Uncertainty about kwassie ? The thing i was certain about was if he had a shot from the 18 yard box, it was going to go flying over the bar.

If that is seriously what everyone thinks, why do we still have matt simon? Much less accurate, and is only a new club record goals tally away from having more goals than kwassie for the yellow and blue.

Yeah Jesus is right Kwasnik will be missed by this club and although he may not have been on target 100% of the time, there are some others in the squad, that consider themselves attackers, that leave a lot more to be desired in the 18 yard box than Kwassie did

Simons got potential. He will improve and I'm sure he'll put a few away this year.I can't see Kwassie getting any better.
It's strange but I can't ever recall anyone at a game saying anything good about Kwassie but now he's left his fans are coming out of the woodwork! :p
He was always known as "f**ksake Kwassie " where we sit!

KWassie is still young and has turned into a quality winger. I have long been a fan of kwassie and he will do well for wellington.

Simon on the other hand, though i started with an open mind he has shown a perchant for missing sitters. Without even a hint of the success rate of kwassie.

What about his more recent "penchant" of being top scorer of a major international competition for the Ollyroos and earning himself even Socceroo attention  :eek:verhead:

Last season Matty made huge progress, personally at first I wasn't confident he'd ever manage to stay on his feet long enough to even miss a bloody sitter  ;) but yes, he missed sitters, total of four from my memory of last seasons games. Frustrating at the time sure, but hardly a "penchant" me thinks Jesus...The one thing he has shown however is a "penchant" for improving.

I'd love the irony if at around december this year we have a "Sack Elrich/Caceras and bring back Kwasnik" thread.

It has taken great restraint not to start this thread already!

Before he even plays a game for us... Surely thats harsh even for us :p

Caceres played very consistently and was pretty much best on park for most of Melbourne's ACL games imo. It's a consistency that I think we could sorely do with and while Kwassie had some good traits, surely no one could argue that consistency was ever one of them.

It's onwards and upwards I say... so do try and have some faith "Jesus"  :piralaugh:

. i seem to recall another (soon to be ex-) mariner, slightly hunched over and a bit top heavy who also had a penchant for falling over

It's funny, but he did far better at home than away - he got the winner in Qld, but his goals at home were as often as not crucial:

PSC vs Welly
R2 vs Welly
R15 vs SFC (equalising at 4-4, should have saved a point, got sent off trying to save the point at the other end)
R20 vs Jets (equalising and getting us back in the game)
R21 vs Welly (putting another goal into our goal difference, and in the end sealing the Premiership
Semi Home Leg vs Newcastle (getting the opener to start the ball rolling).

I enjoyed all of these moments immensely, and certainly wasn't calling him "f**ksake Kwassie". I'm wondering if either of the wide players we've signed can give us anything like that sort of return...

All of those moments were brilliant, and some amazing goals they were.
I'd have no idea what I was saying at those moments, but the Welly & the Semi goals.. just wow..

There is no question Kwas will be missed, however I do feel that with Lawrie purchasing Caceres and Elrich his game time starting would have been limted and his impact would have been from the bench.

He was never gonna get a gig up front, which means he'd be cover for Caceres and Elrich, personally I think Elrich has a damn lot to live up to, 5 goals from the wing is a great return!

I can see Kwas sitting just behind Smeltz at Wellington, V2 saw a lot of abuse for him as he was being used as a target man which he certainly isn't, but just sitting off the main target man could be the right spot for him?

Good luck to him for 18 games a year

Many of you have probably seen this by now but it certainly looks to me like Lawrie wanted Kwas to be part of the team. That being the case, we need to find a good backup real quick. Although both Kwas & Matty made some monumental F**k-ups last season, both of them created some good space and created opportunities for other players. All comes down to the same discussion that I see in almost every thread - we need some creative players.

Kwasnik jumps ship

25Jun08

Adam Kwasnik has played his last game for the Mariners.

THE Central Coast Mariners had bad news on and off the field at the weekend with another defeat against arch rival Newcastle and the shock departure of a star player.

Attacking midfielder Adam Kwasnik will not play with the Mariners this season after he surprisingly signed with the Wellington Phoenix. It is a major blow for the Mariners.

Kwasnik was regarded as one of the team's most exciting players. After three seasons with the Mariners the former Blacktown player is the club's leading goalscorer after finding the back of the net 19 times in the A-League. He was a regular coming off the bench in season one before forcing his way into the starting side for the past two seasons.

"It's really disappointing and came as a real surprise," Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna said after Saturday's 1-0 trial defeat against Newcastle at Budgewoi.

"We had agreed to terms with Kwas but the contract hadn't been signed. He's obviously got this offer from New Zealand and thought it was a better way to go. It's not the best news but we have to move on."

