FINALS Game 2 CCM v ROAR

Dont want to be a downer after as brilliant peformance but I think the move to bring Rostyn off for Ibini was the wrong one. Up untill that point we were creating chances after it we created nothing. Should have been Ibini or Amini for Kwasnik, he was out on his feet.

. good point scottmac ... it was a gamble ... and would have been genius if we had pulled it off

. personally i would have already had little ronnie on for 15mins by that point ... i think we had started to lose the momentum and the boys were getting tired. the joy amini shows when he comes on is infectious and could have been just the tonic

. oh and huge congrats to olly for his first goal ... i had a feeling it was going to come (eventually) on a big occasion. it certainly did, but unfortunately not the end result we all wanted

Tantalising. Oh so close. A magnificent albeit flawed team performance from the mighty Mariners. Yet again, the team, written off by all the pundits, responded superbly. Inspired by the cool, calm, gifted and intelligent Matt Ryan they were utterly unafraid of Brisbane. They rode the Brisbane storm and provided one of their own. Brisbane were shaken, rattled and almost rolled as the Mariners sliced them apart as if they were Primo cooked salami. The game encapsulated the season: great attacking football and a host of chances frittered away. A game of might-have-beens and should-have-beens. Perez’ early miss seemed ominous but it didn’t matter when McBreen got a piece of luck and then Bozanic placed a beauty. 2-0 and dominating the play. The team’s collective whole was playing better than the sum of the individual parts. If only McBreen’s looping header had a couple more inches on it; if only Bozanic had hit the target instead of pulling his shot wide; and Patrick literally missing by the breadth of a hair a great chance from Griffith to kill Brisbane off. All this while Ryan was producing the sort of game that would have won him Man-of-the-match at the Alamo; plus two of the best long field stunningly accurate kicked clearances I have ever witnessed.
And then Arnie ruined it all with a truly awful substitution. Griffiths off, Bernie on. It made no sense then and it still doesn’t in the cold light of day. Once our holding midfielder, having an outstanding game, was taken off we lost our hold on midfield. Bernie was out of place and out of his depth on the right wing, he barely touched the ball. Amini should have been on, and for Kwasnik. When Amini comes on the team ups the ante and plays on the front foot; he is immediately in the game; his touch is sublime and he has touches of the ball constantly. Alarm bells ring in the opposition but not last night, I doubt the increasingly worried Ange could believe his luck. It was a substitution that jarred the senses.
Ryan should have covered his nearpost but the Olympic high diver Broich had too much time anyway with a hint of offside. The referee compounded the disappointment with a heartless sending off of Bojic with a soft second yellow. And if I see that useless Henrique stick his face in the camera again I’m going to rip his head off. But there was much to take from this game. Not the least that the team should need little motivation for next week’s game at Bluetongue as they know that a Grand Final beckons and if they make it they have the measure of Brisbane and should genuinely believe they will win the Title. We are that good, it isn’t over yet.
Mom 3 points – Matt Ryan (the truly great English goalkeeper Gordon Banks used to make a lot of mistakes as a youngster but became one of the best keepers of all time; Ryan is a future Socceroo)
2 points – the team (it would be churlish to select other individuals, the team was a truly united unit)

And boy, Club Tuggerah was a-jumping last night. And a-hootin' and a hollerin' too. Trouble was it was some country and western thingy in another room :) And when Bozanic scored the cheer (from the twelve of us) was such that you would have thought we had won the meat platter. As many good Tuggerah types seemed to last night. The plans for the Coe are very interesting too. :innocent:

. yes i think their first was offside ... but that sort of stuff happens (especially to us as it turns out)

. i didn't see a second yellow for pedj ... it seemed to be a straight red ... neither of which were deserved. is there any right to appeal? i thought with a red we may have been a chance (eg. reddy/perez) but then i was reminded that we are neither sydeny or melbourne

. and i need to get something off my chest ... although i have always thought mckay was a decent footballer - i really, really don't like him. he is a whiney, sneaky little bastard and going down injured when he was late on a tackle and winning a freekick for it just epitomises this

Mackay is just your typical vertically challenged midfielder. Always whining - don't know why the refs put up with it. He must have been a real pain in the arse when he was an ankle biter (still is an ankle biter FWIW) :innocent:

Football was the winner last night … two superbly coached teams… with both coaches trying to technically out think the other… with all players giving their all …at a very high technical standard.

The game was magnificent, tremendous, marvellous, excellent …. But most of all was a beautiful game and wonderful to watch…

In closing in the 3 All draw, Brisbane had the rub of the green, we hit the post last week three times thus giving Brisbane the luck, the goal that brought Brisbane back into the match was scored mainly because an offset player interfered with our defence…. In the grand final I hope these things even out and we get the rub of the green…

Great match, arguably one of the best the A-League has ever produced….

