GC game - STILL IN GOSFORD

actually, I am a bit slightly dissappointed with Ryan for goals 1 and 3.
1st goal...a bit static...but it was pretty sloppy defending
3rd goal...simply put, HE WAS beaten at his near post!
In his defence, he was caught offguard. One second you are expecting Wilko to hoof the ball long- then all of a sudden, they are having a crack at goal!

I picked a draw....just because i expected the boys to be leg weary...i didnt even think the first half would be that fast...nice surprise, pity they finish the shots...cudos to the GC keeper , man had magnets in his gloves

The first half was probably the best football I`ve seen the Mariners play.
They really controlled the play & attacked with some resemblance of intelligence which should have seen us up by at least 3 at the break.

So WTF!!happened at half time?

I fail to see how can they be fatigued? They`re still two games behind everyone else!!
FFS!! we knew the ground would be sandy (it is our home ground isn`t it.)
No excuses ..we were shit in the second half.

Wilko was probably the worst offender & why he wasn`t hooked is beyond me.Our new style has really showed the flaws in his game. His lack of mobility, his one pace & reluctance to go forward & overlap put so much pressure on Weemac.
I know he was out of position & he`s the captain but he showed no leadership at all in the second half & a game or two on he splinter might give him something to think about.
Another that I thought was disappointing was McBreen..for mine I think he`s lazy. He just doesn`t do enough to create anything.

On a brighter note, Griffith,Rose & Ryan are getting better with each game & IMO it`s time to leave Amini on for a full game.
Although Bojic isn`t my favourite player I thought we really missed him out there & he would have given us so much more out wide.

It was great to see nearly 10,000 there.Lets hope we get an even better crowd at the next home game.

MOM - 3 Dutchy
- 2 Griffith
- 1 Rose

Here's the drum - they were fatigued! Something to do with flying to NZ, playing Welly, flying from NZ to Melbourne, playing Victory on Thursday evening, flying to Sydney on Friday and playing on Sunday; you might not think that is tiring but clearly it is.
As for McBreen being lazy, give me a break, the bloke chases everything. Just because he hasn't got the engine of a Matt Simon or Pedj Bojic doesn't mean he doesn't try. And Wilko is much more mobile when at CB than RB.
Watched the first half again on recording - it looks so different; like Deej I originally thought Amini gave up the ball too often but Marinermick is correct, the kid was superb. he lost the ball just once; everything flowed through him, short or long passes were quick and accurate and what superb vision he has. Apart from the great chance he missed (looked even worse on TV) I had forgotten he has another good shot too. This kid is really special and I would not be surprised to see him open his account against Newcastle

Personally I thought Amini was well off his game today, gave the ball away too cheaply and really should have done better when 1 on 1, yes you have to get it on target to make the keeper work but he just blasted it straight at him! Not sure how you can say it was 1 of his best games Midfielder?

I can only remember him lossing the ball once, and only one pass not on target... he missed a one on one when he snapped at the ball...

When he was on the field the speed he sent passes the control he had of the ball... and the number of players he drew to him thus creating space for others etc .... his touch, the speed of his passes are better than any player I have seen at the Mariners to date ... he is a rare talent IMO... his still has a long way to go ... but at 17 and he looks like a young 17 in that he still is building strength and speed ...

Anyway when he was on the park for the first hour we were totally on top had great shape and a go to player who kept the ball or passed it... he left .. Matty was no answer and Hutch had no idea what to do in the number 10 role.

He had fallover boy marking him most of the day ... meaning I guess he has developed huge respect from other players and coaches...

He did look a bit like Danny at times. He also tends to get sucked in by the ball meaning he is very susceptable to a ball cut back sharply to any hovering strikers.

Still i loved his one handed save...that was classy.

FFS!!

. the fact that we have games in hand made the fatigue even worse - we went from playing one game in a month to four games in two weeks. those four games being in townsville, wellington, melbourne and the 'tongue ... that's not even a fun road trip if you're on holidays

. all that with (more or less) the same starting eleven for each game. if you look back to the game in melbourne (less than three days prior) you may remember the huge effort the boys put in to come back to draw ... so you still think fatigue wasn't a factor?

. the earlier than usual start and a quite warm day meant that it all became too much after about an hour. arnie used his subs early but unfortunately they didn't have the answer

. the way i saw the game swayze struggled the most which was highlighted by his cameo up front at the end ... he was lethargy personified - hope he is right for tonight. admittedly i may have been looking for that as i was concerned (older european) before the match

. yeah, yeah i know they are full-time professionals and all that ... but give the guys a break

. now for my defender a defender rant (it's been a while)

. i saw wilko making a lot of over-lapping runs particularly in the first half. but his team-mates must read this forum ... either they didn't see him (because apparently he doesn't make over-lapping runs) or they chose not to pass to him (because apparently he can't cross). but my wide angle view of the game saw him getting forward quite often - at times risking offside ... but sadly he never received the ball when it was the best option

. i think wilko cops a raw deal from a lot of peole because he goes about his business without most people realising what he has done. he is clean and effective without all the 'show' ... this somehow makes him a target/scapegoat when anything goes wrong (and yes it was a horrible mistake that led to 'that' goal)

. for example there is a bloke that sits near us in the stands that has been berating wilko for six years ... i can't remember him ever criticising another player by name but wilko cops it every game. perhaps his daughter lost her virginity to wilko just before he dumped her ... but i just don't get it. on sunday he was abusing him for not sorting out the offside trap when at that point (playing as a wingback) it could not have been his responsibility

. some people need to take their blinkers off ... rant over

Agree totally. Wilko was our best player last season and in the top three this season.

I have the honour of calling a game blow-by-blow and Wilko has saved our arse on countless occasions, especially when Dutchy drifts and loses his man which happens more than people realise.

This season under Arnie he has added an attacking dimension to his game, scoring and aiding in a few assists.

The guy is class, should be our first choice CB, but people want to slate him because he doesn't have the Pedj contribution out of position at right back.

Fatigue my arse. We completely outplay them and outrun them in the first half until GC score, then we fall apart and let in sloppy goals. Clarky has these boys whipped in to seriously good shape from what I hear, fatigue is a bullshit excuse for losing to some soft goals that should have been defended MUCH better.

Not sure what to think re: the fatigue excuse. We keep hearing people banging on about how much more football they play in Europe and how the players want more games, and we get a massive break in our season and the excuse for a loss is they are rusty... but then we play a few games and they are fatigued? Just wondering where the line is here, how often do they need to be playing to not be rusty or fatigued?

. i think one game in a month = rusty

. i also think 4 games in two weeks = fatigue

. sure they do this in europe (well some of the top teams do anyway) ... but do they go from one to another? ... and do they do it with such a small squad?

. the travel involved would also be the equivalent of playing each game in a different country (maybe continent)

. simply: the balance is wrong

. besides i always thought the argument for 'more' football was a longer season (and therefore shorter off season) not simply cramming more games into the same space of time ... where is the benefit in that?
