Marinators songs

I too have been thinking about having Yellow by Coldplay as a Marinators chant..

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah, they were all yellow

I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called yellow

So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah, your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know, you know I love you so
You know I love you so

I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do

Cos you were all yellow
I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know for you
I'd bleed myself dry for you
I'd bleed myself dry

It's true, look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do

Simple. Effective. Nearly everyone knows this song and its words love it or hate it. Also highly spiritually motivating.

No offence to those who approve of "all stand together" but i find the words can possibly be difficult to learn, read, remember and sing all at the same time and puts it to risk of people just saying "ah f**k it" and being a total flop.

If we went with "all stand together" the only people to approve and heavily push this song onto the coast crowd would be the Marinators. We would all (hopefully) know the words to push this song but really, how many songs with more than two words have caught on in the surrounding bays or the stadium?

Im not pushing the whole Yellow song, but im just saying the advantage of picking a song with preset, simple lyrics that universally apply to the mariners and the love of the game might be better than a made up song from us.

Also "Forever Blowing Bubbles", "Oh i do like to be beside the seaside" are simple songs that existed years before the clubs and their fans that sung them knew these songs well from their childhood.

Whatever song it is, its needs to be simple, melodic and easy to sing.

Dont forget, last night 2 or 3 times the "lets go Mariners" chant was started in Bay 16 FFS!!! Thankfully it died of shame as no one wanted to humiliate themselves to that extent but lets not run before we can walk eh??

I believe it needs to be well known song (copyright issues of course) and can be totally unrelated to the game itself.

That probably means a ballad not a rock song TBH.

highly agree.

Here's one from left field. How about "I am sailing" by Rod Stewart??? Let me explain. Rod Stewart is a massive football fan and wanted to write a song that could be sung in the terraces. He said that Sailing was such a song. The other aspect is that we are Mariners... sailors! We should encourage the nautical aspect of our "heritage". Give the song a listen and image how cool it would be to have the stadium singing it. It would sound like a hymn and would bring a tear to a glass eye!

Im all for the nautical theme. It just needs to be short, rythmic and get peoples passion flowing.

As long as you dont mind me singing the Fulham version, Spurs supporters singing their version etc etc etc.

I maintain we need to move away from traditional football songs

This doesn't make sense to me. Why can't we all sing the Mariners version??? Your comment makes me think of all that was bad with the old NSL. Lets move on!

Wow, what a constructive and well worded post - brilliant stuff you must have worked on it for hours.

FACT - I went to 1 NSL game in my whole life and vowed never to return as the product was so awful

FACT - Neither FFC or Spurs played in the NSL (to the best of my knowledge but maybe you know better)

The freakin point of this entire thread is to discuss options for a song. Not a chant (which sailing  is).

Simple really. Can we now move on with some constructive posts please?

Let me explain myself a little better. Your comment about singing the "Fulham version" of Sailing as opposed to the "Spurs version" suggested to me that there is still some division amongst supporters of the Mariners based on loyalties to overseas clubs. Will you refuse to sing if it's not the Fulham version? Am I suggesting that you abandon those loyalties? Absolutely not. All I did suggest is that we all unite to sing the Mariners version. One of the problems with the NSL was the cultural supporter base which alienated the rest of us who weren't from that background. I have no links to overseas countries or clubs. Central Coast Mariners is my sole football passion and hearing someone who rules out a suggestion based on an allegience to an overseas club is VERY frustrating.

Now, to comment on your reply to me. Very sarcastic and ironically it is your post that is non-constructive. And while Rod Stewart may not be the best singer in the world, he is still a singer and "Sailing" is a song.

Luckily for you I deleted my instinctive response then :)

Sailing is a chant used a grounds in the HAL. Both Troll FC and Melb use it. This thread is about a unique song.

Damnit - out of the question then.

Pity, cause i was gonna say, imagine getting it to sound as good as the Urawa version (except in english of course):

OK, lets bury the hatchet :)

I like it Atomic and think it could work well. I've never heard any HAL team use it. Not saying they haven't, but if I haven't heard it, then it can't be that prolific or entrenched with them.

I agree with Perm also that if we use a song (song, chant, same thing and really doesn't matter what its called) that people already know, it will take off much better.
We have tried to get lots of songs / chants off the ground to tunes not many know or words that have to be learnt and it hasn't worked.

I dare say there aren't many songs that haven't been used already in the UK and if ex pats can't get over the various 'versions' too bad ! This is Australia and this is the A-League! Any past 'baggage' is only in THEIR heads, not in the heads of our new 'target audience', lets move on FFS!

Give this one a go I reckon.

Fine by me.

Given the average ages of bays 15 - 17, might be an idea to circulate the words (in full) or Jeff and I will be the only 2 buggers old enough to remember the song itself :)

For you yung 'uns

I am sailing, I am sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

I am flying, I am flying,
like a bird 'cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
to be with you, to be free.

Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro' the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro' the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free,
Oh Lord.

To get more crowd participation you could hand out the words to your chants to anyone going into General Admission.

What about doing a chant of the chorus from eminem's "lose yourself", it was on the radio and I thought it would look and sound great when you are all standing and pointing at the opposition in unison.

You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
the opportunity comes once in a lifetime

Just a suggestion :)

Club songs are best with long, sustained notes - nothing too quick and no gaps that require precise timing.... if you want it sung in the stadium, that is.

Because of the size of a stadium and the relatively slow speed at which sound travels, you can't expect to coordinate the whole crowd in something requiring precise timing.

For this reason, all the classic club songs are more hymn-like. YNWA is a perfect example.

Yellow, although relatively slow, has long instrumental passages between lines of singing. It could possibly be co-ordinated if played over the PA so everyone can hear it, but the gaps in the singing could sound a bit strange.
