FINALS - game 1 - CCM v ROAR

We had 19 shots on goal to their 8... they had four on target and scored two ... we hit the wood work 3 times and had another 2 on target...

If you ask me how to improve I would say start Berine and Matty up front .... bring on Amini earlier ... take Berine off and move Perez up front ...

Central mids both goals... Hutch lost his ball ... Griffths did not track McKay's run ...

Was a great game both sides showed plenty of skill was generally clean...

My first reaction was to just feel flat. How can we possibly beat this side? So I was questioning my hard-earned (already spent) to go to Brisbane next week and take shit from Roar fans, facing almost insurmountable task... again

I've shaken that thought off... I'm going becuase I'm A MARINERS FAN :pirashoot: :pirashoot: :pirashoot:

I though there were some great passages from us at times but the Roar's such a tidy side (although definitely not mistake-free, to a large part due to pressure from us) that mistakes go horribly punished.

But deja-vu? We've started out last 3 finals campaigns with a 2-0 loss. Got out of jail once. Kinda felt that if we're in the GF this time it'll be via the hard route - really nothings changed - but if we do get there to play them for the 3rd time in 4 weekends and that's only one we win... [/wishing]

Previews stated we'd never beaten the Roar in Gosford (too lazy to check) so our 3 previous wins against them have all been at Suncorp. May that history repeat itself too.

As it turns out - tonight's result could be just what we need.

We go into the return leg knowing

1) what we are doing won't work against Brisbane
2) we have nothing to lose
3) our finishing was not clinical - Brisbane's was
4) our creativity was down

I'd stick with the 4-4-2 - or rather a 4-4-1-1 with Perez effectively the nominal support striker behind Matty. He is one of the better finishers and it allows Musty on the field to improive our creativity.

If the tactic works we can still win this major semi. Even if we don't win the semi -but win the game it can tell us something about that combo for the weeks to come.

What we are doing will work against Brisbane we just need our chances to go in and limit our mistakes. We can do that, we win.

Disagree about Hutch being to blame for the first goal - he was given a hospital pass by that f**king useless McBreen, who then stood like a bloody great log while Brisbane took it down field and scored. He could have at least moved his fat lazy arse and tried to chase it down. It wouldn't have done any good because he's slower than a wet week, but he could at least have looked like he cared.
If GA takes this cardboard cutout of a football player to Brisbane next week, I think I'll resurrect the Arnoldout thread. Even Nik would be a better option than this useless bastard.

2-0 its only half time lets see all out attack bernie to start with matty and perez up front with the same back 4 with olly, wee mac and amini in the mids. Kwassie, hutch, griffths, and duke on the bench with hendo of course.
Why bother with Hendo? We need goals and lots of them, bring up another goal-scorer from the yoof. We've got nothing to lose, goal difference doesn't matter now, beaten by 1 or beaten by 10, no difference.
Best way to totally stuff Brisbane's game plan is to go in with 2 full backs, 3 half-backs and 5 strikers -- by the time they'd worked out what we were up to we could be 6 up. Yes, I'm joking, but only half.

Only 10k my ass there was at least 15k.

Solid first half, terrible 2nd.

Formation for the next game

Ryan (more of a sweeper than a keeper)
Dutchy
Bozanic Amini McGlinchey
Mcbreen Simon Perez Kwasnik Duke Ibini-Isei

We have got nothing to lose just go all out attack.

That just might work if we can get away with twelve on the park. Or are we just not bothering with a keeper?