It is believed the offer from the Phoenix was much more than that of the Mariners.

Although the Mariners have ample wide-running players, McKinna said a replacement for Kwasnik was required.

"We'll have to look for someone but there is no rush," he said.

Kwasnik's departure is the latest in a string of changes from last season's squad.

On top of John Aloisi, last week Matthew Trott and Ian McAndrew were informed their services were not needed this season. On top of that Damien Brown and Tony Vidmar retired, Tom Pondeljak signed with Melbourne and midfielder Andre Gumprecht is playing in the NSW Premier League and is still to secure an A-League contract.

Meanwhile, McKinna was happy with Saturday's performance against the Jets despite losing 1-0.

A first-half strike from Jin-Hyung Song was the difference between the teams. There was some good news for the Mariners with wingback Dean Heffernan returning from a broken leg.

Heffernan played the first half.

"We had eleven players missing and it's disappointing to lose to Newcastle again but we also did plenty of good things," McKinna said.

The Mariners hectic pre-season continues tonight against Belconnen in Canberra.

The team then backs up to tackle ACT Rockets on Friday, also in Canberra.

I think huge progress is something matty did not do last season, if anything i felt he went backwards. The top scorer in the olyroos tornament, was against young guys, and no one of the build of a-league defenders. Hell one of the teams was an u19's. His ability top fall over will be back against the bigger stronger australian defenders.
Total of 4 sitters? I remember him missing 5 in one game.

Though i see potential in the 2 new wide men, i dont think they would easily have walked past kwassie into the starting lineup. Owens certainly didnt, though, as with these 2, that was the plan.

Mariners confirm Kwasnik departure

The Central Coast Mariners today confirmed that Adam Kwasnik has been released by the club so that he can accept a substantially higher financial offer from Hyundai A-League rivals the Wellington Phoenix for the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season.

Kwasnik leaves the Mariners as the clubs greatest all-time goal scorer, having netted 19 times in all competitive fixtures over three campaigns in the Hyundai A-League, including a club Golden Boot winning seven strikes in 2006/07.

Capped 62 times in the Hyundai A-League and a further 13 times in Pre-Season Cup matches, Kwasnik leaves the Mariners as their most experienced Hyundai A-League player and as the only Mariners marksman to have netted a goal against every Hyundai A-League opponent.

"Today we regrettably bid farewell to one of our foundation players and one of our outstanding performers from seasons one, two and three in Adam Kwasnik," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"As we have always maintained, we will never stand in the way of the ambitions of any player wishing to further their careers or expand their horizons and although disappointed that we wont be seeing Adam run out in a Mariners jersey this season, we are pleased that we have been able to support him to make a decision to further his career with Wellington.

"We wish Adam all the very best with the Phoenix and thank him for his exceptional service to the Mariners during his stay on the Central Coast.

"Despite Adams exit, myself and our coaching staff remain totally convinced that our 2008/09 line up is more than capable of emulating and surpassing the feats of last season and to that end, we expect to announce some exciting new arrivals ahead of the new campaign."

With Kwasniks departure, the Mariners have now farewelled nine members of their Hyundai A-League Premiership winning line up, a list that also includes John Aloisi, Damien Brown, Alvin Ceccoli, Ian McAndrew, Damian Mori, Tom Pondeljak, Matthew Trott and Tony Vidmar.

Conversley, the Mariners have welcomed four fresh faces to their 2008/09 squad, with Adrian Caceres joining from the Melbourne Victory, youth international David DApuzzo signing his first profressional contract, Ahmad Elrich arriving from the Wellington Phoenix and Dylan Macallister jetting in from Norways FC Lyn Oslo.

The Mariners pre-season trial match program continues this week in the nations capital, starting with a fixture against powerhouse ACT Premier League side Belconnen United tonight and concluding with a match against local representative outfit the ACT Rockets on Friday, 27 June. Kick off for both matches is 7pm.

Mariners Memberships for the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season are now on sale at www.ccmariners.com.au.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Whilst I am confident we will survive post Kwassie, there is a depressing lack of quality in the current squad and if we dont sign some creativity in the middle of the park, a long, turgid season awaits.

Yep starting to worry a little bit, and a bit annoyed at the deal with the Sheffield player falling through...

This is a good move for Kwas personally, but as others have pointed out, it leaves us desperately needing a boost in MF attack.

Interesting read.

I would like to be hearing more about players who could be coming in. The silence is not good.

That said had the sheffield move gone thru no doubt weould have been stoked.

But hoping we have backups. Sounds like the club was not planning on kwassie leaving, and probably dont have a replacement in mind.
