striker and keeper as we don`t have quality cover there.

The revelation though tonight, (for me), was Matt Hatch.
I think he has a great future, very fast, good balance and ball control.
He tracks back , breaks up the play and puts in intelligent crosses.
By the end of the season he will probably be in the starting 11

General notes:

* Was cold.
* Good first half, the second half side looked a lot more disjointed.
* We're not a complete side, CB and striker remains the worry, but we have some real quality in the side. Kim and Silvera were my standouts as well as Hatch in the 2nd half.
* Weston really went after Silvera and he was carving them up. Showed he's tough. Always moving. Finds the ball. And makes things happen. Will be exciting to watch him link with Duric and Kim.
* Good hit out because Weston were clearly playing for home town pride and gave no quarter. Given no injuries, it''s a better hit out than playing a soft slow paced match against a cautious HAL side like our warm ups last year which gave us a false impression of our level imo.
* Clearly have more midfield depth than last year, and also up front - though I worry we still don't have the double digit striker we need.

Players:

* Majok and Murray both did well. Different style players. Murray is calm, intelligent and a quality finisher. Majok can beat defenders and create goals like that second one, high work rate, and his general link play and speed was the better of the two. Will be a good battle between these two this year - which is great. Both look superior to Matty. And yet it seems to be Matty's spot to lose.
* Matty made a great run and received a terrific ball over the top, was behind Weston's back line, but was then too slow to turn that golden opportunity into even a shot. HAL defenders will only be faster. That and his usual hard work sums it up sadly. His assist for Murray's 1st was a good knock on, but to be honest, was also just lucky it fell to the right area while their LB was also out of position. Duric is a better pen taker.
* I thought Shabow had some good moments, but I'm still not convinced he's HAL level yet.
* DDS some nice touches and link play. A player who looks like more minutes, and greater understanding of his team mates is important to get him to full potential.
* Oar similar, but is already getting sharper and having more impact.
* Weemac, just does the minimum. We need more imo.
* Melling only made one ludicrously bad pass. But he's obviously not an RB.
* Was it Miller or Stesness late in the second half who nearly gave a couple away? Anyway, unsurprisingly, CB was clearly our weak spot tonight.
* Birra not tested but looked composed.
* Pearce... terrible opening which had me sending prayers of gratitude to the football gods we have Birra. After that he was mostly fine.
* Nisbet - standard high quality dependable play. Better without Weemac beside him who takes no responsibility.
* Moric - strong and great work rate, but nothing else stood out.
* Hatch was excellent. Great runs and overlapped brilliantly. Need to see him when required to defend more to truly weigh him up though.

Miller was the one that looked shaky at the back. Hatch was very good. I watched him the other week in an Academy game and he just moves so deceptively quickly. Wouldn't surprise me if he becomes another scholarship player.

Another high quality CB and we will be looking good.

The striking position is more problematic. For one thing a top flight striker costs big money. I'm pretty sure that Murray will be a double digit striker if deployed correctly (a lot nearer 10 than 20 though). That may be sufficient if we have enough other contributors. In Arnies first year we scored 50 goals in 30 games. Matt Simon was our Golden Boot with 11. However 15 different players scored that year. Scoring at the same rate as that year we would be looking at 43 goals from 26 games. If Murray can get to 13 do we have another 30 goals in us from the rest of the squad. If the answer is no then a more expensive striker may be needed.

Matty was poor again, unfortunately. Murray 2 chances 2 well taken goals and great movements off the ball. Matty just doesn’t offer us much in an attacking sense anymore so Murray must be starting.
Majok was good, IF he stays consistent through the next 2 months I’m happy for him to be the LW starter. Same with Silvera on the other side. But we need one more natural winger now inghams gone.
Hatch was excellent and is exactly the reason why I’m a massive advocate of having youth back ups in certain positions.
Tommy continued his good form from Maitland but shabow was poor and was the reason the midfield wasn’t as fluid and dynamic imo.

Surely Oar is the LW starter with DDS and Duric in the middle in front of Kim? Silvera is staking a claim to RW and if Majok can cover wing or striker that’s a decent bench inclusion and likely to get reasonable minutes.

Ah yes ofcourse, i’d forgotten about Duric briefly when I posted

Staj can see the players as well as we can. He must recognise similar patterns and even more when coupled with training. I suspect the next few friendlies might see us *put minutes into the legs* of alternate strikers rather than Matty and we'll see where that goes

I'm feeling much better after seeing some of the skill and combinations from the first 11 on the pitch. At full strength we'll have a decent side come season start

Ziggy on the commentary was great and very informative. He'll definitely end up in the media after he retires.

Sounds like Staj is smashing them fitness-wise and our foreigners seem to feel the training is high quality and high intensity. Asking the foreigners is the way because they have the comparative experience our locals don't.

I heard the Weston RB after the game, was saying how Hatch was just way too quick for him.

Good reasoning on the strike rate. But I don’t think we will have the dominance of general play that we had under Arnie and goal scoring CB’s like Patty are almost unicorn rare, so i think it’s unlikely we’ll be scoring as many across the squad. Which is why striker is still a concern. Hard to see Matty getting 10 plus again. (And if he does, then a better striker would probably have had double). Murray maybe. Really hope everyone’s proven right about him. But I still think he’s a striker that falls on the easier end of the spectrum to mark out of games.
