Mariners Pre-season

News from down Canberra way:

"Mariners looking to return to Capital for Pre-Season camp

Capital Football, in conjunction with the Belconnen United Football
Club, is confident of attracting the Hyundai A-League's Central Coast
Mariners for their annual pre-season camp in the national capital
again this year.

Following a premature exit for the Asian Champions League last night,
the Mariners are looking to return to Canberra for a pre-season camp
to include fixtures against Belconnen United and an ACT Premier
League select team.

Both Capital Football and Belconnen United FC entered into agreements
with the Mariners two years ago which sees the region become a
"feeder club" for promising footballers in return for community
appearances by the Mariners.

"We are very confident that the Mariners will be here in July for
preseason training and games and we will be working on a joint
arrangement with Belconnen United and Capital Football hosting the
Mariners, as part of our agreement with the Mariners and also
Belconnen has an agreement with them as well," Capital Football CEO
Heather Reid said.

"We are aiming for a game against Belconnen at McKellar Park on the
11th of July and then a game against a Capital Football All-Star team
for the 12th."

"The game on the 12th we are aiming to have that at the AIS athletics
track, to tie in with the opening of the 19th McDonald's Kanga Cup."

Along with the two fixtures in July, it's anticipated that the
Mariners will continue their strong community engagement with a
number of activities being planned during their time in Canberra for
both Belconnen United and the McDonald's Kanga Cup.

Belconnen will be organising some clinics and we will have players
and Lawrie McKinna being available on Sunday at the Kanga Cup,
Belconnen are planning a dinner with Lawrie McKinna and the players
on the Friday night, so it will be three or four days of Mariners
activities around town.

At this time, there's no further information about possible 2009/10
Hyundai A-League fixtures at Canberra Stadium involving the Central
Coast Mariners however the ACT Government continues to "working very
hard to bring two A-League games to Canberra featuring the Mariners,
in September and October."

Perhaps a substitute for the late lamented Orange trip ... probably colder though!

Just to get back to the crux of this thread. Can someone let me know if the Mariners are playing any preseason trials/friendlies soon? There's nothing about the preseason on the official website at present. Cheers!

The only pre-season stuff I've heard of is the occasional game against Lightning.

Perth have Wolves
Roar have Celtic
Gold Coast have Fulham
Sydney have been playing weekly games against Premier League teams, and are in talks with Boro (has anyone heard anymore on this since it was announced?).
I don't know about, Melbourne, Fury or Adelaide....anyone else know?

Sydney vs Fury @ Shark Park on the 27th of June. They're pumping advertisements as Fowler to play. SFC are giving the Cronulla Sharks 50,000 in the gate takings to keep them afloat.

Will be attending.

Brosque Hits Quick Hat-Trick

SYDNEY FC swept aside Sydney Tigers with what could be the quickest hat-trick in club history for Alex Brosque tonight.

Persistent rain didn't stop more than 3,300 fans from turning out at Leichhardt's Lambert Park, and it didn't affect  Brosque who proved unstoppable, finding the net three times inside the first ten minutes.

Brosque's first came shortly after kick off when he volleyed sweetly from a well-timed Adam Casey cross, and he was in again a few minutes later, punishing the Tigers' keeper for an error by firing a curling shot into the back of an empty net, from distance.

The 25-year old was clearly in a class of his own, and when young striker, Chris Payne skilfully beat two defenders before laying the ball off, Brosque was on target with the finish to collect his third.

After the initial onslaught, the Tigers began to play their way into the game, but Sydney FC looked fit and composed, and despite failing to add to their advantage before the break, they were in control of the contest.

The second half saw the injection of striker John Aloisi and the marquee man looked sharp in his first hit out of the pre season.

The 33-year old came close with a header during his 30 minute stint, but in the end there was no addition to the half time score.

After delivering their best performance yet for new coach Vitezslav Lavicka, the Sky Blues will play the fourth match of their packed pre season program next week against the Northern Tigers.

The clash with the State Super League side will be played next Wednesday night at Mills Park in Asquith.

Apparently new signing Kisel is the goods.

Mariners kick off pre-season assault

The Central Coast Mariners will begin their quest for Hyundai A-League 2009/10 silverware later this week when the current playing group regroups briefly for a whistle-stop tour of Brisbane and central Queensland.

Although the Mariners are at bare bones for their upcoming hit outs against Queensland State League challengers Logan United and Hyundai A-League newcomers the North Queensland Fury, the yellow and navy will take the opportunity to trial several potential new faces ahead of season five.

Maltese international-in-waiting John Hutchinson, Qantas Young Socceroo custodian Andrew Redmayne and injured strike pairing Dylan Macallister and Matt Simon headline those unavailable for selection, meaning the Mariners squad will be bolstered by no less than six triallists five from abroad including two Serbians, one Welsh youth international, an Englishman and an Italian.

Following their upcoming matches in Brisbane and Rockhampton, the Mariners will resume their holiday period before commencing full preparations for the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 in late June.

"This trip provides us with a valuable opportunity to have a look at some players that may well be capable of stepping up to the Hyundai A-League next season, as well as providing a platform for our existing playing group to gain some base fitness and form ahead of the new campaign," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"During our break to date weve been exhaustively looking at all options available to us to bolster our playing squad for the new season and negotiations with several players are ongoing and progressing very encouragingly.

"In the spirit of the need for us to refresh our playing stocks, every squad member on show in Brisbane and Rockhampton has an opportunity to either push their claims for a starting eleven berth or, for a chance to wear Mariners colours in the Hyundai A-League and were hopeful and confident of taking many positives away from this trip.

"We thank our friends in Brisbane and Rockhampton for their assistance in putting this tour together and hope that all who are in attendance at Clem Jones Field and Jardine Park enjoy the respective football spectacles on offer."
