Mariners 2012 AFC Champions League megathread

can someone please explain why we wasted our 2 late corners by playing them short? Against a Japanese side I'd have put at least of them (probably both)...especially with dutchy lurking...sure our corners weren't very good, but law of averages?
And the short corners were of no use to such a quick team like the Japs...they were lightning, closed us down. I would have rather tried and knock a ball into the box...

But apart from that...I'd say easily our best ACL performance!
Also our best performance for a long time...Brisbane and Wellington should be scared if we play like that!

PS. Hearfield getting the start was probably a reward for his patience this season. But clearly not lone striker material (and still not good enough for our startng XI)

If we are playing a lone striker up front it should be a striker. What I noticed last night was a lack of runs up front, in the first half a lovely cross from the right with Rojic about 10 mins too late on the far post and no follow up to the shot made by Rojic which the keeper spilled. Both Bozanic and Hearfield had flat footed and were not following it in.

We must have at least one qualified, licenced striker playing up front. At the moment that means either Kwas or Bernie. I think Kwassie is a better poacher and Bernie is better coming off the bench. It would have been interesting to have had Matty Simon on the pitch last night.

It will be interesting to see what formation Arnie puts in against Wellington who have seen much more of our play than Asian teams have.

I thought Amini had his best game for a long time which may have been helped by an extra body behind the striker. Maybe an argument for 4411.

Tianjin Teda drew with Seongnam 1-1 in the other group match last night so everyone is now on 2pts after 2 rounds. It is very open and we have everything to play for.

We are confirmed at least a play-off for an ACL spot for next years ACL

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/football/champions-league-door-opens-but-phoenix-still-on-outer-20120322-1vmto.html

The champagne corks haven't popped, but both Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane Roar deserve to be celebrating regardless of the outcome of their titanic battle for the Premier's Plate on Sunday. After last weekend's results in the penultimate round, both clubs have already qualified, at worst, for a play-off spot in the 2013 Asian Champions League. That's because the AFC this week confirmed Australia will again get 2½ spots in the ACL next year - one spot is reserved for the minor premiers, one spot for the grand final winners and the half spot is for the team which finishes next-best on the home-and-away ladder. That means the race is now on for the third spot between the remaining finalists, with the exception of Wellington Phoenix. A-League boss Lyall Gorman, who's been in Kuala Lumpur at AFC meetings this week, reaffirmed the Phoenix remain ineligible for the ACL, saying: ''Everyone recognises the benefit of having Wellington in the A-League because New Zealand doesn't have it's own professional competition. But the AFC maintains the only pathway for the Phoenix to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup [open to the winners of the ACL] is through Oceania. That's not going to change.''

::)

Your pessimism get's old fast Nathan. And your regular patronising of others even more so.
I am hardly Robinson Crusoe in that regard. The majority of posts on this forum could be classified as insulting, pessimistic, sarcastic or rude. There are the ocassional well thought out, informative and passionate post. I find some of your posts quite good.

Excellent. I'll put you down as a + 1 for the march then ;D

Your right, it's a forum and like all of us, it's far from perfect. But in fairness, compared to every other supported football forum I've visited... Honestly it's like Plato's football academy in here.

I imagine for someone who is significantly better informed than most, a forum must often be a very frustrating and or laughable place. You see this phenomenon everywhere and your probably biting your tongue as often as not. But it would b great if you could be one of the people who consistently looks past that, because having intelligent informed people around the forum is obviously of real value.

At the moment however, to me at least, and I am not trying to have a dig at you, you come across as having a jaded or pessimistic edge to many of your posts? It makes it harder to take onboard your point of view, and obviously goes against the grain on a "supporters" forum. That may not be you intent. But as they say, communication is the response you get.

Or it may be you intent. I don't know. And of course you can/will do whatever you want. But if so it's obviously just going to lead to conflict around here.

Best

Yes hate the short corner. Nagoya had a good technique regarding the second chance at the corner when the ball is cleared. We could learn from that.

I just saw Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma's logo on Fox Sports...

Pink flying horses? We've got no chance against that...

Who is the commentator on the ACL highlights and internet stream? He's such a cack. English is his second language and I only wish football ranked as highly in his sports. I feel a spoof video coming on.