That was a very exciting game.

Got back from Sydney just on half time with no idea of the score.

My daughter got me excited when her friend (Olly's sister) texted her to see if she had seen his goal.

Beauty i thought we might be 1.0 up!!! You can imagine my joy when i turned on the box to see us 2 nil up.

The second half we really went for it and had we scored in first 15mins when we totally dominated then i believe we would be hosting the GF (or being f**ked over again by the dogs at the FFA).

Not long after that we started to lose momentum and you could see the roar visibly lifting and could feel we were going to conceed at any moment. Still we drove on and could and should have seeled the game several times.

Roar's first goal was offside. Rose got caught in no mans land and Ryan was (unforgivably if he wasn't 18)beaten on the near post.

Still we pressed and Dutchy went within a whisker.

That little favella dog Henrique gave the roar an undeserved draw and i was left gutted at what should have been.

Ryan. He is a real rough diamond.....but a diamond he is. Like David Calamity James, he has a couple of terrible mistakes waiting to happen BUT he is an enigma. Soooo much to like about his keeping but always worried he is going to butcher a half chance.

Back four worked so hard and played offside trap really well but were guilty of not closing down quickly enough a few times. I thought Pedj was the pick of the bunch.

Middies were superb, all of them. Griffiths was immense and should never have been subbed. Wee Mac was the stand out for mine.

Kwas and McBreen were both very good, however one of them should have come off around 65mins when wheels started to fall off. I'd have brought Amini on and pushed Perez up front.

Overall we were great and only our usual lack of a decent finish cost us dearly.

Well done to Olly for a great goal to go with the usual high quality game.

See you all at BT.

a great game credit to brisbane. Bring on gold coast if we play like that against them we should beat them easy. Just a question i shouldnt ask but im going to will the mariners or support group be organizing anything for the gf if or when we make it. Like flights or accom.

interesting to see as we were entering the ground, the roar are already taking registrations for 2011/12 memberships and get a 10% discount if you register early. good opportunity to get people who come along to the finals to sign up as members.

wonder if the mariners have ever thought of something like that?

2-2 or 2-1, really no difference and (as Arnie said in the post-match), Henrique's goal would've been unlikely if we hadn't the need to push for a 3rd. It's left the occasion of the Grand Final to mark the Roar's first loss in 28 games, we showed last night that we were well capable inflicting it. I so hope we earn that (deserved) chance.

It seems that most Roar fans can't stomach the idea of CGU even making the GF and would like to see us back - even if they are going off prematurely by singing about being 'champions' already.

Experiencing the subdued and worried mood of (the bulk of...) the crowd at HT was worth the trip, even without a great game, a fine performance by the Mariners, Ollie's first goal :eek:verhead: etc. And some decent football fans, although dressed in Orange. Less said about some others the better.

Just a question i shouldnt ask but im going to will the mariners or support group be organizing anything for the gf if or when we make it. Like flights or accom.

Can't really see that happening. It's a complicated and risky task.
Already now the accomodation options are distributed piecemeal and (especially if it went to ET +/- pens) there's no real flight options back to SYD or NTL post-game on Sunday. Webjet and Wotif FTW.

FFA must improve on the current away bay arrangements (or actually a tapering half-bay), which doesn't even go to within 10 rows of the fence. I'm sure we'd take a lot more to the GF and surely CGU (their low crowds aside) would bring even more to a derby GF. Although sadly (according to the Roar forum, where they're bleating about ticket prices), map looks the same and tickets will be on sale to the general public (Friday) prior to the opponent being known.

What a ripper of a game!!!

The Mariners were superb & played sublime football, but credit also to the Roar for their fightback.

I agree with ROY LAw`s post & I was also surprised when Griffith came off,& although I can see Arnies reasoning behind the move, I think he took the wrong player off.

Kwasnik was the weakest link & should have been replaced at half time with Bernie.Once the roar scored it should then have been Amini for McBreen.

Still as Abbott says "Shit happens".

In saying that, McBreen lifted his game this week to the point of not being a liability. Cheers for that!!! :eek:verhead:

Pedj`s send off was tragic also. I thought Breeze had no feel for the game but Green surprised me with that decision.

Thanks for the company at Club Tuggerah Roy Law....

Two games to go boy`s. We all know you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!

If that had happened, you would not have had the cross that led to McBreen's saved header.

I think Kwassie should have been replaced by Amini at about 70 mins.

I am yet to be convinced by Bernie. Very concerned about his pace and or anticipation. Time will tell.

Very true, but conversely we may have seen a decent cross that didn`t have McBreen doing his best girraffe impersonation.

Or maybe Bernie would have taken an easier option (young players do that)& played McBreen a ball to his feet so that he could have scored.

We`ll never know now!!