Good teams know how to win even when they are under pressure and Brisbane is a good team; even so, how they escaped with a 2-0 win is baffling. Winning is a habit, so it is said, and they have the habit better than anyone in the competition. And they have something we don’t – Costa Barbarouses. He is exactly the sort of quick, skilful, intelligent player we lack as has often been said throughout the season. One mistake gave him the opportunity, he still had work to do, but he was good enough to do it. Simon, McBreen and Kwasnik aren’t quick enough or skilful enough which is not to criticise them because they all worked hard but it was the lack of quality that cost us upfront. Our midfield was superb and we defended well. Inspired by Bojic we were first to the ball, winning tackles and passing and moving well. We controlled the play at times and even occasionally dominated. Mackay may have scored a neat goal but he didn’t run the show as he has done in the pass and nor did the formidable Broich. We had the larger share of the might-have-been and the could-have-beens: if only McGlinchey’s shot had gone in off the post, not out etc etc. My only criticism of Arnie is that he should have brought Amini on earlier, the kid is too influential just wait until 15 minutes to go. There will be some very tired bodies Sunday morning but the team has to believe they can still beat Brisbane; on another day they would have.
MoM 3 points Pedj Bojic
2 points McGlinchey
1 point Perez

I can normally get within 500 of the crowd figure and was expecting it to be about 13500 so 10000 really makes me think CCM figures are dodgy. How ever they get to add all season ticket holders who don't attend (even if they say they do not)

We were (or are) just too slow at times.
As for Kwassie he has an injury so it surprises me he is being played. The best replacement striker for speed an initiative is Duke and he would suit Perez.

i cant believe the crowd figure, i bought extras at 2pm and was 9200 ish, so only 1000 bought after that or rocked up for tickets at the gate... weird

team all played well enough apart from mcbreen.

remembering back to when Arnold arrived and he spent the off/pre season working solely on defense... i think he might try a different approach next time round!

if our team finished our chances like their team, we would have have won the comp.

More like the crowds are bumped by CCM but not FFA so we aren't used to 'real' numbers.

There was more than 10k there last night. Wed sold 10k on the Friday and had least 2 or 3k show up on the day.
Let's not forget the FFA would look at us hosting a GF if we had an attendance of ~15k. This is just their way of completely shutting off that option.
That stadium was 3/4 full at least. Screwed over again.

Oh and thanks to the roar fan(s) who decided to graffiti the toilets in the Kendall bar. Twat

I couldn`t agree more!
I`ve been saying it all season & now that I`ve seen Ibini & Duke I think it`s time to let McBreen go.

Kwassie isn`t that far off either.
His lack of consistency is wearing thin.
Crowd favourite or not he has to perform or face the chop.

I do not think it is time for major changes. We made enough chances to win easily, as usual just could not finish, not only the strikers but the mids as well.

I would definitely consider changes up front.

The candidates:
Matty. Is he 100% fit? Hopefully another week will see him there, if not is he good enough at 75%? Maybe work at what is best for him to be fit for the elimination game.

McBreen. Looked good against the Gold Coast with both Amini and Perez playing. Is he just needing good service? To big and lumbering for the modern game maybe?

Kwassy. Probably should not have been used at all last night, it would not have helped his achilles problem. I suspect he has been carrying something for the last 6 weeks. Usually great positional play, good finisher and can sometimes bring out Kwasildinho. IF he is not 100% fit should not play in the hope he will be fit for the next couple of games.

Bernie. Very inexperienced. Does not appear to be a hard worker. I have not seen enough of him (like I suspect many here) to really judge.

Duke. I have sen even less of him, however Kevrenor gives him a big wrap.

What to do?

4 4 1 1 is very tempting with both Amini and Perez playing, however it is not our usual structure and may be too late in the season to start experimenting. We generally have not played well with one target man.

4 4 2 is probably still the preferred way to go. If we cannot get 2 fully fit strikers do we waste a playmaker (Amini or Perez) up front? Is it a bigger waste to leave one on the bench?
Do you play a youngster and who do you put next to him?

Who else is carrying an injury? Griff, Dutchy, Pedj? It is a worry in a team with great spirit and players that bleed yellow that many will attempt to play on with an injury. Generally all it brings is a sub par game and crucifixion on this forum.

It is vital that whoever plays is fit.

Who would be a manager?

Yeah something fishy is up with the crowd numbers.

There is no way we only had 200 more people than in the downpour last week.

I found it very hard to believe there was 10k last week, and very hard to believe there was 10k this week!

mmmm 3 up front bernie, matty, perez 3 in the mids olly, wee mac, amini and the same back 4 that equals 10 plus a goal keeper equals 11.
