Fury away - 5th November

A win is a win and Townsville is a tough road trip that will only get tougher as the temperature gets warmer and humidity higher.

McGlinchey was less effective in the heat. We saw him wilt last season as the weather got hotter. Let's hope that after one and half seasons in the a-league he has adjusted. Time will tell as he has been our best player this season so far.

Great to see Arnie get on top of things tactically in the second half when Franz changed things. Bringing Hutch on for Amini was a brilliant move and gave us more steel and experience when it was needed.

Griffiths man-of-the-match for mine, followed by Doig and Bozanic.

There is a part of me that feels sorry for the Fury, must be really hard to follow them as a fan at the moment. I really hope that the FFA do keep bailing them out. As much as they can't afford to do that, they can't afford to alienate the whole of North Queensland either.

There are rumours going round Adelaide's new owners will be announced on Monday or Tuesday. If that happens then the financial pressure of the FFA eases a little and hopefully allows them to give a bit more leniency to Fury.

I actually think there is more to the story than is coming out. Fury purportedly do have investors. However, there may be some brinkmanship to try to keep the FFA in the ownership mix so that they do not have to carry the can for the club completely.

Once again the Dutchman's had an outstanding game. Great defending and scores winners as well. Can't ask for more than that. His after match words were spot on too.

Amini faded a bit after a bright start, but then so did all the team. His touch and passing were, for the most part, outstanding. A couple of times he put through some jems but the receiver was not quite up to it.

While the second half was frustrating, another good solid win to Arnie & the boys. What's more, were picking up valuable away points and have games in hand, with no sign of a mid season slump. And we're playing some of the most attractive football in our history.

Feel the pride!

Felt sorry also for Fury again. My second favourite club doing it tough. I hope they can hang in there, as better days will surely come.

Good team performance again, if Perez is fit next game I would like to see him start up front with McBreen as Matt Simon is still working hard but looking very out of sorts though.

Not sure if anyone else noticed the sweet irony but I could not help but wonder, if Perez hadnt been banned for those two matches for a one on one with the keeper.....would the ref have given that a penalty on Matty Ryan?

I would bet my house that in the back of every refs mind the instant something like this happens are the events that unfolded on that very day....

Interesting food for thought on karma, justice, things evening out overtime etc

Anyway, glad to see such a good start to the season, REALLY wish there were more people on here to discuss it with...

Are there flyers around for this website and mariners in general, what about on the notice boards of the tafes around central coast or Central Coast Campus? Would cost a few dollars and raise massive awareness of the mariners and this forum in general?

Wish i could be a part of it all again, i miss the central coast so much, for all you people that live there from someone who has lived in Melbourne, Gippsland, Sydney, Darwin and Brisbane....it is a great place, didnt realise how lucky I was til i left!

Great to see we can still grind out a win when we haven't got our first eleven on the pitch; a lot better than seasons past. Having said that, I can't help but think our inability to score more goals whilst we're dominating play is going to cost us points this season.

Sheer joy at beating the scum :)

Got to agree regarding lost chances in goal. Compared to last year, the Mariners should be brimming with confidence. They just don't seem to be able to produce the killer shots. Having said that, I can't wait to they come back to Blue Tongue.

I thought we were excellent in the first half and average in the second.

Defence was superb again.

Ryan 6.5. Lucky with the Williams foul but commands his box well for a young un.
Wilko 7. Very solid.
Dutchy 8. MOM. Great goal and top game apart from one shank of the boot in first half.
Doig 7.5. Very dependable display. Tackles cleanly.
Rose 7.5 His best game for over a month. Coming back into form.
Olly 7. Industrious but faded.
Amimi 7.5. Faded really badly but was great in first 20 mins. Shows great potential but fitness is a worry for a 17yo.
Grittiths 7. Solid but not as dominant for mine as in previous weeks.
WeeMac 7.5. Showed class again but did fade.
Simon 6.5. Improving but still off the pace.
McBreen 7. Worked hard.

Lewis was the pick of the subs.

MOM was hard to pick.

3pts Dutchy
2pts WeeMac
1pt Rose

I am a huge fan of Griffiths. Was outstanding (again) against Fury and at 22, I think is a future Footballeroo. Perfect replacement for Jedi and is similar in many ways. Physically a giant, crunching tackler, mobile, good distribution, can play the ball out and is the lynch pin from defence to attack.Very important to the way we play and very underated.

He reminds me of Grella who I thought was our best player at Germnay '06.

If he stays fit and in form, could be a bolter for the Asian Cup. He is crucial for our title hopes in the HAL. Our best performing players this season have been him, Dutchy, Wilko and Wee Mac and if they keep firing, we'll give this comp an almighty shake. We're only going to get better and we haven't seen the best of this side by a long shot.

In my opinion, Brisbane are playing the best Football we've ever seen in the HAL but I doubt they can maintain it. Adelaide have been brilliant but are starting to struggle and we've got tonnes of improvement. I believe we're an excellent bet for top two and can go all the way. It's time some on here had more confidence and start to consider the potential of our side.

Last season's Mariners would have thrown that game away. I thought we did well to hold them out and points like those will really count at the end of the season.

Big trip to Welly now!

I think the Ref got it right on the penalty claim.

Williams kicked the ball away from, not towards, the goal - before tripping over Matt's hands.

Does that make any difference under the rules? I had the understanding that something like that in the box is always a penalty.

I agree that Brisbane are playing the best football we've ever seen in the HAL but why do you doubt they can't maintain it? Personally I hope they do maintain their standards. If it means they win the comp then so be it. We'll just have to lift our game in order to compete with them... If that's the case then at the end of the day, everyone wins.

There are others on here that know the ins and outs of the rules better than me, but I'm pretty sure that was a clear penalty. I don't think it matters whether the ball was kicked away from goal; the point is that the player was controlling the ball and was taken down by the goalkeeper. Ryan didn't get his hands to the ball at all; it was all legs from what I saw.

Sorry - it was a penalty as long as the ref considered it careless, reckless or using excessive force and we dodged a bullet.

from Law 12

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following offences in a manner considered by the referee to be
careless, reckless or using excessive force:

• trips or attempts to trip an opponent

Penalty kick
A penalty kick is awarded if any of the above ten offences is committed by
a player inside his own penalty area, irrespective of the position of the ball,
provided it is in play.

I thought it was a penalty; my next door neighbour doesn't. But it is only a penalty if the referee deems an offence has been committed. The referee must have judged that Ryan got the ball or judged that he could not, without any reasonable doubt, say that Ryan got Williams. The ref has to call it as he sees it not look at Fox replays. And I maintain that if Williams had got up to take the penalty he would have blasted it over the bar like he did with every other shot he had.
